Is porn addiction comparable to drug addiction?

I have been asking myself this question for quite a while. Porn addiction has certainly had a massive negative impact on my life. When I relapse, I watch these videos for hours. Always looking for the perfect video without ever finding it. I had to watch it even though I hated it. I didn't care about all the negative consequences at that moment. When I stopped, I also had definite withdrawal symptoms. When I relapsed after a long abstinence, the first moment really felt like a drug high. An incredible kick. However, despite everything, I was amost of the time able to lead a normal life, even if it was negatively affected.

I would be interested to know how you see it. Do you think porn addiction is as bad as drug addiction? And why do you have this opinion or another one?

I am grateful for any answer.

  2. I just came across this quote in the post of another member ( https://forum.nofap.com/index.php?threads/a-45-year-affliction.310738/page-2#post-3032726 ) :
"Crack cocaine addiction is often thought to be among the most difficult forms of addiction to address, but clients I have treated who are addicted to both crack and sex tell me that recovery from their addiction to crack came more easily than their recovery from their addiction to sex. Of course, recovery from addiction to sex is complicated by the fact that sex is a natural and healthy human drive. Total abstinence is possible and necessary in recovery from addiction to substances, whereas recovery from addiction involves reestablishing a healthy relationship to sex and keeping it in the context of a committed partnership, not giving it up permanently."
Milton Magnus, Stop Sex Addiction, page 65-66.

In my personal opinion the key is this sentence:
"An incredible kick. However, despite everything, I was almost of the time able to lead a normal life, even if it was negatively affected."

It's what I would call a 'functioning addict' - we might have a job, relationships, family, friends, ... The problem is how it deteriorares your life, not just how unfulfilling, unauthentic and wasteful is - a lot of people without PMO addiction or even any addictions live shitty, empty lives, and nobody cares - it's how it destroys an integral part of you.

I wouldn't say it is worse than drug addiction, it is just different than any addiction we have seen in the past, in the sense that internet has made it almost instantaneous, anywhere at any time, with very little cost and relatively anonymous - you don't have to go to the streets to get your fix, don't have to face your dealer. It's so easy. You don't need even to take the time to go to the adult bookstore and buy some mags or to the X section of the rental video shop. You can have it when you *need* it.

It's also related to a human function, in this sense it looks more like an eating disorder than drug abuse.

I think it has a stigma that almost no other addiction has, it is difficult to talk about it, even if you are not a religious person, it's hard to confess that you can't control your sexual impulses. Even in the news you'll see more high profile cases of (real life) sexual addicts than internet porn addicts (there have been a few cases though, which is good).

Because it's so different it's hard to categorize and to deal with it.

@internetpioneer thank you so much for your post! I've been through such gross things with P. It's been like a black shadow on my life for a while now. I personally find it more and more comparable to other addictions even drug addictions. Your analysis with the functioning addict hits it perfectly. I think there are many functioning PMO addicts. It's largely free and it's easy to hide. No bad smell or red eyes. It just stays a secret. A really dark secret.

The drugs are worst for sure , cause they kill all the body slowly.
The porn is a child compared with them on my opinion.

  5. Yes, but sometimes not so slowly... when I see pictures of heroin or crack addicts in their 30s, I realize that the PMO addiction though destructive as it is will give you a second chance.
