Please stop demanding regular and bachelor's degrees for the jobs!

  1. As someone who is struggling to save up enough money to go on international travel, looking at job listings is so depressing.

Before the 2008 financial crisis started, it used to be that most people only had their high school diplomas, and university degrees were uncommon. Now the opposite is true - most people are going on to post-secondary education. It just seems odd that when I go on job boards to look at the hiring companies that most entry-level (right out of high school) jobs I see (bookkeeping, computer programming, nuclear plant operator, etc.) paying around $40k to $80k per year require either a 2 or 4-year degree. Employers are going to prefer candidates with a degree than those without, with all else being equal because it is easy to find someone with a degree nowadays. If you want to be competitive in today's market, it's worth looking at a degree.

This is one of the results of a high school diploma becoming academically and functionally meaningless. A 2 or 4-year degree is the new high school diploma.

Let's be real, earning a degree doesn't prove you are smart or get freedom.

You'd be surprised to know how much some specialized technicians with vocational training can earn, even without a degree.

As the number of people with degrees increases, their worth decreases: it's a simple supply and demand type of thing, coupled with the fact that monkey jobs are no longer needed in the developed world. When my uncle got his first job as a bank clerk with a high-school diploma in 1984, he was getting the same money (adjusted for inflation, obviously) that I got at my first job, which required a master's degree.

Then again, there is always the self-employed way, but you have to be willing to put in the time, effort and the skills.

    Wagie, Wagie, get in cagie.

Horrifying reality aside, I remember reading an ad (hopefully a fake one) for an internship with a requirement of 2 years + a bachelors degree. :emoji_upside_down:

  5. Personally i think thay the combination between: Exceptional Skills and The Degree is the best thing to have.

Also it is easy to get a degree if you are willing to do so.

I'm 27, And i Had two bachelor degrees from different fields and different universities when i was only 25.

Right now i'm about to finish my MBA.

University degrees were not uncommon in 2008.

And are you really shocked that they want accountants, programmers and NUCLEAR PLANT OPERATORS to have advanced degrees?

  7. Accounting does require a bachelor's degree. Some computer programming does, I kind of understand. Nuclear plant operating does not.

    So.........

I work myself, and to get ahead, even I need to get a masters. Go figure!?

Currently doing an online Masters in Pysch and there are students from all over the world attending.

Another issue of course is the quality of the degree you're you're getting. A lot of people (possibly myself to be included) have pretty low passes and not from the best institutions.

Just because someone has a few Msc's doesn't necessarily mean they are intelligent, or knowledgable...

Life skills and EQ are extremely important too!

    Great spiel brother. Great spiel.

Here's another, simpler way of saying it: it's all about the exchange of energy.

I was about to say something along those lines. 90 percent of people who go through college are only able to do so buy taking student loans which is another way of saying "government funded" by most likely money they just printed up from thier ass and boom right out of high school you are in debt.

Its degree inflation by literal inflation. It's so fucking gross really.

None, of those things really need degrees for, if you are willing to learn them by yourself, get to know each in 20 hours, then make some aditional learnings then apply to a job with them as requirements anyway, if they refuse, freelancing and then reapplying and tell on the interview what you do will get you a job, if they fear the competition possibilities, honestly you'll have to improvise

Totally understand you, I finished high school years ago and decided to go to university to get a degree, the course is so hard it's been now 4 years I have been into it(it's a 2,5 years course), I have lagged because I get unmotivated by knowing I have no experience in what I'm studying as I haven't had an opportunity for work, and if I do manage to finish there will be 1000 that did already too and many with better skills at it than me, I truly don't know what to do, it's like I'm in the end of a road.

What a degree does is it shows an employer that you have self-discipline, persistence, can think critically and can take on-board critical feedback. I went back to school and for me to graduate I need those skills. It's been a learning experience and at times quite painful. I don't think you realise how hard studying for a degree is until you do one, I know I sure didn't.

Having said that I don't think everyone can go to university. For some, it's a financial issue and for some, they don't possess the skill that is required for university. So there should be work and career options for those who don't go. I would add that you don't need to go to university to get those skills but they are properly put to test when you do study. I, of course, am talking about my own experience at my university. I have no idea what it's like to study elsewhere.

I guess you can't switch degrees now? I did that. Originally I was doing creative writing and English literature but switch to religion. If you can't switch be creative when you think about your future. Figure out the transferable skills you are gaining from your course. Also, try not to focus too much on the future and try to enjoy what you're doing now. We should plan for the future and take steps to make it the best it can be, but don't get so caught up in the future that we don't enjoy today.

Here in Brazil, it has become so easy and so cheap to get a college degree that even department stores are requiring a college degree to the simplest jobs, like a cashier or a salesperson.

College is the new high school, just deal with it.
