So recently I just watched this documentary The Social Dilemma and I am scared out of my mind.

If I had known what would happen when I first opened a Facebook account and started seeing funny videos on Youtube I would have moved me and the family to a community without electricity and I am not joking. Now I know that social media helped keeping me addicted to being online and looking for content to feed my addictions.

I get why the movie received such raving reviews and why it received all those awards but oh my am I scared. I need to do something. I posted about it on Facebook to try and fight back and suddenly lots of aggressive comments were made it was almost like I was backed in to a corner. but that's how it works I supposed. We're sitting ducks and I for one really need to detox. I've installed programs for my browsers to block content and deleted accounts on all sorts of social media with the toxic business model but it's so hard.

At one point I got addicted to seeing videos with sexual content that I find offensive. And I never understood why. It gave me no sexual pleasure. The site I was on had the same type of newsfeed that so many social media get and suddenly I understand why I couldn't just shut it down.

Sorry I meant nominations for awards. It might not get awards if social media has anything to say about it.

I quit social media in January. Still have to use it for work, but the account is used by boomers so I just read a few of Chelsea Handler’s Instagram posts about how much she hates men while baring her tits and then log off.

Once you’ve been off social media (Twitter/ Reddit/ Instagram/ Facebook) it seems obscene how stupid the world is, but my days are instead spent preparing for law school or watching cool documentaries and lectures, reading books, etc.

The best part isn’t blocking that trash out, but rather getting on the other side and not even missing it. When people tell me to get back on Instagram, it seems like such a battle. Everyone is either angry, ignorant, or selling something, or all three.

Did you just do it over night? Has anyone you know quit since you told them why you did? I don't know what to tell people. Someone I care about is very much addicted and I'm not sure a documentary is going to be enough to get him out.

Social Media is like a crazy cult. Most of us get introduced to it by friends or family who wants to share something and because people trust each other but getting out is not as easy.

Yeah well the law school exam is extremely hard so that actually really pushed out all the extra shit. I quit everything over night. Porn, cigs, social media. Weaning off of stuff has never worked out for me. My family has a ton of addicts and I think even though I don’t have problems with drugs and alcohol, when I do get addicted to something I usually can’t control it. If I could have a single cig on a night out with my friends I wouldn’t have quit 4 years ago.

If you have an hour, watch the video in my sig. It's not religious or motivational. Since you've seen the horrors of social media, it'll deepen your understanding of what, who and why.

As for what you can do: Give it all up (as best as possible). The golden age of the internet is over.
