I miss the old America

Discussion in 'Off-topic Discussion' started by Deleted Account, Oct 14, 2020.

  1. I sometimes wish I grew up in the 50s or the 80s but that will never happen so we must save the America we’re in now

    I'm not even from the US, but my time would have been definitely the 50s and 60s in America. The best music, the best movies and the best cars.
    In most middle-European countries you can work hard as hell and are a little bit above average and you can be lazy and are just a little bit below the average because the countries are way too social.
    I feel like in America everybody gets what he deserves and I love that.

  5. The 1950s had beatniks, and the 1960s had hippies. The cultural shock caused by WW2, by Auschwitz and Hiroshima led to "reverse fascism syndrome". All countercultural movements were based on the premise that mainstream pre-war culture was the cause of fascism, so it must be deconstructed. Pop-culture of course forgot all of that, nowadays even boomers are seen as conservatives despise the fact they invented all the Leftist memes millennials see as their own.

    Fascists preached war, beatniks and hippies were pacifists.
    Fascists believed in the master Aryan race, beatniks and hippies idealized primitive societies.
    Fascists were collectivists, beatniks and hippies were radical individualists.
    Fascists believed the weak deserve to die, beatniks and hippies preached care.

    The point is balance. Just like the fascists went to far in the "tough" direction, the counterculture went to far in the "soft" direction, just like millennial online culture goes today.

    Yes. We're getting mommies raising their kids in sex-positive households (can't get that off my mind once I read this in a thread here) just because they want to feel so modern and enlightened as opposed to their silly Christian neighbours who are probably also fascists and hate people of colour for their colour.

    I'm not american, but I feel like it's very common to hear the elders say that it used to be better around here back in the days. It feels to me like they miss being young. I miss old days too sometimes, but I remind myself that it was the past and I'm in the present now, so I shall try to make my present a good time.

    Yeah, I grew up in the 70s/80s; I'm glad I wasn't born later, especially in this computer/internet age.

    The 80s was a great time to grow up in America. So much adventure and freedom. It was the last time that I felt truly happy. But I guess today’s youth will be saying the same thing about this decade 30 years from now. All I know is that things were so much simpler back then. All I needed was my bike, a fishing pole, and a pack of bazooka bubble gum.

  15. Don’t get me started on music. There’s some good music now, but you have to find it on the internet. Pop music these days is basically trap music with sex, money, and drugs...

  16. People always idealize the time of their childhood. Boomers gave us the idyllic image of the 1950s... never mind beatniks, the invention of the bikini or even the threat of nuclear apocalypse. Now millennials say the same about the 1990s.... never mind the Columbine shooting and nihilistic gangsta crappers.

    Objectively, I think the late 19th and early 20th century were the height of Western culture, art and philosophy.

  17. I miss when I was the Arch Mage in Skyrim. Those were the best days.

  18. This thread has some pretty interesting points.

    I agree with this. I think the best thing to do is try to deal with our current time wisely instead of dreaming of the past.

    Nevertheless, I know in the 80s people were astonished by the merciless political campaign moves of Lee Atwater. Now, the entire presidential race is based on exposing the flaws of the rival in a competition not to find who is more qualified, but who is the bigger moron so we can vote for the other. Every other day there is an embarrassing scandal and the news channels are going berserk.

    I think we're on the edge of twist on the Overton window right now, in 20 years the world would have radically changed from what it is today and will have began to stabilize. That's because the era of "information" has destabilized completely the way we used to do stuff, and we are just now adjusting to it.

    I don't know where we are headed, but I would guess one of some possible scenarios:
    • We will realize that democracy has failed, and governments will start to shift back to monarchy, socialism or fascism;
    • Democracy will still be used by the men behind the curtains as a tool that keep the masses enslaved whilst clueless about their powerlessness;
    • Third World war will make the few who are left have to rebuild civilization from scratch.
    The last scenario is actually something that I think that will definitively happen: in 59 A.D. Nero killed his mother, and in 64 A.D. he set Rome on fire. It's just a matter of time before we have a Nero-emperor-of-Rome situation again, but this time we've got more than fire, we've got atomic bombs, hydrogen bombs, and also the bombs we don't know they exist, even though they are more powerful than those aforementioned .

    Hence, yes, I think the 80s were a wonderful time to be alive.

    Ancient Greece was fun to live in too...

    I for one don't mind the digital age at all. Cashless transactions speed up check-out time about 10x, you can order and pay for pizza in 30 seconds without having to call anyone, and you can make your car honk using your phone (to spook your friends). You can also call anyone you want from the other hemisphere for free with good voice and video quality.

    If you stay away from Shitbook, Dumbstagram, PMO and TV, the digital age is great! If you don't - well, that's your choice.
