What is the point of the next gen consoles?

I suppose this is the sequel to a thread I made back in the Summer about the PS5. Now we are closer to the next gen consoles launching, and have definite prices and release dates for PS5 and Xbox, I am seeing hype go through the roof and I just dont understand it. Both consoles have almost no games to make them stand out from their immediate predecessors, and in fact many games that are being touted as system sellers for their respective platforms are coming to PS4/Xbox One, making it almost pointless to buy a new console to play those games unless you have a fetish for wasting money. I suppose PS5 fares slightly better than Xbox in this regard because it does have at least some exclusive games, but the fact the main exclusive launch title is a remake of a niche PS3 game is quite damming to me. PS5 games will cost $10/£10 more, neither console has nearly enough storage space to store many games at once, which will mean shelling out for potentially expensive external storage solutions, and both consoles are very expensive, more expensive than PS4/Xbone at launch. All these things are further nails in the coffin for these systems, at least for the first year or so. I just do not see the logic in buying either of these glorified doorstops beyond simply being suckered in by cheap marketing hype.

Agree? Disagree? I would love to hear your thoughts.

  2. The point is ....money.

  3. Well they will be the standard for the next couple years so more exclusive games are sure to come.

Besides it's not like there are no improvements - e.g. PS getting an SSD will be a game changer (pardon the pun).

When it comes to consoles in general I don't think they are particularly expensive when the prices are the same or lower than that of a PC with a comparable performance or an iPhone.

Also development for a unified platform is much less of a hassle than having to deal with all kinds of different hardware so theoretically you should be getting better games.

I mean yeah, I just mean from the perspective of a consumer, I dont see the point in buying one. They seem like even more of a waste than consoles usually are at launch, and thats saying something.

I'm going to laugh so hard if/when it turns out Sony are lying again and Demons Souls remake is coming to PC after all.

Since I made this thread, Xbox have bought Zenimax. That definitely is a game changer. I am lot more interested in Xbox than I was before.

    Agreed, diminishing returns all round.

  8. Lmao. That might make Microsoft the biggest videogame company.

  9. I hope they get bitchslapped by antitrust again.

I dont think so. Unless they tried to buy another console manufacturer I dont think monopoly laws apply.

  14. Whats the point of gaming? Better go out in woods.

  15. "What's a video game? The only time I look at a screen is to watch porn, bro!"

Wow congrats, it must be great being you.

  16. :D I just commented it to piss someone off. Success, I guess.
By the way, I never said something about watching porn like you "quoted" "me" but okay. Besides porn I also love watching roblox sex videos and I also have this fetish of watching armenians making random foods so it's not like I'm that boring :D

  17. Despite this being a troll comment, I constantly hear people criticise gaming as a hobby and I genuinely wonder why. So many people on this forum announce their decision to quit gaming because 'it's a waste of time' (quitting because of addiction is different of course). But what's the point of collecting stamps? What's the point of gardening? What's the point of drawing/painting or playing an instrument? How is gaming any different? I just don't understand the logic.

  18. I'm mocking you. How would you know if I was pissed off?

  19. I guess it depends on how much you do it, and what the rewards look like, which is very hard to measure across a group of people. For example, a lot of my "healthier" hobbies are a result of playing games like an autistic degenerate for so long. But some people don't let gaming affect their life in positive ways - they just rot.

For example - playing an instument has a different set of rewards than gaming. You might be able to make other people happy by playing music, and not just yourself. It's not that gaming can't do that, but I would say the set of rewards is much more limited.
