The New Habit Challenge

  1. Good luck, @iHappy - you can do it, friend!

    I didn't check in yesterday, here's how things stand as of last night:

    Meditation - 1/21 (reset at 33)
    Exercise - 36/41
    Self-improvement - 03/21
    Walking - 40/42
    No news - 0/21 (reset yesterday)
    Water - 0/21 (starts today)
    Say Something Welsh - 0/21 (starts today)

    I'm doing another Darebee challenge, a 30 day water drinking one, and as there's nothing wrong with having more things to cheer about I will record that here too. The challenge is to drink 8 glasses of water a day.

    EDIT: For a long time I've wanted to learn Welsh. It's my mother's first language and that whole side of my family speak it - it's an important part of my identity and I only know a few words and phrases! Well, no time like the present! There's a good online course called Say Something Welsh and I'm going to do one of their lessons a day.

    NoSugar Rules for Today (Tuesday, 9 August 2016)

    GOAL ~ Today, I promise to not eat any lollies, cakes, ice creams or chocolate, or drink any soft drink.

    Below is a series of If > Then plans for how I will implement this goal today.
    If I have an urge to eat sugary foods or drink sugary drinks...
    Then BY THE POWER OF THE OLD GODS AND THE NEW I WILL NOT ACT ON THIS URGE

    0/21 Candy + Ice Cream
    Ok, I',m gonna give up eating candy and ice cream for 21 days! Thank you! I sooooo needed this challenge!
    A bit of background; I've been porn free for 36 days now, still have sex with my girlfriend (however infrequently), and masturbated after 30 days (just felt necessary). Actually quitting porn seemed relatively easy for me.
    This candy and ice cream habit or addiction (I read that sugar is addictive just like cocaine), of mine happens because I live next to a Rite Aid in Brooklyn and they have these damn buy-one-get-one-free deals which I just can't seem to pass up, I mean like Haggen Dasz ice cream buy one get one, it's ridiculous, my hands start shaking when I see the little cardboard sign, Caramel Cone and Pineapple/Coconut are my favs. And then in the checkout line they've got all this amazing candy, again buy one get one, or 2 for a dollar, oh shit, I ended up buying a 'sharing' pack of peanut m&m's AND a four-pack of Reese's White Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups. Anyway, obviously this is a big problem for me and has been for awhile, years. I'm not fat, in fact I'm 6'6" tall and 180 pounds, and I ride my bike and run on an outdoor track, but all this to just keep up, always fighting this budding tummy, I know I have abs under there but they're buried under a 1-1/2" layer of candy/ice-cream induced cushion, believe me a bulging belly on an otherwise tall/thin guy is not very appealing, and I know it's not good for my health. I even wrote on my fridge, to start buying apples and yogurt, and I love protein bars as much as candy bars, but still this damn Rite Aid situation, that's it, maybe Rite Aid is the problem, maybe I need to stop going to Rite Aid for 21 days, that's it, Rite Aid is my problem, fuckin' Rite Aid!

  9. Holy shit it looks like SBeard's masterpiece thread is the last thread in the top 3 best of all time.

    Crushing PMO out of your life forever is essentially a matter of forming new, good habits.

    That's all it takes really. Unless you have reached the depraved addict stage of addiction. Even then you need new habits along with healing your mind, spirit, and body over a long period of time to recover fully.

    Update:
    • Fruit habit - not sure how long it has been but I have succeeded in introducing and maintaining a habit of eating more fruits daily. To the list of regular customers, I have added apples, naranjas, strawberries, Mexican papaya, mangoes, watermelon, pina, and kiwi.
    • Mindful driving - I succeeded in being more mindful while driving for at least one month, but I failed to develop any new habits and have essentially relapsed back into territory where I drive somewhat faster than I should (thankfully I live in a big city so am just one of a larger pack).
    • Computer programming - adding this as a new habit as I have procrastinated on learning more algorithms and other computer science related topics for a couple of years now. This is more a placeholder for a plan than anything.
    • Spanish Study - Now this is a multi-faceted and deeply ingrained habit. I can see extending my studies for a full two year to achieve full fluency.
    • Training - establishing a daily habit of doing stairs with a 60 lb pack rather than my usual 40 lb pack. With a vacation coming up this has been pretty easy to remember (vacation will be mountain hiking/climbing).
    • Squatting - decent habit developed doing this twice weekly but I still have to goad myself into a tad bit so the noose isn't quite tight enough yet.
    Related to PMO, the new habits sometimes crowd out PMO but not always. Depends on the weekend it seems.

    0/21 - Sitting straight.

    Most of my stuff are just small minor bad habits i'd like to stop because to be honest, they're just annoying and i'm probably gonna feel a bit better not living with them. That's why I decided to write them as well. I'm guessing it will take some time getting used to the idea of not doing them, but i'll try my best.
