I don't use a smart phone. My reasons for this is because of porn addiction. I can't block a smartphone up the same way I can block up a laptop. Then yes I have my laptop blocked up beyond belief, with certain configurations where bypass is next to impossible, and even if it was possible, the amount of hassle it would take to get around it isn't even worth it for me to even attempt it.

But I made a post about this recently about basically being forced to use a smartphone, and it basically happened again over the last few days. Basically my housing association was annoyed at me because I didn't have a smartphone because they text certain information, links to their tenants smartphones. Then yesterday I went out for lunch with my friend, and the only way to order food was using the app to order the food. The place obviously was making people use the app instead of cueing because of covid. My friend obviously ordered my lunch on the app on his smartphone. But if I was in there myself I wouldn't of been able to get anything.

So yeah it seems like people are basically being forced to use a smartphone these days.

  2. Bruv, I am the same way. I have the remake of the Nokia 3210. Old school.

I remember going to Wetherspoons last summer for a few cheeky pints. Because of the covid related hygiene fascism a lady greeted me at the door and asked me to scan the QR code for test and trace purposes. When I told her I didn't own a smartphone, she looked at me like I was off my head.

When I finally got to sit down, I had to order two or three pints at a time because they had to actually come to me a take my order, i.e., table service, which took fucking ages. And, of course, I had no way of ordering drinks via the app.

It was a nightmare, to be honest. I have since given up drinking.

I read yesterday about an OAP, who got all suited and booted for his first outing down the pub since the lockdown restrictions were lifted, but he was left sitting there like a pillock because he didn't have a smartphone. Some nice geezer noticed him, took pity, and bought him a drink.

  4. Nah, man, I am happy with my retrograde technologies, it is other people who seemingly aren't.

Smart phones make you dumb. The smarter phones become, the more stupid you become.

Did you ever play Lemmings? If you removed all the manhole covers on a street in London (where I live), you could play Lemmings for real because no one would notice as they are completely transfixed by their screens.

I honestly don't think I could have anywhere near as good a blocking system on a phone as what I could on a laptop. Basically I think on a phone it would be much easier to bypass. Then another issue with a phone is even if I got to a point where I made bypassing the configuration next to impossible, I still feel like I wouldn't have it restricted enough. I don't think it would be anywhere near as restricted as my laptop.

This is no word of a lie, the most sexually graphic thing that I have access to the majority of the time is restricted youtube videos. I would even be freaking out these days if I could access safe mode google images. That's where I have ended up with the way I have been restring myself for so long. I basically don't want to use anything less now.

I also think it is good to have decent breaks from the internet altogether. So I feel like when you're out the house, at that point you should not be on the internet at all. But the issue these days is people are constantly on the internet, even when they are out the house, because they are on the internet on their smartphones.

It's not good in my opinion.

I remember that thread. I encourage you to stand your ground. Do you have the confidence to tell your friend why you do not want to have a smartphone? It is good to have real life accountability (if they are willing).

My friend knows yes. My close friends and family know. I have told them I am addicted to porn and I restrict it.

But again the issue with this is I think a lot of people would still find it strange. But then say someone didn't have a smartphone because they were heavily addicted to gambling, and couldn't have a smartphone because they would gamble all their money away. The annoying thing is if you told someone that is why you didn't have a smartphone I feel like most people would be much more understanding of that. But if you told someone you don't have a smartphone because you're a porn addict, I honestly think most people would be no where near as understanding about that, and would likely think it's strange.

As I said I only tell my close friends and family anyway. But I just think in general that most people would probably think it's strange if someone didn't have a smartphone just because they're addicted to porn.

    Oh yeah :D
It is a good comparison. Especially in the UK, people are very awkward about anything to do with sex. Gambling is a bad addiction and destroys families, loses homes etc. But it is not such an awkward topic if it comes up. It is societal stigma I suppose. At least you can be yourself with the ones you trust and care about.

  12. I own a Cat B30. I have a Kindle but is a gift. Mostly of people didn't notice that they does not use a phone, but a small computer, and they spend less than 1% of their time to call someone, is not a phone, they just are addicted to portable computers, and they are extremly addictive.

I guess I'm just too sybarite to watch porn in a smartphone, the screen is too small, for that, and only that reason I never had that problem and I even find it utterly weird that people uses their phone to watch porn at all.

I have a smartsphone but I use it mostly for instant messaging and checking some handy apps like brokerage apps and such.

I never watched porn on my smartphone either though when I had access to porn and artificial sexual stimulation on my laptop. But what I found is when I began restricting my laptop and couldn't access porn on my laptop I did gravitate to the smartphone.

What I have found is if I was desperate enough I would go on any device to see porn and artificial sexual stimulation. But again back when I had access to porn and artificial sexual stimulation on my laptop I wouldn't watch it on any other device. I actually thought the exact same way as you, that going on porn on my smartphone was no where near as good as going on porn on my laptop.

But I honestly do believe if all of a sudden your smartphone became the only device you could access porn and artificial sexual stimulation on, that you'd adapt to this pretty damn quick.

    It's happened yet again lol.

I got locked out my amazon account because amazon randomly decided to add a security authorization feature where I couldn't log into my account, and amazon sent a link to my phone, and to verify that it was me I had to click on the link on my phone which would take me onto a page which would then allow me to log into my account.

But I don't use a smartphone lol. Why did amazon automatically assume I would be using a smartphone? Why didn't they just send a text to my phone with a code to verify it was me? I was forced to add my mobile phone number to my amazon account. But a mobile phone number doesn't automatically mean it's a smartphone that I own.

I literally had to phone amazon customer service to get them to allow me back into my account.

I am telling you, being forced to use a smartphone is a thing in this day and age.

  16. Yes, and you have to look at what you can change rather than what you can't.

I have a MVNO that I'm able to access texts by web. That doesn't work with the Amazon system because it's a link, but if it's a one-time code I can type it in. Of course in this situation I have access to the web (at work) but the issue is my PHONE doesn't. Actually what I figured out was I can text my work email with the link and from there I can click on it.

Instead of just thinking "block," I think people need to think strategy - which means specifics. I still have an old smartphone but no data service, but that means I could open it up to the wifi at a place of business to do a quick thing like that, or download GPS map etc. Think about the logic step by step. Of course in this situation you have to resist buying data when you have an urge, for me that's not a problem but I realize for someone else it may be.

In short I think there are two issues: 1. Lack of detailed strategy/not thinking in enough detail about it and 2. lack of INTERNAL programming - meaning your own mind. Ultimately you gotta take care of #2, and while that may take time if someone has been at this for a long time I think they should ask the question what if they've been working on that level all that time? And you can work on the external in more detail via #1. If you're concerned with wifi security change your password later that day when you get back to a computer.

What these two points have in common is we have to think like a programmer so you're able to tweak it on the fly and adjust when needed. I think it is no longer realistic to go by a program someone else lays out for you especially with an issue like this rather than something substance based.

  17. Yes, I find this really annoying as well. I'm the same as you, OP. Don't have a smart phone. Never had one, and don't feel like spending the money to get something I just wouldn't use. Now so many places are just assuming you have one, and you can't even go to a baseball game, use Telegram, order a taxi, etc without one. It's frustrating.

Based thread. I wanna try to live one week like I was still in the early 90’s pre-internet and pre mobile phone days. I already hate how much time I spend on smartphone. I’m going to severely limit it.

  19. i am forced to use goverment stuff with sms verification so when i do not have the phone i am unable to get school stuff done.

I only use me phone for this and to send some messages to two poeple thats it.

I went a half year phone free and it was amazing.

I agree that on a laptop u can block more stuff beterr.

  20. they want you to use a phone so they can track you. a smart phone is a privacy and security nightmare.
