Feel free to share your thoughts, reactions, and views. It's always good to share views, hear others opinions, and look deeper into an idea.

I quite enjoyed this video and got a lot out of it. I in many ways would say that I have an addiction to my computer, the internet, and time wasting. I can go hours on end, watching videos, surfing the web, and not advancing my life in any way.

This video is only further enforcing my expanding understanding of addiction. It is so incredibly important for me to cultivate and environment were I am honest, supported, and have the means to connect with people.

What I need isn't willpower in every waking moment of the day, I need to be around people, doing things I love, and making an impact out in the world.

    I need more connection.

Yes! Absolutely a TEDTalk to bookmark. Just watched this yesterday for the second time and I couldn't agree more with Mr. Hari. The more that I spend time with others, create meaningful experiences, and create replacement habits, the more hope I have and the less I have to turn back to PMO or even MO.

Its a great video and explains why the connection we have with each other on this website works better than going it alone...

On a similar note, I'd recommend 'Memoirs of an Addicted Brain' by Marc Lewis. The author is a neuroscientist, but also a former drug addict of extreme proportions. It's a memoir, but it goes deeply into the neuroscience of addiction. Although he claims the brain's plasticity is not so great that the pathways riven into it by addictive processes can be abolished entirely, the forging of new neural circuits via positive life affirming activities is eventually what leads him out of the darkness. The scientific descriptions are really very good, and he does discuss behavioural addiction too. He disagrees entirely with the disease model of addiction, so for him the distinction between behavioural and substance addictions is not really relevant. Indeed, he demonstrates how the brain functionality of these addictions have many of the same properties, even if activated in different ways by different drugs. He has another book about addiction that is not a memoir called "The Biology of Desire", but i haven't read that one. Memoirs of an Addicted Brain is available online pretty easily if you are sneaky...

I can connect to this video. I started PMO at the age of 20 or 21 because I was alone.I used to be a pretty popular guy in school.I had lots of friends and there was no time for PMO. Life was good but then I made the worst mistake of my life and I was left all alone. All of my friends were busy with college or job and I have no one to hang out with.
Well as they say an empty mind is a devil's workshop.I started looking at porn and started masturbating and in no time I was an addict.

I think you're missing the message he's trying to tell here. I don't think he's suggesting that connection is the only thing that addicts need, but it's vitally important to recovery. Also, I think he's right that people who have full lives with a network of people that love and support them, are not going to become addicts. When we're truly fulfilled, we aren't looking for something to help us feel better, get through that loneliness/emptiness.
