I started this off as a seven day challenge, now I'm extending it another fourteen days.

    ---

I noticed I can get easily distracted when I fire up the internet browser and can easily turn fifteen minutes into two hours.

Back in March I stopped porn and about a month or so ago I uninstalled a video game I had begun playing way too much. Now the next step is to deal with things like Facebook, forums, YouTube and watching anime online. The question remains as to how much these things can remain in my life. My goal is to limit my internet usage to online banking, work, practical things like looking up directions, the odd Facebook messenger conversation and this thread. The rest is out, including the rest of the NoFap forum (I'll pin this thread to my start page to assist in this).

Time to see what else I can do with my life.

Edit: To resist temptation I switched my home and new tabs to blank pages.

Not 24 hours yet so I'll formally start tomorrow. :) Thus far I've kept within my boundaries. Deposited a cheque and paid some bills this morning.

Adding to my green list is Zoom recovery fellowship meetings. How could I have forgotten those important meetings. Perhaps they have not been as important to me as I'd like to make my self believe? Off to a good start though. After this seven days I may roll into a fourteen day challenge.

Good so far. There's some anime, an anime reaction and some music on YouTube that is calling me. I can't manage their consumption currently so a break is needed. Over the course of my challenge(s) I'll decide what will stay and what will go. It's all too easy to just start binging. Another thing to watch out for is firing up the TV. I can see it taking the addiction spot if I'm not careful.

This thread is quite boring and that is a good thing.

One week of no Facebook, YouTube, anime and forum surfing down.

I believe the biggest benefit was staying away from the comment sections. Much of the time I'll just scroll down to see who speaks good of something I like or see if there's any hype there to join in to. On the weekend I watched some movies on TV and it was a nice change. While there were commercials there was the absence of anyone saying how I should or should not have enjoyed the movie (except for any memories in my head I had collected over the years. One movie I didn't get to see the ending since I was watching it at moms and had to leave to get ready for a date. That's OK though, if life we don't always get to see things to their conclusion.

Now I must decide what to let back in. I'm a little afraid to open the doors once again.

Interesting experiment I’ve been off social media for two months now, recently got reddit though. I’m interested in seeing what you decide to keep and let go off.

Thank you for your comment. It actually helped me decide to carry this on for another fourteen days. To make more positive changes I believe I need to treat this like a pornography reboot. I have long entrenched habits built from when I began surfing internet forums twenty years ago (when I was 18).

There are a couple groups on this forum I'll add to the whitelist. The rest of the forum I'll have to avoid as I believe it's actually a hindrance at this point. Browsing it is too much like browsing the rest of the internet. I came on the internet because I was too afraid to face people face to face. In the past it was a positive experience as I learned much through it and they helped me move toward being more comfortable with face to face interaction. After a period of sobriety or recovery I honestly recommend evaluating whether or not the forum, outside of personal threads such as this or a journal, is beneficial. I believe local support groups should be a target for people who have gotten lost in the internet. Covid does make that more difficult, though not impossible. I have a local SA group I interact with via Zoom and phone. If need be I can meet face to face.

    Good morning.

I briefly checked YouTube on my phone last night to scratch the notification itch. There were no likes and no comments which made me a little disappointed. That's OK though, I don't need them. It's some good humility and that desire is now out of my system.

Good morning. The big question. If I don't go back to that stuff, what do I replace it with?

    Welcome aboard sir!

    3/14

I didn't even bother checking in yesterday. There's notifications waiting for me on YT and FB but I'm going to wait to check them. Don't need the temptations to go down the rabbit holes. Due to this challenge I'm definitely watching more TV. It's like a whole different world. The advertisements are of a completely different flavour. Typically I watch life TV so I can't skip past them. I can say there's an "internet-ness" that's missing on television. Probably the biggest takeaway is that I've gone back into a world I largely left behind. One without easy access to live comments. It is a nice change, though I want to be cautious. Right now it's very easy to walk into all the old Sci-Fi shows I was into during my childhood and early twenties on CTV Sci-Fi. One series, marathoned each day. The streaming binge model is there. Having no user feedback does make it easier to resist.

My girlfriend gave me the book "Relationships: The Key to Love, Sex, and Everything Else" by Dean Sherman. It's written from a Christian perspective and is giving me much to think about. One thing I can see is I never properly learned how to form relationships, whether it leads to sex or not.
