Good luck with that, they had to go out on the streets with megaphones when a bunch of north east Indians thought their penises were shrinking.

  2. Great points. Honestly, I think that the swift sword of justice should be more targeted and whenever possible, avoid collateral damage. Human trafficking, rape, sexual abuse, child abuse, etc are all despicable and I wish that the world would invest more energy, effort, attention, finances, etc into relentlessly combating these injustices.

@giggleshmack brought up some great points and solutions as well that I haven't thought of to post before, especially with media outreach, public service announcements, porn addiction research, etc.

Made up #s: But really if 30% of the public wants to watch porn, I think that even if a majority of the public (say 60%) doesn't want to use it, they shouldn't restrict those who want to from their human right of beating it to internet porn. Maybe if 95% of people don't want porn, then create an opt-in program for porn or something. Some sort of software that comes shipped with routing devices that could be disabled. I dunno.

But I think that as more and more people learn about this issue, eventually porn will be similar to cigarettes, generally known to be unhealthy, but some people will choose to use it anyway. I just want young people to have the chance to learn that it is unhealthy before they are likely to actually use it, give them a fair shot of avoiding it. I want to give parents all of the tools they need to easily keep internet porn out of their households to avoid their children from being inadvertently exposed to it. And should people want to quit, there should probably be better support and resources for them. And most of all, we need to have a public discussion about all of this.

I was hypothetically thinking what would I do if I knew such a ban was coming place.

The scary thing is I would try to download as many explicit videos as I could and convert them to mp4. It's strange how suddenly it came to fruition in India (and then was lifted). But this really puts the cats amongst the pigeons. The question is, what about the single guy that's never been laid, or the aging and divorced old man. Immediately we think, well poor them. They don't get to have sex? Shouldn't they allowed to look at porn?

But the truth is, porn is the exploitation of human beings. This isn't a violation of our viewing human rights. What about the human rights of the porn starlets?

I remember watching a documentary about a guy that was disabled and him mom took him to Amsterdam knowing that he probably might never get laid in real life. At first we were made to feel sorry for this guy, but then the documentary took a turn and opened our eyes to pain it causes on the prostitute.

As to the question about our 'violation of choice and freedom.' Perhaps this is a case of we're used to it so it doesn't seem as bad. But where else do we draw the line, buying sex, rape?

  5. Totally agree on many points! There needs to be stricter legislation to remove trafficking, sexual abuse, exploitation, and manipulation in the porn and sex industries. Like, this is a huge problem. A HUGE problem. But a lot of porn these days is filmed by single people, couples, etc in their own homes, not production companies, either to make money or practice some form of exhibitionism. For proof, there is the massive
    GoneWild
subreddit where monetization is strictly banned and 99%+ of posters are independently-acting exhibitionist women.

I don't think that blocking internet porn websites solves very much about the shitty porn producers out there. There needs to be separate laws to protect our world's most vulnerable.

The "your words" part I made reference to was when you mentioned that it was up to the websites to choose to make their content public. This is funny cos it kinda contradicts your statement that the internet is not a public space. :)

It was me who said its offensive and dangerous.

I wouldn't ban hammers, no. But I would ban alcohol, cigarettes, porn, gambling and anything else which is highly addictive and damaging to society.

  11. The ban has been removed, only child porn is banned and there is a government list in the public domain with urls 800 porn sites on it.
The ban was a terrible idea.

I wish I knew how to articulate me feeling on this issue better but … hhhmmm

Addiction is not an issue for morality for me. People are hard wired with many instincts: many instincts that directly mediated by the "pleasure principle". To me, the spiritual goal of life is understanding one's own instincts and learning to choose between ones that are higher or lower - ultimately seeing that things like porn really don't offer maximized pleasure when compared to much more lofty and spiritual ones like community, family, intellectual stimulation, education, music, literature, etc. Some instincts are very primitive (though necessary) and more related to our more animalistic evolutionary heritage and some are more uniquely human. The more human ones include art, literature, science etc. A ban on porn sort of distracts from the need to create a society and a culture that isn't so harsh and materialistic in the first place … a culture that nurtures (ideally) everyone and doesn't contribute to large groups of people wanting or needing to dissociate so badly that they get addicted to things like porn or drugs or whatever.
I suppose my problem with a ban is that it's a little like a drug addict blaming a drug dealer for their addiction. On the other hand, I do wonder if the instincts related to porn are so strong that it is foolish to think we have enough power to avoid them … particularly given the kind of proliferation that the internet has created. Maybe are brains are too sensitive to deal with what internet porn has become. I don't know.

Porn websites could possibly be banned but not porn. Porn is the natural product of a liberal society that separates morals from ethics. Not all porn actors are trafficked and neither would all be exploited and miserable. If a society goes out of bounds to lend support to some form of immoral behaviour, it is rather hypocritical to support banning another.

Having said that, such efforts of defending morality that give a message to the masses should be encouraged or else we should all join in on the PMO fun again. If you know something is wrong for you, wouldn't you want your beloved brethren to save themselves?

As long as I agree that some of you may be happy about it, I feel this is strongly infringing civil liberties. This should be their own choice whether to watch porn or not and government shouldn't decide for them.

  17. It was to some extent expected, but I'm still a little surpriesd how many people welcome a ban of porn. Just because an individual doesn't like it, forcing these personal views on a complete society is very egocentric, especially when scientific proof is not sufficient. I also think most of the positive effects and the development of character many people here experience during PMO-abstinence is due to the reboot process and the difficulty of it. I think people can learn more if they find their way out of porn (if they even want to) than by never being exposed to it.

There should not have had to been a ban. Porn shouldn't exist at all, but sex sells so what can you do. I mean really!? What the hell can people like us do except help the lady who is being mentally cheated on by her husband or the man with PIED!?

People who say it should not be banned because of "civil liberties" don't know what the hell they are talking about. People don't have a "right" to view porn. It is something created and endorsed by our society. Greed and lust created porn. I do not support it and giving ignorant reasons like "civil liberties" is like using evolution to explain why men cheat or "need variety".

People need to wake up. This isn't against our rights or anything of the sort. The Internet isn't a free and open space and if you think that you are naive. Naive to how the world works. Everything we do is monitored daily. Everything. Every time you use the Internet, someone knows. Every time you watch porn, someone knows. We are not free. We are not "losing our rights" because something harmful is banned. Your" rights" are a damn mirage and you all need to wake up.

Harmful substances should be banned. Fucking capitalism man. The second tobacco was proven to be harmful or cause cancer....banned. The second consuming alcohol was proven to cause idiocy and drunk driving car wreck....banned. The second heroine was proven harmful....cocaine, meth, porn, opium, acid, etc. etc. etc. banned

Yes, I know some of these things can be good for medical purposes, but that's it. None of these things help with recreational use. Yes, of course, people are going to still abuse it, but at least people would know they are bad. It should be enforced. Not a god damn person I have met in the past two years thinks porn, alcohol, or tobacco are bad. "Oh sure, tobacco causes cancer and alcohol causes stomach ulcers, but that isn't a big deal"

God, why haven't I been assassinated yet? Being self aware really puts a lot of stress on me

Call me a dictator, call me a black and white thinker, call me whatever the hell you want. Open your eyes and I'm sure you can see just how horrible the world really is.
