Failing to workout because of lack of motivation

    I'm an avid weightlifter, and I generally force myself to workout 3-4 1.5 hour sessions a week. However, sometimes I go to the gym, and sit there and lose all motivation to do anything, and just leave. Heck, for all I know I could be dead within the next week, why bother with all that straining and sweat. Maybe I won't be dead, maybe I'll live the next 50-70 years, so what, I'll die then anyway. Is it really worth it? What makes life not worth splurging? Motivation please, if there's any available.

    Think how awesome you thought weight lifting was when you were making it a habit, to get that enthusiasm back and acknowledge how far you’ve come.

    Also, perhaps it’s time to diversify your working out regime and do calesthetics for a period of time or explore other exercises or martial arts.

    Motivation?
    • Big as cheeseburger with bacon, steak fries and a cold beer
    • Watching a sunset
    • Walking through the woods as the leaves are changing
    • Bonfires
    • A woman’s smile when she’s laughing
    • The satisfying feeling after a hard workout
    • Realizing you are your own man, not controlled by porn
    • The chance to push yourself each day at work, school or in your personal pursuit
    • The fact that you’re not currently dying, that you CAN go to the gym
    • Knocking boots
    • Great conversations
     
  5. Yeah, it’s all about “variety” right now in the fitness community; they say it’s the spice of life. When I was overweight, I did a couple months of Bootcamp workouts. It was a real ball-buster of a workout.

    I guess my mentality is that the first half of your life is essentially setting up what the second half of your life will look like. If I remarry, do I want to have the energy to have more kids? Or do I want to hear words like “diabetic” and “high blood pressure” thrown around at the doctor’s office, and subsequently burden the taxpayer with a negligent, unhealthy lifestyle? And have discussions about taking medication that will help with high blood pressure.

    There are dozens of ways to nourish and care for your body besides weight training. Maybe switch it up for a month or two?

  8. Motivation comes after you force yourself with discipline to workout and see the result of your hard work.

    I have gained weight and lost all of my muscle mass during lockdown, i started to hit the gym again. I dont want that shit i'd rather stay home. But i rather choose a suffering by discipline than suffering by regret

    That's a very nihilistic approach to life. If you look at everything that way, then nothing makes any sense. You need to shift your perspective. Here's the deal - the baseline of life is suffering. You literally don't need to do anything to suffer, just lie down, neglect all your duties, don't go to your job. You need to constantly work in order to become happy, and that is exactly what gives life meaning. Treat the gym as something that improves you, as a source of joy.

    But ironically, I don't think that's the problem you are not motivated to train. Most probably it's because you have been following a training program for a long time, try switching things up. If you make training fun, then the question of why you need to train itself goes away. Good luck!

    Want motivation? Maybe that'll motivate you. I'm a 19years old on process to get as high as I can in the military. In my past years I could barely train right because of my damn shoulder (rotator cuff injury). Pull up was like a dream, when I got back to do only a couple banded pull ups I was so hyped. After a year of physical therapy I could go back to do push ups/play basketball with no pain. Still cannot do pull ups or lift weights and the will power and the motivation I have to just even being able to do these things is so high. But the difference between me and you, that you can lift so much weight, and get the pump while I'm out there working my ass out with physical therapy and self massage twice a day while people be judging me at the military preparation that I can't do some of the things, and I couldn't play with my friends basketball when they invited me which left me alone to be mad about the situation. Hope thatll motivate you. My case looks good compared to people with much much worse injuries, or people that are disabled which will make me look like a crying degenerate because of bragging about this. But I wrote this to motivate you, this is the current "mission" no matter how it's done :) always remember that there is people out there that can't even train at all. Live the moment.
     
  11. Make it more fun, weights are boring. If you can't do 1.5 hours 3-4 times a week, but you love weights, then I'd lower the volume. Personally, I never get bored with bodyweight training, as there are always cool new skills to learn. It's incredibly motivating when you can finally do a one arm pull-up or hold a steady handstand. Also, martial arts are good for this same reason. They give you a very good reason to train, and they can make you stronger independent of additional training.

    For example, I quit strength training at the start of COVID, but kept training capoeira (ever play WoW? It's the troll dance emote). Some of my strength skills actually improved. I couldn't do an L-sit before but now I can.
