Does India block porn sites on the internet? I remember visiting India for a month (from USA) and touching base with my internet/email at one of the many makeshift internet cafes about. Of course, I wasn't attempting to access porn. I also remember that the electricity was out for most of the day (in South East India), so my friend had to access his e-mail after midnight or some such period.

  4. I still think certain things will be able to be bypassed.

Of course, banning porn anywhere is a good thing, but does it really make a difference to PMO? The issue and problem is inside the individual. It's an individual battle. The government cannot take that away. It's something the person has to fight alone.

One is still able to masturbate without porn.

Sorry to sound like a damper, but it's also good to be realistic. There will still be soft core stuff available. All pornographic images from the net cannot be blocked.

Yes, anyone can make porn - however soft or hard - out of anything. You use the raciest thing that's available to you, even if it's an underwear catalog.

And, I COMPLETELY agree with you, as I experience it anyway, that the real struggle for me is masturbation, not porn. I am up to 16 days today, and have had some deathly battles trying not to MO (including today), and not once in this time have I really been tempted toward porn. Don't get me wrong, porn is deadly for me and will always cause me to MO; it's just for me a facilitator to enhance MO rather than any real thrill in and of itself (porn is actually becoming quite a bore - having seen so much of it). Like you indicate, porn is something quite external to the person, whereas MO is rooted in the body, which we can't separate from. Therein lies the battle - for me anyway. I don't doubt and don't downplay, however, cases where porn is a primary problem for some guys - I support them all. We all have our unique battles.

Wow. This actually happened. That's an incredibly ballsy move if it is indeed a government ban.

I think porn is really bad for society, and should be regulated, but to do it overnight directly against the a high court ruling is not very politically savvy, and might even be detrimental to the anti porn movement. You finally get a leadership willing to take action against porn and they do something like this that may cause them to lose re-election or even impeached and removed from office. Then there goes any momentum the Indian anti-porn movement may have had.

You can slowly chip away at the "harmless fun" mindset with education, websites like NoFap, and minor regulations until you have public opinion on your side and can make real change... Or can take all your ammunition and fire point blank at porn and have it ricochet back at you. Stupid.

If this was the current Mobi administration, they probably won't be able to make any lasting change when it comes to porn policy, which is really sad since they actually had the motivation to do it, but they blew their load far too prematurely. Dumb.

Banning porn will certainly reduce the availability of Explicit Contents drastically. I feel its just like STEP BY STEP. People think what sex is just like in PORN and they try to imitate them in their real sex life. The sex education should be more prior. In a society like parents (generally) dont talk much openly to children about sexuality sex education has an important role.
After Banning porn Govt would be promoting more sex education.Thats what i feel. Moreover Every one should know details about Male and female body parts in detail. Its not only for BIOLOGY STUDENTS. (I dont think Commerce or other stream students wont understand that topic becuz its quiet interesting for everyone :p )
Also, what Govt is aiming is not for changing the present addicts. THEIR MOTIF IS TO PROTECT THE UPCOMING GENERATION FROM OVERUSING PORN.AS TECHNOLOGY IS IMPROVING DAY BY DAY EVEN KIDS HAVE THEIR OWN LAPTOPS AND TABLETS SO THE EXPOSURE TO PORN(Which kids dont have any idea about what it is) CAN BE CURB AT A YOUNGER AGE.

well definitely fellas. It is the definitely possible to bypass such stuff. And yes it is also an inner battle. All I am saying is that irrespective of what our political affiliations are, this definitely was a good step(some say it was taken by the apex court, some say that the government did it, idk which one it is). And masquerade, you are absolutely right about your point on everyone having their own tech.
From what I caught on the news, the experts recommended it saying it is especially harmful for teenagers. And something like this I feel is very much necessary. Sure, the tech savvies will find a way out to bypass this. But the non techies will be forced to stop won't they? This may not help even 60% of the Indian population. The way I see it, even if 10% are helped out by this ban, it works for me. I mean, I know people in my school, who actually say pornography is good for the economy and that it has many health benefits. I find it the most convenient excuse for evading the fact that by watching porn they r not just harming themselves, but also committing a crime by clicking on a video.

And lets face it. This ban wont last long. A bunch of idiots will start a protest saying it is a violation of democratic rights by banning something. And soon enough things will go back to normal. But it might take some time during which the dopamine and the delta fosB might recede in our brains and we have a better chance to stay away from this shit for a longer time.

agreed, just like with certain drugs. You cant ban something and expect it to go away. This is the 21st century, ppl can get anything they want basically. Ppl need to be educated that porn has negative effects in the long term.

I think this ban is very, VERY well-intentioned, and a part of me could rejoice to this. At the same time, this:

I think it would be more effective if they treated porn like how we treat tobacco; provide a LOT of material saying the risks behind it before you make a decision.

  14. Caveat Emptor

This. It won't last because because it happened overnight without any kind of democratic practice. It's the kind of thing you'd expect from a totalitarian government like North Korea. The Indian courts will outlaw it soon.

@bandanana, agreed. Education, which is used heavily in tobacco policy, is the way to go.

What better way to send the educational message to the masses that porn is harmful than enforcing a ban on it? People will still get porn but the access to it will now be more of a conscious choice as it was in the past. Some children are getting access to violent pornography without even searching for it! I think we need to think of innocent children here because a lot of parents operate with zero knowledge that their kids have access to porn online.

I once read an article that privacy screens were invented solely for pornographers so that they could get men in India, who tend to share their homes with many relatives, to watch porn. They couldn't figure out why more Indian men were not consuming porn and it was a huge untapped heavily populated market. I mean when is enough enough ya know? Porn nearly destroyed my marriage and it is a slow seeping evil that leaves innocent children in it's wake. Something needs to be done and education, although great, is not enough.

Zod is right. I mean, when the parliamentarians themselves watch porn in the house, how could u expect something like this?
surely it is politically motivated. And limead is correct as well. Thats how i got into porn as well. Trying to access a song website, typed a wrong extension, i entered a porn website(or rather, porn entered my life).
And most ppl here are talking about educating teenagers. I agree with them 100%. Kids, especially teenagers need to be taught integrity. They shudnt feel confused abt wht is right or wrong. As I mentioned earlier, most porn addict teenagers justify themselves by saying that porn and prostitution are good both for health and society at large.

  17. Yes major porn site have been bolcked till now around 856 and the counting is still on. But a certain category porn sites are band i.e which contain the anti-social stuff ...Happy to see our government is serious about what there youngster's consuming on internet.

  19. @Congrelous we are the youngest country in world in repect of average age and as you know what are the side effects of porn.

That is one of the reason you are here.
And suppose if government would not ban these sites which have exterm violence and unhuman things in it then it may have a long term bad effect on our social structure which contains most youth.
And if government do censorship in this repect we should support it.

They also say this in North Korea. Don't question your leaders.

I'm aware that India is a fundamentally collectivist culture, like China, although much different obviously.

I just don't think it's going to work. As India modernizes, technology is going to force its hand. Pandora's Box has been opened.

It is no measure of goodness to be forced to make the right choice in the absence of choice.

I don't know if you are familiar with the story of Job in the Christian Bible?
