If you have ever taken a sociology class or psychology class, gender is actually something that is created by culture. Our culture has many genders or "acknowledges" them. Gender itself doesn't really exist and is entirely made up by the culture. Pre-Colonial Native Americans acknowledged a third gender in their culture, etc. etc. So to answer your question yes....and no....

 

Sex is what's down below, gender's what's in your head. There are three main sexes: male, female and intersex. Gender, however, is a fluid concept and isn't necessarily tied to anatomy.
