I put my laptop into lockdown and I am distancing and protecting myself from mental infections

Two approaches I am using right now.

Both physical lockdown of the laptop and even when the lockdown period is over for the laptop, in a sense I have software lockdown continuing i.e. the porn blocker is the software lockdown :)

I have purchased a timed lockbox. I can put the duration and while it is locked there is no way for me to relapse. Because I might need access to the internet I have been hesitant to put something very long so I've usually put 2 weeks, since I might need the internet for work related stuff, for shopping from Amazon, or using internet banking etc.

With the timed lockbox I have been able to go upto 4 weeks 3 days so far.

Problem is once the timed lockbox unlock, its very difficult and I relapse.

So I am thinking to put a much longer period now. I feel the more the time passes, the easier it will get to not want to PMO.

On the positive side, I have recently had much longer streaks, only replasing for a single day since I immediately lock it back into the lockbox.

My second approach is using a porn blocker.

I actually setup such a good porn blocker, that is is impossible for me to get pass it without entering the password.

What I did was create a password with complicated characters so it is impossible to remember and than wrote it down into my smart phone. I lock my smart phone into the lockbox, so I don't have access to it to get the password. But during the unlocked phase when I am using my laptop I end up having to disable my porn blocker, because I sometimes need search engines for non-porn related stuff. While it is down I am under danger of relapse and unfortunately this is when the relapse happened. If I didn't need to disable it in order to use a search engine, I could immediately lock my smart phone(which contains the password) away and there would be no danger. Annoyingly there isn't a single safe search engine that isn't based on the google search engine. My porn blocker is blocking google, and I need to continue blocking google, because google search is not safe. Does anyone know?

So the porn filter is useful however I know I can always format my laptop which is why I want to lock the whole laptop battery charger/power adaptor away so I can not even use the laptop.

I am thinking once I make considerable streak perhaps 90 days, than I will just lock my smartphone away which contains the password, that way I will still have protection.

After 90 days, the porn filter might be enough to stop me since it is a considerable fuss to want to format the laptop.

If I feel like I need more time, to help increase my streak without any danger, I will just lock it even further. Locking it away for a year if need be.

So if you can provide me an adult content free, safe search engine WHICH WILL BE UNAFFECTED BY MY PORN BLOCKER since I am blocking google that will be great. Than my system will be perfect.

    Cheers.

  2. I was like you once, trying to block porn completely. I've used many search engines and... invariably or otherwise, they all show porn at some point. Heck, I know of two that will override your phone's blockers. No matter what, if you want to see porn, you're going to see it unless you decide to give up Internet use entirely or if you learn how to block IP addresses, if memory serves. You should also know that blockers can get confused as to what qualifies as "adult content". For example, my blocker blocks the search "teen titans" on Google despite that franchise being kid friendly. It can get annoying if this happens often.

It's what happens here you need to address. The battle is fighting the want to see porn. Not necessarily porn itself.

I use duckduckgo and it has a safe search option. In addition to that, you can use a DNS address provider that can block porn, for example AdGuard DNS. Also, always use an adblocker, uBlock Origin is the best option. You can setup your own porn filter in uBlock Origin or find one online.

Thanks for the advice. I shall try duckduckgo.com hopefully it doesn't get blocked by my porn filter. If it doesn't use the Google search engine it should work.

I can not put anything on the router level since I live in a shared house.

    Actually just tried duckduckgo.com

I can't have this since it returns porn results. It is not safe.

You don't have to do anything with the router, you can change the DNS address in your internet card's settings.

Did you set the safe search to "strict"?

I do not think that putting it to strict makes that search engine safe. Because during a difficult time I can easily disable strict mode.

I currently have porn filter so don't really need another porn blocker. I just need to whitelist one safe search engine since all the other search engines are blocked.

But it has to be a search engine website that doesn't allow porn results at all. Otherwise, what is the point.

    I've just been trying ask.com

I think it might be the safest one to whitelist.

I found a family-friendly porn-free search engine. It's called Swisscows. It is located at https://swisscows.com/. It doesn't allow you to search for porn at all. I hope it works for me. It does not use the Google Search Engine. I'm going to see if I can add that to my browser myself and play with it.

  11. But you're not exactly exercising your willpower when you use blockers and shit. It's why I never use blockers or quit social media, etc.

That's kinda the point of a blocker though. People usually use blockers, because they realize they can't quite make it with willpower alone. They need an aid, especially in the beginning. Staying clean with a little help from a blocker is much better than constantly relapsing after only a few days without one. Also, there are other - much safer - ways to exercise your willpower if that's the goal.

If you are looking for a porn free search engine then, I will tell you that you won't find it, even if you do it won't be the best.
In that case what you can do is, to enable google safe search in locked mode.

I have provided the necessary links down below.

    ENFORCE SAFE SEARCH:

To enforce safesearch: (Works on all devices)
    https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/510?co=GENIE.Platform=iOS&hl=en&oco=0

    To lock safesearch (recommended):
    https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/186669?hl=en#:~:text=To confirm SafeSearch is on,%\system32\drivers\etc .

Safe search makes sure there will be no porn or sexually arousing content in your searches.

After doing the above I recommend you to block any other search engines that you use, such as Bing or duckduckgo, with your site blocker.

I am not saying that this will block every single search results(images, videos, links etc.), but it will surely get rid of the popular ones.

    I hope this helps.

What you are saying is absolutely true but, what I believe is that, one needs some aid before one gets ready to face the world without the blockers. What you are saying is like, telling a person suffering from paraplegia to go walking without a stick/some tool.

Thanks for all the response guys. Much appreciated. I found ask.com and swisscows.com( thanks FoundTheFreedom) to be quite good. I tested some search terms and I did come across some softcore or porn substitutes though with swisscows. Ask.com doesn't even have a functionality to search for images which is good. They only have a video search functionality which pulls in some content from YouTube. YouTube is blocked so won't load YouTube links anyway. Also, Ask.com is very good, I really recommend it.

I understand the concern of being dependent. However, I do feel like locking my laptop away for a long time and also using porn blockers is very useful. It might even be that I keep the porn blocker on forever if necessary. But for that I need to whitelist many URLs. Which is why I wanted a good search engine to be whitelisted. Eventually I think when the streak is so long, it will become easier to withstand temptation without it. When we just starting out after a relapse, as many of you will notice, it so easy to relapse again within days very easily. But when the streak starts to build up, clarity emerges.

I am having a weird problem with Bing.com and Yahoo. Even though I blocked these with my porn blocker, for some reason the bing and yahoo pages are still loading when they shouldn't. Most of the time the blocker does block Bing.com and Yahoo but not everytime. Perhaps it will be more effective if I block them with IP address. Does anybody know the IP addresses for Bing and Yahoo?

I use the hosts file to block sites.

Try blocking bing and yahoo on your PC this way:
    1. In Windows, click the Windows key and type Notepad.
    2. Right click on Notepad and choose Run as Administrator.
    3. Click Yes when Windows asks if you want this program to make changes.
    4. In Notepad, open your hosts file. In most Windows installations, this is located at: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
    5. Type 127.0.0.1 bing.com
    6. Type 127.0.0.1 yahoo.com
    7. Save the hosts file.
In general '127.0.0.1 <websitename.com>' can be used in the hosts file to block any sites for your PC.

Try this blocker if yours isn't working fine:

OpenDNS: (A little complicated but, works on all devices, blocks perfectly)
Try blocking every porn site including twitter ( It is no less than a porn site), stock photo sharing sites, instagram etc.

    Open DNS:
    Step 1:https://www.opendns.com/setupguide/
    Step 2:https://login.opendns.com/
(Manage which site you want to block)
Step 3: https://www.dnsomatic.com/ (Automatic DNS updater) Other options:

Thanks CArT_Vader for your suggestion. However, anything I put into the hostfile can be undone and that is no good. I was hoping to put something like 204.79.197.200 and 212.82.100.137 into a porn blocker.

But I believe they have a range of IP addresses. I need to block the bing and yahoo ip addresses specifically.

I troubleshooted my porn filter with the vendor and haven't been able to use Bing or Yahoo search since which is good. So my laptop is completely safe at this point. I've blocked myself from all circumvent methods I know so it feels good to feel safe right now because tempted or not, it is impossible to watch P.

My smart phone which contains the password is in the lockbox at the moment. Once it is open, I might actually put the laptop power adaptor/charger and lock it again since I feel is a good idea to stop using the laptop completely for a while too.
