Thor from the MCU. He has lost so much. Family, his home, his hammer, half of his people, his pride, the opportunity to save the Universe. Only then he could actually care for others (like he wanted to stop professer hulk from using the stones, because he was afraid of losing his friend) and actually believe in others and support them ("I knew it!" when Cap lifts Mjölnir. He did, but he wasn't able to admit it before) and the strongest will for action (after caps famous "Avengers, assemble" it's Thor who screams first).

Hellblazer is a good pick. Just plain funny. I'm about to start a Solomon Kane book, he seems like an interesting hero (or anti-hero). Eric Draven (The Crow) is pretty sick too. But I'm thinking my real favorite would have to be Elric of Melniboné, just plain epic.
