I'm a Swedish guy living permanently in Norway, with my wife and two young kids.
I've been struggling with pornography for a long time, and after sorting out a lot of issues in my life, I realized that I'm addicted to porn. Now it's time to fix that too.
My wife knows about it, but has been quite patient. I'm doing this as much for her sake as for my own.
After watching a few videos, I realized that boredom is probably a big part of my pattern. I've been running for many years to avoid feeling, and this was one of the activities I used to do it.
It's destructive and in the long run it could ruin my marriage.
I deserve better, and my wife deserves all of me.
    So - here we go!
    One day done!

Can you be more specific, please?

Yeah, I guess that was kind of wide...
But it was partly meant to be.
I'm on my first week, and I'm expecting things to get harder further on. I've tried quitting by myself before and I know habits and impulses will get harder to dodge.
My strategy so far is to have options to go to, instead of sitting there "not looking at porn". I'm creating a bank of more useful activities that I can run to, like sending a text to someone, getting up and walking, etcetera.
I'm also in therapy for other things I've had to work through. (Bullying and mommy issues...) This has shown me that I have a lot of escapism in my life. I'm getting better at being myself, and becoming more of a human being, and less of a human doing... Porn has been a part of this.
I need to remind myself to think long term. A small reward now or a bigger one later. I'll never get a good car if I keep buying bicycles every time I get some cash...
Basically what I'm after is things that can tend to have me blindsided, and that it's useful to be aware of, and tips on how to handle them. For example: I have already noticed that the habit of porn comes knocking when I'm reminded of a scene or a theme, and that will probably be a bigger challenge later on, when abstinence kicks in with greater force. How do you deal with that?
I hope I'm not too vague, still. (I could make a list of questions, but I enjoy the dialogue.)

    Good insights here.

Well, I think part of the answer has to do with the force of habit; and as you change your habits, this will change.

But to go deeper, I think it has to do with being very aware and thoughtful about your actions and choices, rather than being on "auto-pilot."

So, yes, a memory of something can trigger arousal (I assume that's what you mean) and a desire to go look at porn.

Here's where having a really rock-solid resolve to begin with, helps. Also, this is where having a plan for how you will use your time, and use the internet, helps -- you stick to your plan. Third, you have a plan for how to ride out the temptations; you'll find that they come like waves; if you stay still, and don't react, a lot of the time the wave passes.

So I guess my answer is that you develop a plan for your recovery. As it happens, the link below this comment talks about that, if you want to go look. Other people here have also laid out how they worked up their plans. If you look around, you'll see what I mean.

    Is this helpful?
