Social media and porn addiction

    Hey, guys!

    I'd like to start a thread on thoughts about the influence of social media on increasing PMO habits. What are your experiences about this issue?

    On the last months, I've been triggered a lot on content available on very popular platforms, like Instagram, Tik Tok and Twitch. How your journeys fit into using or leaving these and other social media platforms?

    On thing to take note is the reasons why a person goes to those places in the first place. I first started posting on internet forums in the year 2000 during my first summer out of high school. At the time I was very socially awkward, had a handful of friends in the local community and no drivers license. The internet forum was one of the ways I learned to socialize going into my early twenties. Over this time I progressively found my way into internet pornography. Part of the reason I went to porn was it being easier and safer than talking to girls. Another is following the crowd of "everybody views porn".

    I initially went to Facebook as a means to connect with people locally.

    The platform I use the most would be YouTube. If a person doesn't want to ditch the platform they will have to be very choosy what content they view. Like going to a porn website, we largely choose what we view. Granted, a piece of triggering content could be recommended in our feed. At that point it would be wise to use whatever tools the platform has to filter out that content and then post about it in a place such as the NoFap forum. Triggers are everywhere. We have choice over how we react to them.

    For some people ditching the platform is the best option, especially early on in their journey. The idea behind the 90 day reboot can be applied to all social media. At a later date they can see if they even want to go back. For me, just browsing from video to video on YouTube can be just as much a time waster as going from porn vid to porn vid.

    At the moment I may be two or three weeks away from Facebook. I see myself visiting YouTube less frequently. Something to think about. If I remove "this thing", what will I replace it with? Covid may hinder things a bit, but, I recommend keeping an eye out for safe events where a person can socialize face to face.

    I don't actually have any social media accounts.

    But images and videos online are such a problem for me that I have all images and videos blocked on every site, except for specifically allowed sites.

    That's a balanced and wise approach that I've implemented for some time using social media. But, over time, the tricks and pitfalls on its design threatens our good intentions on a "healthy" use. For me, it requires a lot of self-discipline and awareness to maintain that balanced mindset on using social media platforms.
     
  6. Social media is a landmine when it comes to porn addiction. Hot girls are everywhere on social media. Best to avoid social media unless you have friends on there or you have a business.

    Although, I’m not going to lie. Life can be very boring at times and social media does help to fill the time. Especially YouTube.

    I deleted my Instagram, Twitter, and never made a Tik Tok to begin with. I could never get behind how cringe the platform is.

    In my opinion, deleting social media was a great decision. I don't just mean deleting the app, I deleted the entire account. I went all in. I think social media can be used in very positive ways, but unfortunately, it can be used in a lot of toxic ways as well. Just like that statistic about the internet being comprised of mostly pornographic material, I look at social media as the same kind of monster. (By the way, I am not sure if that statistic is accurate or not when it comes to social media, but most of what I have seen on it is toxic and triggering.)

    Try deleting them. What do you have to lose? It is just another addiction.

    Do your best to delete anything provocative, if you can not - the website is not worth visiting.
     
  9. What is your purpose for engaging with these platforms? Is the time you spend on these platforms helping you build a better body or putting you on the road to making more money?

    It is helps to not use so much those applications, doing that the possibilities to see triggers it is less.
    I 'm trying to stay away from them because of this .

    Surely, staying away from social media has helped me during this challenge. Buh after 90 days, I’ll come back to them, with a safer, more healthier approach.

    The answers to your questions are "no" and "no". haha
    I've been using mostly Twitch on the last few weeks, especially on moments of entertainment and rest from daily activities. But it's interesting to see how this specific social media is designed to maintain viewers locked in on the platform and spent as much time as possible on it. Another thing that bothers me is the over-stimulation that prevails on Twitch, which at same time brings some kind of rush for more dopamine and stimuli. Of course there are positive things I find on it (interaction with others, fun and relaxation), but I'm questioning if the cons aren't excessive enough to leave this platform too.
     
  13. Sounds like it comes down to time spent. An hour a day to relax, not such a bad thing. Two hours that turns into three? Find better ways to spend your time.

    I just remembered I had disabled notifications on YouTube. There's no little flag on that bell to draw my interest.

    Monday edit:

    This morning I once again deactivated my Facebook account. I still fine messenger useful so I opted against completely deleting the account.

    This time it honestly feels like I have no need to reactivate it There were a couple of dead groups I was the admin of so I removed all straggling members and then myself to delete the groups. Part of my motivation to create one of these groups was to meet women. The other group born from the desire to meet people locally who played this video game I once played. Closing the groups gives me a bit of closure on those chapters of my life.

    Facebook, the platform did have its time for me. When I lacked the face to face social skills and had minimal connections with people "out there" it helped me "get out there". Today I aim to build my connections in a more pre-social media manner.
