I am beginning my journey to become porn free. I used to be porn free for about 2 years, then I had a relapse and have been using on and off for about six months. I am set to return to being porn free for good.

One question I had about rebooting is whether I should right away abstain from PMO and fight through the urges, or if I can MO when I have urges, making sure that I have no thoughts of porn and only of the sexual experiences I have had in the past.

I am interested to hear what you all have to say about this. I think the good in me knows I need to abstain from PMO.

  2. It doesn't make sense to ease into it. You want this change to happen now? Then start now. That's the way I see it. Try both and see which gets you better results - not everyone is the same.

  3. There's only one valid reason to ease up instead of quitting cold turkey--and that is if your addiction was so heavy and your withdrawal symptoms so serious as could endanger your health. This usually would only be of concern to people who are older and may have heart problems already. At your age, cold turkey would be best. In fact, allowing yourself to yield in even one instance weakens your willpower and may cause you to doubt your own resolve. Just remember this--one does not quit the physical addiction via the physical body: it must begin in the mind. Do not allow your mind to linger upon forbidden themes. At the very first thought of temptation, dismiss the thought posthaste. If you do not so much as think about it, you will find it quite difficult to actually do it.

Thank you for this good advice. I was feeling some urges when I wrote this post this morning, but I was able to overcome them. I definitely have no health concerns and my addiction is not that heavy, so cold turkey and a full PMO reboot is definitely to come. I know I must keep my mind and my thoughts in order for this to happen. I have recently been educating myself on the benefits of NoFap and semen retention and I am excited for what is to come. We all got this!

Not even sure why you asking, I think you already know the answer. Maybe the more important question you should be asking is why do you feel the need to ask.

When people think of a cold turkey approach, they usually think of using sheer willpower to overcome it. I think the stress that comes with quitting cold turkey is based on a fear of running out of willpower, which actually does happen, and it happens often. Sitting there waiting for the urge to go away never helps. Instead, take an approach that helps decrease the willpower required to resist PMO.

I recommend doing some physical activity when you have an urge. If you can do something at the same time that occupies your mind, that's all the better.

Never make an excuse to PMO, but when it does happen, don't beat yourself up about it. Make a note of what went wrong, and plan what you're going to do to address the problem.

Good luck! I'll see you in the success stories forum later :)

To add my own thoughts to the matter, you have to simultaneously commit to going cold turkey, while accepting the fact that going cold turkey doesn't work for most people. The fact is, you'll likely relapse. DO NOT make that an excuse to relapse. Until you relapse you must be fully committed. Have a take no prisoners mentality. However, if you do end up relapsing, understand that this is part of the process. Don't add more anxiety and self-hatred onto what you're already experiencing by judging yourself. That will only make it more difficult to abstain in the future.

Addiction is less about any given substance or behaviour, and more about the attempt to escape from negative emotion. To heal from addiction, you must heal the negative emotion that you've been carrying around. This is why simple abstinence isn't beneficial long-term. Even if you do end up getting over your addiction to PMO, you'll likely replace it with some other addiction. Maybe that's video games or food, or maybe that's even something healthy like working out. This again is where the behaviour itself is not the issue, it is instead the reason why we're using the behaviour.

People who develop bigorexia and use steroids are acting in, "addictive ways," even though they engaging in a, "healthy," behaviour. You must put in the work to release your negative emotion or, "trauma," and build up the skills and habits that lead to a better way of thinking and living.
