Well, only one thing can really answer that for you. Are you faithful? Do you consider yourself to be Christian?

It's no secret that in many 12-step groups, faith plays a vital role in the recovery process. It's not exclusive to Christians, and there are even Atheists who can find different avenues to express those sorts of techniques. I read Russell Brand's book on addiction, and one of the anecdotes in it was based on several people who replaced the religious part of their programs with something of a deeper understanding / loyalty to the higher versions of themselves. There's something to be said for a higher responsibility, so to speak.

Personally, I'd say that reading it could help. But it depends on the 'why.' If someone wanted God to fix this for them, they may be disappointed. They'll still have to put all the same effort in, and the urges will still come and there will still be good days and bad days.

  3. Here is a Christians perspective, reading the Bible can strengthen your relationship with God which can give you a healthy outlook but that alone won’t stop you from seeking sexual release. It’s a natural biological urge. If it’s porn it can become a skewed addiction driven urge. God helps those who help themselves. My top tools in the toolbox are these:

    1. Total internet blockage through passwords set up my friend/family. No ability to look anything up.

    2. A habit of meditation to relax your mind and help you be mindful of your own stress levels

    3. Exercise and outdoors time to help you connect with nature and your body in a healthy way.

    4. Bible reading and prayer to strengthen the moral aspects of abstaining from porn and understand why the work you’re putting in is important to your growth.

    5. A solid sleep/wake bedtime routine including possibly making access to masturbation more difficult by tying string on shorts etc. this one was one of my biggest challenges since I would wank off while half asleep.

the one tool that everyone seems to have trouble implementing is internet blocking. This one is controversial since many will say you must develop the ability to handle it. So be it but I am still not fully able to do so and for now, I am very happy that I don’t have access to porn and images or videos of women and I am able to focus on building good habits

    Here's an atheist's perspective … yes.

The Bible is a book that you need to think about, it's not an easy read. It's also about how to live a moral life. Both of these will help to turn you away from porn.

  5. Next time you want to use PMO, try praying.

    Tell God you need help.

Tuscarora Rover makes a great point, God's only gonna help you if you actually put in the effort to resist temptation.

I have found that the length of time that I'm able to abstain is higher when I'm praying and/or reading scripture consistently, but I haven't been able to go the distance yet because I keep forgetting that it's not a substitute for exercising willpower; I think it will complement your efforts, but it shouldn't be used as a crutch, hope that helps!

What wise insight Kropo. I fully agree.

And for the OP: Imagine how helpful the book can be if an atheist understands how it can help. (and I don't mean that "atheist" means "dumb", I mean that an atheist might typically spurn the Bible. So Kropo's opinion should be taken very seriously, I feel.)

To read--AND UNDERSTAND--the whole Bible (that is, both old and new testaments and why they tie together) will absolutely help you.

But as Kropo says, it's not an easy task. This isn't like watching a movie trailer or peeking at Cliff's Notes.

Best effort (intellectually, spiritually, physically) I ever made.
