Oh definitely, I use the Headspace app it’s wonderful. You pay a subscription but it’s totally worth it. There is a few freebies on there. They also have workouts on there. Enjoy!

  3. I use Insight Timer. It's a nice app that allows you to meditate on a timer in silence or with meditative music as well as check out tons of free guided meditations posted by teachers and other experts. It tracks your meditation stats and lets you know how many days you've meditated in a row, as well as total meditation time and days. It also provides some milestones to enhance your sense of accomplishment.

  4. Waking Up with Sam Harris, it's a paid subscription but if you drop them an email because you can't afford a subscription they'll give you the premium free for a year. I have no doubt in saying that for me Sam Harris is the best at getting people into meditation, there's no urgency and no pressure. I will say that you need to just introduce it into your everyday life, don't worry about the length, spend a minute 2 minutes or 10 minutes, whatever feels comfortable for you. You can't go gunho into meditation, it takes time and patience so by simply introducing it in small amounts you become more willing to do it.

Using technology as a facilitator is counter to the spirit of meditation. Meditation is the intimate experience of your own personal subjectivity. Any software that you introduce is getting in the way of what meditation is. There should be no intermediary between you and your consciousness. All of the replies about apps and programs are gimmicks to make a profit off of you. You don't need any commodities in order to meditate.

  7. I disagree. Apps can aid you without taking away from the act of meditation. Technology can enhance your meditation and even serve as a bridge to other forms of meditation. It's a great place to start, especially when you don't know how to begin. Remember, meditation is not a narrowly defined practice and it doesn't need to be entirely personal either. It encompasses a great deal of variety and can be structured in many ways - alone, in a group, with or without technology.

  8. Having guided medtations are a good way to get into the act of meditation, if you don't feel so that's fine but not everyone is Buddha the second they sit down, it takes years of meditating and true practice to reach any great meditative level, but it's all about starting. It matters not if it's a couple of minutes a day or through guides, it's all about the initial effort before being in your own place of mind.

  9. Meditation app? Jesus it seems people can't even wipe their asses without apps anymore.

Meditation is about getting away from the world, especially the attention grabbing technology we're glued to 24/7. Phone is the last thing you should have around while meditating.

Just sit down, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. You don't need an app.

This is the crux of the issue. Porn addiction has more in common with Internet Addiction than it does with Sex Addiction. The culture of this board reveals that more and more everyday. The problem is excessive, unnecessary internet usage that escalates into more extreme content and deviant behavior - secrecy, porn, lying, doublelife, etc.

Many PMO users are also addicted to the internet to varying degrees. They are willing to recognize the P-problem, because it leads to obvious manifest behavior like PIED. But the Internet-hedonism-dopamine-notification-etc. problem is more pernicious and difficult to notice.

I find it even more ironic that in a thread about sharpening awareness (i.e. meditation) we are still seeing people in denial of habitual, unnecessary reliance, fixation and attachment to technology to mediate increasingly more and more aspects of life.

  11. You're right. Many people are addicted to technology and that can lead to deviant behaviors down the line. That said, you shouldn't make that assumption about the OP or other strangers who use apps. OP is asking for an app to help him get into meditation, not for advice on battling a screen addiction.

  12. If you're using an app, it's not meditation, it's relaxation.

The goal of meditation is to bring more awareness into one's life. If you can't sit and watch your breathing without any support, it means your mind is too restless. Meditation is not about forgetting the world. It's the opposite, it's about bringing awareness into our lives.

But it is above all a state of mind. Most people meditate with an objective in mind. If you are meditating to achieve some result, it is not meditation. Meditation is saying yes to the present moment. No particular expectation, no hope, just being there. In reality, it is kindness to oneself.

    How to meditate? Very easy

    - Find a comfortable sitting position. Not lying down, otherwise it's relaxation.
    - You can close your eyes or leave them open. Personally I prefer to keep them open otherwise I fall into relaxation.
    - Watch your breathing. The air coming in and going out of your nose. the sensations it gives.

Be careful, it is not a question of concentrating on your breathing. If you know you are breathing, that is awareness. No need for more. that is enough. No need to get tense. You pay attention to your breathing just like you might do to a friend. You don't want to hurt yourself.

Don't block your thoughts. It's impossible anyway. Let them come and go. Like the clouds.

If you forget your breath, it's normal. Just be aware you lost awareness and get back to it gently

My response to that is by using an app, you aren't doing meditation anymore. And you have the downside of potentially making your Internet Addiction worse. Using a device for meditation is like using a device to pray to God.

Imagine a person asking, "I am looking for an app to help me learn how to pray. Do you have any suggestions?" You would tell that person that they are looking in the wrong direction. You don't need technology for that.

    Thank you all!
I think that I wanted to start meditate with an app, only because I have never meditate before, so I thought it would be easier to start with an app.

Now that I read all that discussion, I understand the absurd with meditate with an app. It is OK to do it, but it is not the real thing.

    Thanks a lot bros!

Just turn off the phone and use a watch, if you want to track the time. I do recommend quantififying and measuring that which you want to improve. But meditation isn't necessarily better just because you can sit still for a long time.

The benefit comes from the depth and intensity of the experience, just like it does for lifting. If you half-ass lift weights for 45-minutes and spend most of that time scrolling through playlists on your phone, then you make less progress than the dude who is singleminded and focused on each rep, contraction and pump for 15 minutes.

Meditation should be you sitting down and observing your body - the sensations, tingling, discomfort, pain, itches, etc. Just observing without judgement for what it is - just sensations. Then watching of your thoughts - memories, urges, desires, daydreams, fears, anxieties, etc. Witness the thoughts and follow them but don't pass judgement. Acknowledge them for what they are - transient, fleeting thoughts. Then
watch your emotions and do the same thing - hunger triggers certain feelings, thoughts and moods; sadness does the same; happiness does the same.

Throughout all of your meditation, be aware of the center which is unmoving. Your consciousness is witnessing everything that happens - in the form of interior and exterior perceptions as sensations, thoughts and feelings. Notice that peace that comes from consciousness noticing itself. No matter what thoughts, emotions or perceptions you have, your consciousness is untouched. You are pure knowing-ness at the absolute center of your being.

This is what meditation entails. It has nothing to do with time, technology or apps. It is a deep discipline to understand reality and our own subjectivity.

  17. Hey,
I have been into the meditation scene for nearly for three years. And seeing upon this great discussion i would like to add some opinion from my side
    Foremostly,
It is not necessary to have a app for meditation
-> But, if you want to go deep into meditation, i prefer to take learning from some Youtube channel or some apps
When, i started this journey i would say the most basic and one of the powerful is just to sit and think nothing but your manifestation (though due to fapping, i lost the very vital fluids for manifestation hence, could not achieve one ) but while doing this i felt alive like truly i'm living that moment.
Or the other thing what you can go for is first learn a meditation
-> If i want to learn third eye chakra meditation.
Firstly, learn from the internet how to do them etc..
Then in the same way do it yourself without the indulgence of technology.
The thing that i would gaurantee you is you will feel better without techno. Also, bringing about a downsider, technology would give you the background music to bring you in flow .

MY basic advice for you could be that just start from one channel (if from YT)like master shri aksharna I personally follow him(and it is not a paid promotion :) ) or from one app.
Because sometimes some master(s) have different methods and some can even be contradictory.
    P.s - First of all,
Please start with the simpler ones cause if you directly start from the advance ones. Your body or soul may or may not accept it .
    Hope it helps.
    Sorry for bad English
