So I guess insomnia is a fairly common side effect of a reboot, which I have experienced for a couple days now. I'll get in bed and fall asleep but I can't STAY asleep. Constant twisting and turning side to side. My mind wanders and I can't help but think about everything when I should just be relaxing. Not to mention my dreams have become more and more boner-central in the past few nights. I've had some sleep problems in the past and have done some experimenting with melatonin and zzzquil type stuff but nothing seems to work that well.

Firing the old meat missile was a nightly ritual for me right before bed but now that's gone and I think it's made sleeping even worse. When I wake up I just feel like crap. Anyone got anything that worked for you? Sleep is so important I just want to get it right.

I always used to beat off before bed, too. It's been hard falling asleep now without that release. A couple things that've helped me are meditating right before bed. Then when I'm in bed I lay on my back with a pillow under my knees and in consciously relax my body part by part (focus on my toes & say 'relax your toes' in my head, then my calves, etc.). After a couple nights of doing this I find it's really helping shit down my body.

Also, a friend of mine suggested I try kava kava root extract or tea-that stuff really helps me sleep & it's all-natural. Hope some of that helps man! Keep fighting the good fight!

You're right that everybody experiences insomnia at the start of their reboot.
Just keep your mind off any anxieties and enjoy the ride. :)

You know there is a local health foods place that has some sleep oriented tea there. I think I might go try it out. I'm absolutely horrible at meditating but I guess I should keep trying.

Yeah, I found that kava kava tea at a health food store. I've been told it's good to view meditation as a practice-like anything you practice, the more you do it, the better you get. I like thinking about it that way.

After years of experimenting with herbal sleep remedies I've finally found a "stack" that works pretty well for me.

For starters, you ought to try to wake up at the same time every day (especially on the weekends!) Commit to a time of night you'd like to be asleep by and sort of plan out those last few hours to not include TV/computers/electronics. The light from the screen WILL keep you awake. I started reading before again. If reading isn't your thing, maybe do some journaling or drawing. Whatever works for you. Exercise during the day will help a lot, too.

To get a consistent bedtime you can try using melatonin. I usually take 2 5mg pills 1hr or 30 minutes before bed. Be sure you have enough time to sleep close to 8 hours. In the past I have used valerian root but have found I feel a bit too groggy/fuzzy in the morning. Also the valerian root may have been exhaserbating my depression.

I currently use L-tryptophan and ZMA almost every night and these seem to help give me more restful, consistent sleep without any morning fog. Kava-kava is good but watch it if you are a drinker or have liver issues. I wouldn't rely on it as a go-to sleep aid. Chammomile, catnip, valerian root, certain kinds of lettuce- all are known to encourage sleep. You can find blends of different herbs at Meijer and health food stores in the sleep aisle or in the vitamins. Like I said it took a long time for me to find a combo of supps that worked consistently without adverse side effects. Of course everyone is different, and what works for me may not work for you.

    Good luck!

    @A7teck
Wow thanks for all the supp recommendations! I'll definitely look into L-tryptophan and ZMA. I'm still playing around with the right cocktail of stuff for minimal side effects. I only take 3mgs of melatonin but hey if you take 10 then I'll try it for a while!

I know about the screen light keeping you awake and have been trying to stop the screen usage before bed. It's hard though when i'm just as addicted to gaming as I am PMO.

By the way to anyone interested there’s an awesome program I discovered a few months ago while researching the screenlight before bed problem. It's free and called f.lux and is availiable for all OS's out there I think. What it does is at whatever time your sunset is (you put in your zip code) it takes all the blue light out of your screen. The blue light is what really fries your eyes. Alot of people don't realize the default light put out by our computer screens is SUPER bright and while it's suitable for daytime viewing, it can be really harsh when the sun goes down. Check it out! Link below!

I've heard about those apps, but I figured I'd be better off just powering everything down. I find I get a lot more done in those 1-2 hrs before bed without electronics- laundry miraculously ends up where it should, my room stays cleaner. I used to read a ton, and after marriage/kids/REAL LIFE I probably haven't finished a book in 5 years. But I've finished 3 in the past week so...its just a matter of swapping habits. Yellow-tinted glasses supposedly work to counter the blue-light, but I do not know if this is true.

And yes, "certain kinds of lettuce"! There are strains of lettuce that I think are related to the poppy (California lettuce is one, I believe- no pun intended!)

With the melatonin, its been my experience that once the brain and body get into a sleep cycle (3 days or so of regular melatonin use) the melatonin becomes less effective.

Hot epsom salt baths are a pretty sure fire way to be passed out in about half an hour also.

It is part of the reboot.

Forgive my quick judgment but I think the percentage of guys who suffer insomnia in their first few weeks of rebooting is close to one hundred percent.

The good news is that you can rest assured that this is normal and you will get over it.

This happened to me too, but it passed. I think rebooting is like changing diet - your system needs to adjust and the adjusting process might not be easy. It passes, though, so keep going :)

  14. As others have said, your system will just adjust accordingly when it's ready. Just be patient for it, your sleep pattern will soon fix itself.

When this used to happen to me, I'd always just find something to do. Never just lay in your bed when you cannot sleep. That is one of the worst times for temptation. You're laying there with so much sexual frustration and testosterone. Your mind is going to have a field day with sexual thoughts. Do something. Play a video game, watch something educational, informative on youtube, and as soon as you feel tired again head straight back to sleep.

That is the only advice I can give you, due to my own experiences.

    All the best, mate.

Just know that you're on the right track, nonetheless. That's the most important thing.

It doesn't take long at all before your sleep pattern gets back to normal. It will be quicker than you think. Trust me on that.

  16. Keep going my brother. I've been watching your posts and your progress for a while. I care about you, man. You can do this! Never stop! Always remember how horrible it feels after PMO. At first, the thought of it seems so inviting and tempting, but then when you eventually go with the thought, you then realise how terrible it feels afterwards. No matter how tough it feels, ALWAYS remember that you are in a much better state like this, as opposed to how you'd feel if you allowed yourself to relapse. Remember that right now, now in this very moment, you are living. PMO can make you literally feel like death. So just ask yourself ever time. Is a 5 second moment of intense pleasure worth the exchange of living EVERY moment of feeling pleasure and enjoying the benefits of Nofap?

Lets put away PMO for good :)

I have found a nice nighttime camomile tea helps me sleep. It won't knock you out but it does relax the body. I understand having that night time wank before before bed. It takes some serious discipline to change your body of that habit. I have had vivid sexual dreams that just make it so difficult to not then masturbate when you wake up.

I don't know if this helps but what I have found to be true is that this is all apart of the process. We must learn to endure the withdrawals if we want to have lasting freedom. But it is something that we can learn.
