I came across the tale of Odysseus and the Sirens.
It's a clean link, no triggers.

It really resonated with me, that even thousands of years ago temptation and resistance were 'things'. We are not the first. Though there are more varieties of temptation in our world than back then, does this make our struggle harder? Can we use the same toolkit to resist and overcome?
I recommend reading it, I took a lot from it.

  2. It really is a great and relevant story. What I admire here is the wisdom of Odysseus, knowing he won't resist the Sirens' song using willpower alone, since no one before him could. He chose instead to cover people's ears with wax and tie himself to the boat, therefore making it impossible to give in. It is pretty much the equivalent of using a porn blocker nowadays, or keeping your devices at bay until urges diminish. Great thing you shared it.

The epic poem Oddysey used to educate youth with the values embeded in these stories.
I recommend you the whole poem of Homer: Oddysey and also Illiad; simbolic stories filled with ancient wisdom.

There is also the tale where Oddyseus and it's friends are trapped in a cave by Poliphemus, a Cyclop tremendously stronger and bigger.
This Cyclop is eating alive the trapped people. And there is no way out or to fight the Cyclop.
However with wisdom, Oddyseus manages to escape and save his life.

We are in a similar situation.
Each one of us has his own Cyclop to fight: porn.
If we don't fight, we'll be consumed by porn.
At first, the battle seems impossible, but with the wisdom shared here, we'll eventually win and save our life!

  4. Of course it's still the same stuff to overcome since hundreds of years. Reading myths helped me greatly in recognizing addiction/societal patterns. Great stuff to explore, thus gaining more awareness.

It's "try smarter not harder" thing for me :)
The same is with porn - PMO addiction is based on instinct. And instinct, this animal power in us is fueling urges and procrastination or is fueling creation and purposeful, meaningful life. The trick is to be more wise than instinct that is powerful but not so smart, to work for greater purpose.
I strongly advise you to read book "Iron John", based on 10 000 years old myth of overcoming instinctual power to serve us. This one should be principially included in every reboot. It's specifically directed to men, to fill the void of absent father/grandfather/elders.
Below - on the left Robert Bly, the one who put this myth in the form of book.
On the right - young man riding his Iron John (instinct), thus becoming KING in his late life (but until it, the crown is on the Iron John head).

Absent father, Hero's journey...This resonate a lot with me and probably with a lof of brothers.
From your description and a fast lookup on reviews about the "Iron John" book, your recommandation seems gold and I'll definetely read it.

    Thanks!

  6. Without this book end exploring masculinity in terms of fatherhood, rites of passage and myths
I wouldn't probably encounter developing healthy psyche and without this my recovery would be stuck in dead end point. It's one of basis of my successful recovery, because this led me to a Greater Purpose, that is bigger and more powerful than my addiction was.

    also:
This one is on my 'to do' lists, until now I'm satisfied with myths but in my life I will need to read also that one.
