How to enjoy movies/shows since most of them have triggers in it?

Discussion in 'Rebooting - Porn Addiction Recovery' started by Everthing_will_be_alright, Jun 5, 2023.

  1. It's hard for me to simply watch any movies or shows, as there may be potential triggers. I usually try to analyze a movie by checking its age rating before watching it, but even then, the movie may have triggers, such as explicit dance songs. What can I do?

For this, I would say your best option is to focus more on avoiding screen media.

The second tier option is being a lot more restrictive in what you watch, and deploying liberal use of the skip forward button without going back

You'll already have plenty of opportunities to exercise your eye muscles (read: refusing to look even when it's right there). If I see what I suspect is a pretty woman while I'm driving, I simply don't allow myself to check. I pick literally anything else to look at until the opportunity is gone.

It's very unnatural, but it's what you have to do. Anyway why tire yourself out with that when you're presumably trying to relax?

  3. Basically, I'm trying to limit my exposure to screen media as much as possible. Nowadays, explicit content has become normalized, unlike a few decades ago. To counter this, I'm practicing 'eye bounce,' where I quickly avert my gaze if I come across something triggering. However, there are times when we forget our game plans in the midst of watching something triggering. Therefore, I believe it's important to always stick to our game plan and remain committed to our goal of limiting screen media.

  4. IMDb and Google search are really helpful in identifying potential triggers in movies. However, it's no longer as simple as watching any movies we wish without consideration. We now have to invest time and energy into analyzing movies and shows before deciding to watch them. It's also a good idea to opt for content like sports or National Geographic, where there is likely to be less triggering content, as a safer alternative.

  5. Explicit dance songs? You can't be serious...

My advice would be to expand your horizons. Not all movies have sexual themes.

  6. Some movie scenes, such as explicit dance songs, may not be triggering for some individuals, but they can certainly be problematic for people who are recovering from addiction. These explicit dance songs, often found in Indian movies, are strategically placed to attract adult audiences and boost movie sales. While the overall plot of these movies is typically not explicit, the inclusion of such songs can detract from the quality of otherwise good films. There are numerous Indian movies that follow this trend. Despite being rated 13+, in my opinion, these songs are not suitable for viewers of that age group. If you have some familiarity with Bollywood movies, you can easily understand this issue.

I totally understand your concern about triggers in movies and shows. It can be challenging, but there are some strategies that might help. Firstly, you're on the right track by checking the age rating. Additionally, you can read reviews or summaries to get a better idea of the content before watching. Some streaming platforms also allow content filtering, which can help you avoid explicit scenes.
If you're looking for alternative entertainment options, you can explore this guide on how to watch FuboTV in Mexico: https://onlinetvcast.com/guides/how-to-watch-fubotv-in-mexico. It might provide you with a range of content choices that are less likely to have triggers.

I either use IMDB or commonsensemedia to research anything I watch on TV/Movies. It shows you sexual and adult content and you can make a decision from there. Obviously if a movie has a LOT of sexual content then try to stay clear if possible. Some websites even tell you when the sexual content is so you can fast forward that part or look away (a bit risky though)
