Has anyone ever successfully quit video games and seen a marked improvement in their lives?

I've realised I use them as a bit of chewing gum for my eyes and fingers but soon get bored. Yet I always stick something on as soon as I get home as a default. I'm not even playing them anymore - I'm just putting them on.

I don't buy hundreds of games - in fact in 2015 I bought only Arkham Knight, FIFA 16 and Assassins Creed Syndicate, before that GTA etc. But none of them I can be bothered to play to the end. The storylines are linear, contrived and predictable. The acting is always weak and they have no nutritional value for my mind or my soul. Yet I still run around these sandbox worlds achieving nothing much in the game and even less in real life. I find them visually impressive as works of art, but they have little excitement when compared to other things I've done in life like getting on stage to perform music or getting to know a girl. Those experiences are unique. Within the first day of release of a video game, someone (if not hundreds of people) somewhere has already finished it. Nothing I can achieve is unique.

My addiction to Football management simulations pretty much ruined my higher education. Is it just me living in a comfort zone I no longer even respect or enjoy to avoid doing anything genuinely challenging? I'm 36 now. Is it time to chuck away the controllers and get living?

  2. I like video games. It's never been an addiction for me. I grew up with Nintendo as a kid and still love the company. It is honestly just a harmless hobby. Of course, like with everything, it needs to be in moderation.

However, if you're talking about an addiction, then consider how much time you're spending on games. If you can't manage the time, then yeah, you'll have to be done with it. Video games can be a great stimulation of the mind.
I've never understand why some people on this site link gaming to PMO... It's not about the video games itself, it's about the person. Video games are harmless. It Is no different than sitting down watching TV (not that I watch TV anyway). If someone said they watched 9 hours of TV a day, then of course, it would be a problem, just like it would be if someone spent that amount of time playing games or surfing the net. If it's in moderation, it's fine.

Gaming is something I'll never give up. For me, it is just a harmless, fun thing to do in my leisure time. I don't even play games on a daily basis.
The longer my streaks get on NoFap, the less I find myself playing video games anyway, because my soul opens to other things, and the benefits of semen retention starts to kick in. I start living life better and become interested in other things, but gaming will always be a fun thing to do on the side, just like anything else that's fun.

I actually quit Team Fortress 2 a long time ago. And, I noticed some improvements in my life. I was more social, got to bed a little earlier, my anger issues diminished. But, you know I still love the game.

I actually re-downloaded it again back in December of last year, I didn't take the game as seriously as anymore, I was more chatty on the mic, and chat. And I never found the need to constantly play it 24/7.

Now, I can't again because one of my laptop broke. And it got its repair, but they done a shitty job. The screen broke off the frame again.

But yeah, videogames are good in moderation. And there are actually some benefits to it as well.

Such as faster reaction time, and able to point out tricky questions, or mind games, etc.

  4. Team Fortress 2. One of my favourite games of all time and so many good memories with it.

I quit gaming entirely, ever since then my life hasn't improved dramatically. I have noticed that I am more sensitized to regular everyday life, like if I watch a horror movie I am more likely to scream, or if I watch killing or something I am more likely to cringe, aside from that maybe little things like I talk to people more often.

The problem with gaming is that its incredibly weak in terms of actual content and substance. I know some of you may wish to say "I only do it when I'm bored" or something, but even then instead of playing GTA you could read a book (and learn something hopefully), you could do some exercise, you could just talk to people man. Videogames (and music) are both forms of entertainment that should be enjoyed sparingly, they offer almost nothing for what you put into them.

This is all coming from someone who was once passionate about music, and intended to become a video game developer, mind you.

Yeah, I love the fan-made music they make. Like "Erecting a River" and "Mortal Kombonk".

And to be honest, Team Fortress 2 has actually raised my self-esteem. It was so fun.

  7. I agree somewhat with what you said for the most part, but have to strongly disagree about the music part. Music and games are two entirely different spectrums altogether. Music is something that transcends deep and wide and connects with the soul on indescribable deep levels. It allows you to experience and feel emotions like nothing else can. I'm really not sure what you're talking about, and this is the first time I've ever heard someone degrade music so much, whether in person or online.

Oh and if you want to play games that do more good for you than others, well I would say a mixture between strategy and RPG is where its at. Both genres offer really fun (yet challenging) forms of gameplay.

My favorite was probably Left 4 Dead, really made me better at communication, plus was extremely addicting.

I both agree and disagree. I've been a singer in a band and the highs it's given me on stage far exceed anything I've experienced in my career, by watching films, reading books or, dare I say it, having sex. I wanted to be like my heroes.

But when it comes to listening to those heroes... I literally never listen to music without imagining it's me as the lead singer performing that song (male or female). If I listen to the words of The Smiths I know that I'm hearing poetry that far outstrips any modern writers.

However I can agree that at times I'm escaping into a fantasy whereby I'm getting my fix of glory, adrenalin etc. just by pretending it's my music. I'm quite a self indulgent person! If I didn't have these fake highs would I go out and achieve genuine things myself?

There is a lot of sexualization in music videos and lyrics. Sometimes, they can be triggering so I would try escaping it.

When I finish with my reboot, I could probably handle it. But even that you don't have to listen to it.

Most sexual music lyrics are usually pointless and shitty made. I like A$SAP Rocky, though.

Oh, and I'm not anti-masturbation, or anti-sex. I just want to watch myself, and not wreck up my reboot. :)

  12. I write songs, I'm discovering new bands all the time and I listen to a huge variety of genres. I'm not talking about modern day garbage like Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga. I'm talking about actual music.

A lot of music I've listened has changed my life, and certain feelings I've only felt through music, whether it be the way the instruments are played, or by being able to identify with the lyrics themselves.
That's the thing, I'm not self indulgent, so maybe there's the distinction. I listen to the art for what it is. Bands who sing from the heart, like Radiohead, Snow Patrol, Interpol, At the-Drive In and other great bands such as Bloc Party and older ones like Smashing Pumpkins etc... All have brought something great to my life.

I'm completely confused with what you mean by fake highs. I actually feel naturally high listening to a lot of these bands. I'm a writer and filmmaker and still create my own art, however. Music to me feels like energy, not just sound.

Same here, life would be so dull without music. I possibly wouldn't be able to live without it.

  14. The bands I listen to don't have over sexualised music videos or lyrics.

And this my friends, is the very reason I don't care for it.

I know of plenty of people that literally cannot go without music for more than a day. They can't eat, sleep, have sex, use the bathroom, watch movies, etc. without having music in the background. Why is this a problem? Because, for the very same reason porn and other forms of artificial stimulants can be. It takes away from natural stimuli, or in other words it is more difficult to make it through reality without that unreal source helping you through it.

Humanity has existed with (relative) ease without music. Most of the species on the planet probably rarely if at all ever hear anything outside of their natural environment. I'm not suggesting music (or games or porn or whatever) is bad, but what I am saying is that it is completely unnecessary, and in some ways just takes away from the world in which we live upon. Not to mention the growing epidemic of people who are expected to become deaf out of overly loud music.

Because I always pretend it's me. I have made my own music which has been compared to some of those bands you mention. But half the time I wander the streets ignoring the world with my headphones on listening to other people's music stuck in this fantasy. If I'm at a train station, for example, I'll have an intro tape song playing as I descend the stairs and then change the track and launch into my opening number as I reach the platform itself. The platform is now my stage.

    If I wasn't stuck in this way of consuming music I might;

    a) be socialising with real humans
    b) be writing music and forming a new band so that I can experience those highs again for real
    c) stop being that weirdo patrolling the platform mouthing lyrics and playing air guitar

Well, I am not obsessed over it. I just like to listened to it once in a while. When I'm angry, metal bands usually help calm me down.

Plus, I am not addicted to do it.

  18. Fair enough, but you're more so talking about issues that effect you on a personal level. Not everyone feels about music or treats it this way.

I love music, but I still do all of the things that you mentioned in your bullet points. Playing a video game or listening to music doesn't have to stop me from doing that.

You're talking about an extreme case. I'm not. I'm talking about a normal healthy, happy human being who appreciates music as art and doesn't necessarily revolve their whole world around it. Also, to call music unnecessary is utterly illogical and irrational. Music is someone expressing their actual soul and their gift. You're actually saying that someones actual essence is unnecessary. We are made to create, to be ourselves. That is all a person is doing by making music, which is also the same reason someone makes a film. It's art, it's self expression...... Can't you see that? It's like saying Stephen Spielberg making films is unnecessary, even though his movies have had effects on many peoples hearts on a universal scale. What about Schindlers list?

It's the same with music, it touches peoples hearts and makes people cry and connects with people like nothing else does. Please wake up. Your comments are coming off as extremely narrow minded.

that wasn't really directed at you in particular, I have just heard those very same words iterated hundreds of times before by different people.
