I’m not referring to the NoFap reddit, but I’ve never really been a “redditor”. I read articles especially about video game tips, and cheezburger .com drops Fail Blog stories they copypaste into my Google news feed, but I’ve never really used it. Questions:

    1) Is it sort of, kind of setup conceptually like fandom.com might be (not the wiki part, but that essentially you can find topics to discuss about anything, and each one is a self contained module?

    2) It has a “Linux style” structure, right? Every community is /r/, every user falls under /u/, etc., correct?

    3) Back in the day before Tumblr had their great purge, I know it was a frequent temptation for P. I understand that Reddit has clear P communities, yes? Is it as easy to get lost in as Tumblr was?

    4) What is Reddit’s real purpose? How is it different from things like forums or wikis?

I appreciate any advice one may give.

Stay P free, my friends. One day at a time.

Reddit has the designation of NSFW (Not safe for work/wife) which is mostly P related, any content which is P should fall under that category and not be visible (blurred out). I do feel it's possible to become a temptation for P but up to a certain degree, as long as you never click on any NSFW content or subs you should be fine. But if you ever do it can become like tumblr!

Reddit's difference I think from the forums, is that in general it's faster paced if that makes any sense, you post some picture, link or text, and people just make quick random comments or fight about it and that's it, some posts might get thousands and thousands of comments most of them meaningless gibberish. In forums it can never grow that big but I feel that you do sometimes get a deeper more personal discussion.

Personally I stay away from Reddit unless there is a specific community that I am interested in that only exists there, for example such as having a pet Iguana and finding a sub on Reddit that is all about people who take care of such creatures is one.

Reddit started out as what can roughly be described as an image board for techies, but currently after Reddit has become immensely popular and an establishment platform (Like Facebook and Youtube) the current real purpose of Reddit is control of the narrative/distraction of the masses but that's another topic.

  3. SoaringEagle sums it up well.

I used to like reddit but it has become a bit of a cesspool now with lots of censorship and propaganda. I only go there for a couple of niche subs. It's bests days are in the past and it is in major decline.

I personally stopped using Reddit after discovering the NSFW part of it. Reddit is full of accessible porn, and after I discovered this clean forum, I blocked it for good. I miss that NoFap sub, full of people and upvotes, but I can live without it.

  6. Reddit's claim to fame is the voting. If people like a post they upvote it which makes the post rise in rankings and more people see it and upvote and so on. The poster gains karma based on the upvotes their post received.

That motivates users to try hard to come up with good content sometimes but often the karma farmers merely repost old stuff, post silly memes, low effort stuff which grabs attention.

Quality varies wildly from subreddit to subreddit. r/nofap unfortunately is pretty shit.

Your paragraph on Karma is very helpful, thank you.

  8. I've never found anything NSFW on reddit, because I haven't looked for it.

I wanted to thank everyone who provided inputs. Now that I understand it, I’m able to search for some useful topics, like my smart home protocols for my house.

  10. Yeah reddit is insanely useful for answering questions/learning new things.
