The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent - 4/5

Omg, I loved this movie. It was so much more than I expected it to be. Not just hilarious, but also heartwarming and a really great story of friendship between two men who connect in a way they haven't with anyone else before. That kind of friendship is so special, and I LOVE to see a good friendship story about two grown men, with a lot of emotional depth. We need more of that in the world.

I also felt like I related a lot to Nick Cage's character, with his somewhat obscure interests and finding someone who shares those interests and finally being able to just let loose and be himself without judgement. And to get to rant about movies for hours with someone who not only tolerates it, but is just as excited about it as he is. That kind of friendship doesn't come around every day.

Really great movie overall. The only reason I give 4 stars instead of 5 is because I was personally bothered by the excessive F-bombs that weren't necessary and a lot of uses of "Jesus Christ" as a curse word, which again, I find unnecessary and offensive. Obviously that's subjective, but hey, it's my personal opinion, so of course it's subjective. It just rips me out of the story a lot when people keeping using my Savior's name as a swear word over and over, so it makes it difficult to enjoy fully. But other than that, everything was great.

 

Been watching a bunch of Marvel movies this weekend. All 5/5 stars. Age of Ultron (one of my favorites), Ant Man, Captain America: Civil War, and just watched Black Widow for the first time. Loved it! I love Florence Pugh and David Harbour. It was great.

 

Moving on to Spiderman: Homecoming. Sad to say I've gotta give it like... a 3/5 maybe. It's a bummer, because Spiderman has always been one of my favorite superheroes. But I'm really not a fan of this new iteration of the character. I like Tom Holland a lot, but the movie itself is kind of meh and I really, really can't stand MJ. I'm not at all a fan of that kind of rude "I'm too cool for all of you" attitude. I don't see how it's attractive at all. So I'm bummed to know she's the ongoing love interest of this version of Spiderman. It's a bummer.

 

This week we watched Black Panther, Ant Man and the Wasp, Thor: Ragnarok, and Avengers: Infinity War.

Black Panther isn't really my favorite, but the rest are all great. Ragnarok and Infinity War, especially. Watching Infinity War again is bittersweet. It's the first time I've watched again since I saw Endgame.

I'm excited for the next one, because Endgame I think is possibly my favorite Marvel movie. Or one of them, at least. And then after that, we move on to a bunch of stuff neither me nor my husband have seen yet. We kind of didn't watch Marvel for a bit, so we haven't seen the last two Spidermans, Wanda Vision, any of the other shows or movies that have come out since then. So that'll be fun!

 

Avengers: Endgame - 3000/10

I just have to rave for a second about how much I freaking love this movie. There were lots of criticisms of so many things when it first came out, so it was nice to watch it again and just be able to enjoy it fully without all the naysayers ruining things.

I'm going to put my rant in a spoiler section, in case anyone still hasn't seen it or something. And because it might be rather long.

I loved pretty much everything about this movie. First of all, I LOVE a heist. Any kind of heist really. And time travel as well. So a time heist is just automatically a super fun premise for me.

It was really fun to watch this after having watched all of the other Marvel movies relatively recently (I think we started this re-watch last spring). There were a lot of little special things I hadn't noticed the first time around. Like connections between characters that I hadn't remembered were important. For instance, toward the end, Clint and Wanda had a little moment where they were talking about their shared loss of their loved ones, and the first time I watched this, I didn't remember that they have a pretty special connection. Clint was pretty much the one who made Wanda an Avenger. He encouraged her to keep fighting, and told her "if you go back out there, you're an Avenger now." I forgot that they had a significant relationship.

Next, Captain America. I remember some people being upset or having the audacity to call him selfish for leaving the Avengers in the end. But I think that is supremely stupid. Steve has dedicated his entire life to serving and sacrificing for others. He never did anything for himself, and one of his dearest friends, who just died in battle, had just been teaching him the lesson that he needs to live his life. So he did just that. And I think it's absolutely wonderful. He's always been one of my very favorite characters, and I love that he finally got to have his time and his moment to just be happy.

But I think the storyline I loved the most in this movie was Thor's. I adored this storyline. We so rarely get to see examples of men going through such a difficult, emotional journey of dealing with depression and failure. And it was so perfectly done, in my opinion. I loved when he went back to Asgard and talked to his mother, and he called his hammer back and he was so happy to find that he was still worthy of wielding it. That was such a beautiful moment. He didn't have to go get sober, work out, get back in shape, go to therapy and fix all of his problems, etc, in order to be worthy. He was still worthy, even in his lowest moments, because his heart was still good.

When I first saw this movie, I was a bit bummed about Thor giving up the throne in the end, because tbh, I'm not a huge fan of Valkerie. But this time around, I actually really loved that for him. He's living out what his mother said, about being himself, not who he is "supposed" to be. And honestly, it never really seemed like Thor was that passionate about being a king. He was passionate about doing the right thing and protecting people, etc, but specifically being the king didn't really seem to be his lifelong dream or anything. So I felt really happy for him that by the end of the film, he wasn't just brought right back to where he was before, in terms of physical and emotional health and back on the throne. He grew a lot through all of this, and he changed, and he's in a better spot now. That's just amazing character development.

I also really loved the moment where Bruce tells the Sorceress Supreme that Dr. Strange gave Thanos the time stone. She just instantly knew that if he did that, he must have had a reason, and she must be wrong. As a Christian, that just hit me as a beautiful picture of the kind of faith we should have in God. Even if what He says sounds insane, we should be humble enough to know that He knows better than us and that the only option here is that WE are wrong, not Him. That kind of faith is really beautiful to me. As well as being a person worthy of it, like Dr. Strange was for her.

I can't even get started on all of the great lines in this film. There are way too many to count. Some hilarious, others profound and heartfelt. But one moment stuck out to me, as a writer, as such fantastic writing. When we first see Clint in Tokyo, killing bad guys, and the bad guy asks him why he's doing this to them because "we didn't do anything to you, he says this: "You survived. Half the world didn't. They got Thanos. You get me." That line right there told us everything about why Clint is where he is, and how he got there in the past five years, and yet it didn't feel like exposition, because it was snappy enough to believably be something he might actually say to a bad guy in a moment like that. I was quite taken by that line. That's the kind of seamless writing that most of us don't notice or appreciate unless it's done poorly. That's what writing is often like. Your goal, as the author, is to be unnoticed, because if people are noticing you, it means you're probably doing something wrong. The really good stuff should feel seamless.

So yeah, overall, I can't even express how much I love this movie. Perhaps aside from seeing Breaking Dawn Part 2 at a midnight showing when I was a teenager, seeing Endgame for the first time in theaters was the greatest cinematic experience of my life. I wonder if anything else will ever compare. It still holds up so strongly. They set out to accomplish so much, and they just blew it all out of the park at every turn.

 

They explained reasons in the movie why they couldn't change the past. But personally, I don't really care about the reasons. I feel like this made for a more interesting story, especially moving forward, than just undoing all the bad stuff. It's more interesting, to me, to see characters move past the hardships in their life, not just have them erased. We don't get that option in reality, so I find that hard to relate to.

 

Got the seats for the IMAX version of Top Gun: Maverick on Saturday evening. Currently sitting at 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Count me the fuck in!

 

I stopped watching The Fast and The Furious after the 5th one, and it has been like the Call of Duty of cinema.

 

Have anybody seen The Black Phone or Thor 4?

 

My brother saw Thor 4. I asked him about it, he said it was trash. He really did not like that one.

Btw the last movie I saw was Spirited Away (2001), which I really enjoyed. It was a 9/10 experience for me.
