Sky, an internet service provider (ISP) in the UK, beginning from next year will make a porn filter on by default for all new users, as you can read in this article. The users will be able to disable the filter in their user control panel, so the filter is opt-out as opposed to opt-in.

I'm interested what is your opinion on this issue. I know that some of you use K9 or similar tools to block porn sites in your reboots. Do you support blocking all porn by the ISP by default?

Personally, I'm strongly against such measures. Obviously, I think think porn can be harmful and making it harder for people to view it can save some from addiction. However, my reasons for opposing this measure are completely unrelated to my views on porn itself. The problem I have with the filter is the matter of privacy and misuse of the opt-out information. By opting out you basically admit to watching porn - this information alone can be stigmatizing if leaked out. Plus, police may be interested in the list of those who opted out of the filter, for example when there is a rapist in the neighborhood. But most of all, I fear that this may in time lead to blocking other kinds of content, ultimately resulting in creation of a handy list of people who opt to choose to view certain types of websites.

In short, I think ISPs enabling users to block porn is a great idea, but only as an opt-in option, never as an opt-out.

I'm really interested in what you guys think.

I have to agree with your reasoning. Even though porn is bad, or should still be up to you if you choose to watch it or not. If i purchase internet access,i want no restrictions on what i can and can't view.

I'm also against them blocking porn as a default option.

I don't think that porn is helpful for anyone. In fact, it might be downright damaging to every person who comes in contact with it. That said, people should have the ability to make that choice for themselves. In some way, they will still be able to make that choice, but I agree with @jatar... The blocking should be opt-in.

One one hand it's still a form of censorship which I am generally against. On the other hand, parents may often simply don't care about what they child is doing on the Internet so it may be of some use. But after all I think that everyone must come to the conclusion themselves, filtering porn may bring about opposite effects and only increase curiosty among the young. I think we all agree that after we experienced ourselves how it is to be dependent on porn, we ended up stronger and wiser.
