How to avoid urges?

Discussion in 'Rebooting - Porn Addiction Recovery' started by Deleted Account, Oct 18, 2020.

  1. I am on my second day and I feel strong urges to masturbate. How long will these urges last for and how can I avoid them?

First week is tough just try to keep yourself busy, if you're at home go for a walk or speak to your housemates/ family worst thing you can do is stay in your room (or wherever you usually PMO with your laptop and phone)

Try to find a hobby gym, cycling, writing anything and it'll become easier to resist urges the longer you go without giving in.

  3. I see, I'm mostly on my laptop doing work but I've installed a porn blocker.
I've also been trying to get into shape so hopefully this will work out.

Do whatever gets you away from the computer. For me, if I start to feel urges in my room, say while playing video games or something, I turn everything off and do something else for a while. For you it may be different but here are a few ways to stop urges:

    - Cold showers
    - Peeing
    - Going outside to bike, run, walk, etc.
    - Checking the NoFap website (this is usually risky at least for me because I feel like the more you spend on your computer/phone the harder it will be)
    - Working on a hobby

These are just a few ways to help stop urges!

  5. Thanks! I definitely think the last one might be a good one and I have a porn blocker on my devices.

  6. Going grocery shopping,
    doing chores around the house,
    going for a walk,
    going to the gym
    going for a run,
getting a cold shower (very effective for me),
    meditating,
    meeting friends,
    doing school work,
going to parties (don't drink excessively and just socialize around a bit),
picking up a new hobbie like brasilian jiujitsu,
as were at jiujitsu: listening to the joe rogan podcast,
    journaling,
    etc.

And avoid using social media and avoid using your phone in general while lying in bed.

  7. Internet bad. Silence and listening to your own thoughts - good. You need to power through the difficult days and eventually you will have some peace.

I repeat to myself the affirmations "I am more powerful than my urges" and "I will never watch porn again". I pretend fully that they're true, with every bit of intention I can muster. Usually the urge subsides after a few repitions. Then I feel like having a cigarette, and have to repeat the first one again.
