I got way into VR porn a couple years ago. I was going through a rough time and was alone a lot. It’s insanely addictive. I literally had to throw the headset in the garbage otherwise I knew I would never stop. In the end it just leaves you feeling empty like every other type of porn.

  2. Honestly I hadn't thought about it in detail but being that it is a powerful technology, using it to empower recovery instead of addiction would of course be nice.

Now that you mention it, my first thought may be a recovery themed MMO (maybe not so massive though - hard to imagine that many people using it) but I wouldn't want it to be totally AI driven considering the nature of some existing addictive tech and the role algorithms play in it.

Also considering VR itself can be addictive, we need to consider that as another layer and not just have the addictive tendency totally transfer over the platform even if it is recovery software. It'd be like someone who is addicted to sexting/camming that ends up doing the non-sexual version of it, or some form of social media for recovery even though they were addicted with porn on the same platform or very similar ones. Even if someone didn't previously have any tendency towards a gaming addiction we wouldn't want them to develop a new addiction.

Along this line of thought, something that's occurred to me about the Rat Park study, about how they are not as likely to be addicted to whatever substance in the enriched environment is the fact that these online platform ARE an "enriched" environment rather than a thing in the environment, and like Jaron Lanier points out it is a Skinner box that creates the operant conditioning. So considering we're in an age where you can be addicted to an entire platform like that, I guess something really essential with this kind of software would have to be skill that translate to real life, and maybe even reminders within the software that says hey, this platform itself can be addictive.

Things have to become worse before they start becoming better.
I think after the youth will be hooked on vr porn , and it will cripple our youth like no other epidemic, governments* around the world will start to take actions.

*All except the US , since the US is run by big corporations rather than by elected puppets.

I think you're on to something there. If it goes mainstream enough. Not just porn, but epic video games, movies where you play the hero, virtual holidays etc. etc. If this hurts the economy, and subsequently big business, watch how quickly it gets regulated.

Of course VR would become a massive industry in itself. But if too many people quit their job or are just emotionally absent and can't wait to get home, it will become an enemy of the economy.

Unless you turn VR users into human batteries like in The Matrix.

  7. Maybe 360 VR porn escalation will be enough and breaking point to put more awareness for problem of porn at all. I guess destructiveness of this behavior will be obvious if even some porn addicts here realized how hooked they can become and had quit this stuff immediatelly.
