Hmmmmm...after reading that I think I will pass. Sounds like a good message but not sure if I could handle and overlook all the sex scenes enough to appreciate the message. For me it looks like it might be too triggering.

I saw that one and really liked it. I watched it with my wife about a year ago after 6-8 months of sobriety or so. It really opened a door for some good conversation. She had a number of insightful questions like "Is that really what it feels like for you as an addict?" There were some sex scenes that I averted my eyes for so as not to trigger me but it didn't go overboard so wasn't too distracting to do that.

  7. Regardless of what some people might choose to believe, I am definitely NOT using this as an excuse to watch something sexual. I do have a brain and I am using it wisely, thank you very much.

I can't stand that you can flat out say "no, that's not why I'm watching it," and everyone will just say that you're lying to yourself. I can see my intentions in this situation very clearly, and you're wrong. End of story. Move along.

Another note: I wasn't exactly asking about this movie because of the sexual stuff. I know there's going to be some sexual stuff. I was asking if the message was clear and good and if it's worth watching, despite the sexuality.

  8. Sorry about the rant, but honestly, that kind of implication makes me so angry because it boils us down to addicts and addicts only. In other words, I'm such a hopeless addict that I can't possibly have any other reason to want to watch a movie than getting to see something sexual. That's just ridiculous. Don Jon is about so much more than that, and I want to support the making of films that shed light on the dangers of porn.

And also, I'm a grown woman who has Internet access and a whole lot of free time. If I wanted to "get away with" watching something sexual, I would just do it. I wouldn't come on a forum and ask for everyone's opinions and then watch some steamy movie with my mother.

I've seen the movie as well. This is quite a number of years ago though. In terms of content as I remember I don't think there was any actual nudity.

I remember some time after watching it, I spoke to one of my friends about the movie and the main character's porn addiction. This was before I knew about NoFap (I was not trying to quit P at the time), but the movie may have helped to put the idea in my head that giving up P is a good idea.

A movie that I felt handled P addiction well is "Men, Women & Children" (again this movie is filled with triggers so I wouldn't recommend people watching it, especially if early into their reboot). There were 3 things that I stood out to me as being portrayed pretty realistically.

    1. The father in the film is trying to PMO and his own computer is so filled with malware and viruses his is unable to use it. The father ends up using his son's computer and looks at the browsing history. Initially the browsing history is more tame but as the father continues to scroll through it reveals things that someone who watched a lot of P would search for.
    2. The son in the movie is heavily addicted to PMO and develops PIED.
    3. The PMO addicted son exchanges text messages (sexting) with a girl and is disappointed that she doesn't respond to his messages like a P star would.

  10. Thanks for all the other suggestions guys! I love thought provoking, ground breaking films like that. Good to know they're being made.

ehh I wouldn't go so far to call Don Jon groundbreaking. The concept of abstinence from PMO isn't new.

One of my favorite films that broached the subject was 40 days and 40 nights.

If anyone can stomach watching a film with Josh Hartnett, it's worth a view.

There's also a rough scene in the end that I dont want to spoil, but it's nothing depicted graphically, just a strong trigger.

  12. There may have been some in the past, but I don't think any of them has been as popular and widely talked about as Don Jon, mostly because of JGL's passion and how well spoken he is. And because it was his project as a whole, he created a lot of conversation and hype about it.
