  1. As someone who has always dreamed of visiting Tokyo since I was in middle school because of my love for video games, anime, and music, and now I don't see myself visiting Japan because of how expensive it costs. The quality of life is seemingly better than in the USA, and those Japanese films feel different (Drive My Car, Battle Royale, and the Godzilla series). Foods & drinks look amazing and Japan has some of the best architecture in the world (look for the video that is called "Why is Tokyo is Insanely Well Designed" on Youtube).

If not, please watch it here:

About the healthcare system in Japan, I do not know but I would like to see how it works.

Japan has also invented some series/franchises in gaming like Megaman, Resident Evil, Metroid, Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania, and Klonoa.

Also, there are two overlooked islands that are known as Cat Island (one full of cats) and Rabbit Island (one full of rabbits), and they are some of the popular destinations in Japan.

FUN FACT: Osamu Tezuka invented anime, a leading figure in modern manga, the dense, novelistic Japanese comic book style that contributed greatly to the aesthetic of anime. Anime is not considered as cartoon these Americans are calling it, and anime is far different from "cartoon."

Here is a video of Tokyo at night in the rain and wow, it's so relaxing.

It amazes me that Tokyo is known for its high technology, unique architecture, and food quality, all of which the USA (mainly North America) has severely lacked. The infrastructure in Japan is seemingly superior to the USA as well.

I believe Japanese healthcare is in the world's top 5. I remember looking through a list and they were highly ranked. Their technology and culture mixes Western and Eastern together so you have a unique style.

On a more negative note, it's quite a sexually liberal country. Prostitution is legal and the Japanese aren't that bothered by it. Some of the porn that's readily available in the country is illegal in many countries. Politically it's quite nationalist. While they welcome tourists they don't like foreigners to become citizens.

If people want to visit Japan they need to remember that their cultural assets are differnet than the western ones. If people that want to go to Japan just because they got a distorted opinion of it thanks to anime and other things, they will be deluded. They will pay their ignorance with severe punishment like being completly hanilated by the japanese ''way of living''
Firstly even if their collective spirit has been sterylized by us Americans their society is still deeply rooted in their traditions. You will see everywhere, when you cross the road or when you have to eat. Isn't like to us. The cultural shock immediatly kick out the weaks, those that had a distorted opinion of Japan, that go in Japan with happines tears and then run away like cowards.
About me, i don't have any claim except to see Mt.Fuji and bike a bit trought the islands like Hokkaido, if i will ever visit Japan i mean.

As Fantasia said, the Japanese are very culturally different from the west. Centuries of isolation and then pushback against attempts at Western intervention has given them a culture that might seem very alien to a foreigner. You might want to look at how they are under the superficial things like their cartoons or videogames, because it's not as nice as you might think in a lot of ways. The bureaucracy is so invasive it makes the DMV look like Disneyland and they have an incredibly strange and toxic work culture. The infrastructure is also not as good as people say it is - it's great in the cities, but the areas outside of those are often 50+ years behind. Japan is a country of anachronisms and contradictions to say the least.

I now remember an Australian friend of mine moved over there to work and he hated it. The work culture was tough for him to adjust to. He's a hard worker but he was shocked by the work culture over there. In around 6 months he ended up moving back to Australia. He planned to live over there for a few years but just couldn't do it. Some people say the work culture over there is toxic and I've come across news stories about workers being worked to death.

  7. Japanese companies (some of them anyway) are mandated by the government to give their employees the evening off every fourth Friday of the month. Employees are even compensated with "Premium Friday" bonuses so they can afford to go out for the evening.

Sort of helps, but the urge to work is so ingrained in the culture and psyche that looks more like a Band-Aid than actual needed surgery.

My friend worked in a school. I don't know how he was affected by this. All I know is on Facebook he kept talking about how tough it was and wanted to find another job.

  9. Then again, this was five years ago, so I don't know the current policy on karoshi

I had the opportunity to visit Japan in 2017! The technology, the crazy fashion, the respect toward others especially elders, the food, the temples… The culture in general… I love it all.

But I also wouldn’t want to live there. Japan isn’t some fantasy land with no issues. If you think the West has institutionalised racism, then you haven’t gone to Japan. I hear it’s better the past few years, but it was hard for foreigners to even open a bank account in Japan, or to get official hanko. Stores can (and do) prevent foreigners from going into them. I remember one store banning roundeyes from coming in.

Good infrastructure makes sense, as they’re a wealthy country that’s densely populated—the latter is something that the USA isn’t outside of a few metro areas. As for healthcare… well, it’s the USA that is quite radical for not having a basic net. It’s a norm elsewhere in the first world.

Not gonna lie, I actually love the hyper demanding workaholism of japanese culture, also the concept of honne and tatemae, albeit can be a bit toxic sometimes, it ensures a more cohesive society and interaction among strangers.

Have you actually tried living in that work culture though? If not, you might not be able to understand how hard it is.

  14. I'd highly recommend you check out Virtual Japan's Youtube channel. I was on his livestream, (dance festival) a week ago and it was so chill to watch! Of course, it's free to be on his livestream online but the stream he filmed is exclusive and you will have to pay and access his membership. Not forcing you to pay but still, his channel is unique and chilling.
