Are internet filters a good tool in fighting this addiction or are they a false sense of security? Have they worked for you guys in nofap? Fortunately I haven't watched porn in five months. I want internet but I'm concerned whether I have the strength to resist temptation.

  2. Personally I think internet filters can help us but not in the long run
I use Filter on my android because my phone is the best media to look for porn resources.
If you are the type of person who can't control temptations (like me :D ) then using internet filter is highly recommended. by the way I use SpinBrowser on my android. it blocks porn websites and forces google to always use safe search.
but internet filters cant help much if you are under heavy temtations because well... you can disable it by yourself.

in conclusion internet filters are recommended :)

They are data harvesters under the cover of something "good"
Spying on your searches even if they are innocent searches.

Thanks for the tips. I can see filters helping if you have some type of accountability such as a person activate the filter with a password and only they can turn it off.

You can always get around them if want to. Wish I could Block it before it gets in my house.

I deleted Twitter since I was spending hours on Twitter looking at porn.

Porn filters are the equivalent of padlocking your fridge when you're on a diet...

Just stay away from that damn cake.

There is a lot of garbage on social media which is the main reason I stay off of it. A filter wont block social media material.

  9. Filters work great when you're learning how to resist temptation. They're not a long-term permanent fix, because you will still eventually need to learn how to be strong enough to fight on your own without that crutch, but they really do help in the early going.

Yeah like everyone else have said here, filters work. They are really helpful, what I used is called Requestly. I don't bother searching for porn, because when I search and click on a porn link it redirects me to Nofap. So yeah I encourage you to use filters, but remember that in the end, you will have to lean to resist the urges. Set your goal, and stick to it, that's the only way.

Like how exactly? I thought they were the complete opposite: a form of admitting that you have no willpower and need to be controlled by self-imposed blocking scripts.

  12. What's wrong with admitting that we DON'T have any willpower? Acknowledging that is a huge step to recovery. If you can't resist looking at porn, filters remove the temptation for you and you can start building your own strength. They're nothing more than training wheels, but I'd sure like to see someone that learned to ride a bike without them.

In my experience filters help, but should not be relied upon. So for instance I put filters on my devices, got urges and then started using other peoples devices to access PMO material; sister, mother, college computers, work etc. This put me in risky situations. The filter is needed in my mind, not the computer...

I have never used filtering software. Many times I just white knuckle it when it comes to avoiding porn. I can see filters as a last line of defense if everything else fails. It is like a knife as a secondary weapon. You should never rely on a knife in a gun battle. You are only going to use that knife when you run out of ammo.

I'm perplexed by this question. Not using any filter myself because I didn't want my victory over my own impulses to be tarnished by artificial under-exposure. But that's just me.

But the argument being made in favor of the filters that help us create a foundation for our willpower and slowly build on that while exposure increases makes sense theoretically.

One question though, the filters suppose a controlled environment, which by definition is limited to places we have authority on - what happens when the fridge is padlocked but we need to go outside the house?

Ive never used any filters. I think that the main idea is that you need to build up your stamina to resist. I don't see the point in putting some block on your device that you yourself can disable. I agree with you 100%

Ive been fighting this addiction for over 20 years and Filters save my life.. to each its own, but in my experiance ive found there are times i fall back into old habits when i have no resistive brain power to stop me.. and its a simple thing of a filter or compleatly destroying my life, relationships, health, work, career and sanity, id rather have some protection than total relapse insanity that can last weeks and months.. my major triggers are being really tired, being fired from a job, being screamed at by a female or boss. When my mom got cancer.. any tramatic event.. breakups.. all can send me back when my defenses are down and im spun out.

Nothing wrong with taking precations and storing up for a rainy day. Life happens and at times my ass gets kicked by the real world and i get spun out. Ive learned the hard way better to have stuff in place ahead of time for when that happens.

Just think if superman had kryptonite in his pocked all day long. It would weaken him.. why not lock it up in a protective box. Now he is free.

Ask yourself this: If you are a porn addict and it has affected your life so bad that you had to seek help and come to this website, why would you carry porn in your pocket all day amd have it at just arms lengh 24/7 ? Just get rid of it and any access to it..

Do you think recovering crack heads keep crack in their pocked all day? No.. Do recovering Alcaholics keep a bottle with them all day? No. Why keep access to porn with you all day?

I’m right there with you! Filters also protect the people we love (children, grandchildren, etc) from seeking porn on our devices.

they helped from not being able to go for a week regularly and struggling for years to have this 300+ days streak, but remember to keep them tight (make a hard password with no recovery option by having a secondry email you made just for this with again a hard password and keeping those passwords you cant memorize like 20 unrelated characters on a piece of paper and keep them in places you cant have access like in house of a friend)
i wrote about it in 70 tips topic read #2, link in my signature .
