I started this journey on June 1st. I’m on day 112 and over most of the withdrawal symptoms, but now I want to start working on my mind and body. I sit at a desk Monday through Friday and want to do something physical after work and on the weekends. I’ve heard good things about yoga and wanted to ask the group their thoughts.
    Thanks in advance.

I start each day with a fairly brief (half hour max) yoga session.
    Yoga is great for:
    Posture
    Flexibility
    Balance
    Stress
    Mental focus/mental health
    Injury recovery

It is not so good for:
Weight loss (although improved posture helps a lot)
    Muscle growth and strength.

A morning yoga practice is good if like me you like to start each day rather gently with a stretch at home in comfort. I find it gives me a boost of energy and i finish it ready to face the day.

It really helped me with the chronic neck and back pain I got from a car crash and daily desk-sitting. And you can do it even if your not that fit but still have a lot of the benefits an intense workout would give you.

I am alternating yoga and using a stationary bike every other night. I’ve tried some beginner yoga exercises that I found online and I’m enjoying it so far.
I’m only doing 30 minutes a night, but it’s a start. After three nights I’ve noticed I’m sleeping better and I have a bit more energy during the day.
    I appreciate the comments.

  5. First of all, congratulations on cracking 100 days. That is a gigantic accomplishment. Second of all, you have 15 years of life experience on me so I would be grateful for any wisdom you have to dispense on the subjection of women, relationships, family, and children. Don't know if you have a family and kids or not, but I know you've thought about it at the very least because we all have.

In regards to your question, yoga makes me feel better about myself and it is great place to meet women. The whole Buddhist thing goes over well with that crowd so its a natural fit for me. Also, as a fellow office jockey I can attest to the fact that it works wonders to compensate for sitting all day. I am not a "yoga guy" by any means as I spend just about as much time in the gym and playing guitar as I do in the yoga studio, but its a skill I enjoy that helps me control my body and my mind. My only regret is that I didn't make it a habit back in my 20s when I first started going to classes off and on. Somehow I thought smoking pot, playing videos games, and looking at porn was a better way to use my time. Man on man was I wrong about that.

Thank you for the kind words. I am also using the Yoga with Adrienne videos on YouTube and find them perfect for a 53 year old novice such as myself. I was never very athletic in my younger days aside from biking, playing racquetball and disc golf with my work buddies. After being on my feet for the last 36 years, I took a desk job last November and I want to do yoga for the exercise as well as the NoFap benefits.
No kids in my life. Been married twice - the first was too young too soon, the second I came to find out too late that she wanted my income more than me.
I am currently in a long distance relationship with a beautiful lady halfway around the world and due to Covid-19 we haven’t seen each other since September 2019. Unfortunately that’s when the PMO addiction really started. I gave it up on June 1st and am trying to stay clean. My Dad had a long stay in the hospital and passed on July 27th, so taking care of Mom and going to work uses most of my time.
It’s easy to lose yourself on your phone or laptop, but you cannot use it to escape life. It’s too easy of a way out. Choose what you want for yourself, set a goal, and stay busy. You can achieve it.
    Thanks for listening.

Yoga with adriene is a great way to start. Start one the 30 days yoga challenges that she posts each January (dont wait til the new year though, start today!), all free on YouTube. I seem to remember Yoga Camp being my favourite. But they are all fine and suitable for a complete beginner.
There are some short guided meditations there too, if you want to give it a go.

  8. What i can say for Yoga is that its magical . You cannot someone else beleive the benefits you've had after doing for certain period of time.
The pranayamas(the breathing part of yoga) is the most beneficial.

  9. I know I'm going to sound like a conspiracy theorist right now, but everything I'm about to say is completely true. Yoga is, first and foremost, a spiritual practice.

The poses you do in yoga have a deep spiritual meaning, to worship and honor false gods. Now, whether or not you're okay with that is up to you, but it's important to be informed that what you are doing with your body isn't just some kind of physical stretch to strengthen your muscles or improve your flexibility or something. The entire purpose of the poses is worship. Which, again, is up to you how you feel about that, but I'm just paying along the information.

I'm not here to argue or try to convince anyone not to do yoga, but I think it's important to really know what it is you're getting involved in. Here's some more info if anyone is interested.

I do the Total-Body Refresh Flow on Nike Training. The reason I started doing it was that I wanted to do a workout from home that was challenging but wasn't so noisy. It's definitely more challenging than all the quiet workouts on the app.

Yoga is different from idol worship

  12. No, it's not. You don't know enough about what yoga is if you think that. But I'm not going to argue with you about it. Do some research. Yoga isn't what the western world thinks it is. It is a spiritual practice of worship to false gods. That's just literally what it is. If you aren't aware of that, idk what to tell you except to learn more about it then. That's all I'm going to say.

  14. I have done extensive research on this subject. It's not misinformation. You can disagree with me all you want, but the facts are what they are. People can look into it for themselves. I'm not going to argue about it. Have a good day.

There's a YouTube channel called ManFlow that's a guy named Dean who leads yoga workouts specifically designed for men and men's issues (sexual performance, testosterone, etc). I've been doing one of his workouts on my off days from weight lifting and it's kicking my butt. Less than 15 minutes in the morning and I'm breaking a sweat. It's a 180-degree different type of workout than weights and to be honest I dread yoga mornings more than weight mornings cuz they're so damn hard and in fact, if I'm too sore from the day before I sometimes have to wait a day in between to recover. But it is definitely helping my core strength, flexibility and balance and seems to be pumping some extra life into the down-there region too which at my age is a major bonus.

As far as the spiritual stuff, I acknowledge and respect the concerns some have about that but with this guy anyway, there's no woo-woo at all. He's completely secular.

  17. Of course if you ask someone really into it they'll tell you a lot of yoga today isn't authentic anyway. At a certain point it just becomes physical exercise, the body moving and stretching in some ways does just that - it stretches those muscles. I was trying to remember the name of DDP yoga just now and found a video where he straight up says "don't call it yoga." I've only ever been to one class where the teacher was serious enough to not just use the sanskrit names of the moves but expect you to know what they are, and that guy doesn't even teach open classes anymore because they want to focus on people who are serious and have some foundation.

In practice, it becomes whether anyone thinks people stretching and doing a bit of exercises derived from yoga while listening to New Age music is a threat.

Yoga is good. I have a few beginner/intermediate flows I use regularly. I have a herniated disk in my back and that shit can make the difference between a good day or bad day.

I’ve taken a few classes. Fringe benefit: Target-rich environment if you’re looking to meet some ladies.

To the last point above, true, but also can be triggering. For the same reason, for straight guys who are in recovery, watching YouTube vids led by women might not be a good idea cause yoga chicks can be really hot. I limit myself to clips led by a guy for that reason. But to each his own.

I've started yoga. I'm 64. I was getting so stiff in my joints. I like short classes. 10 minutes. So I might do 3 X 10 minutes a day. I follow Yoga With Joelle on YouTube.
