I wondered if porn had a place in his problems too. But then I watched his video (look it up, it's still out there, I saw it on dailymail news website. I think the guy was just a straight-on clinical psychopath. He had a sense of entitlement, seemed like a real dick. In the vid, he even said "How can they date those boys and not me? I'm am the perfect male. The perfect alpha male." He even had his evil laugh down everytime he would talk about himself and how perfect he was.

Mentally disturbed for sure, but I don't think porn drove him to this path.

There was a very, very similar thing that happened a few years ago. Some guy went to an aerobics place and shot up a bunch of chicks. And he left a myspace diary and said almost the same exact things. He talked about how he was in good shape because he went to gym every day, handsome, smelled pristine, was a perfect specimen, yet women wouldn't date him and he was a virgin. He was in his 30's or 40's, but same exact attitude. It was all over the news then too, but I'm too lazy to find links.

I can see how porn could lead someone down this path, but these two examples probably fall into the realm of psychopath--no real sympathy for anyone and extreme narcissism.

    Just my opinion tho...

Can we say FOR SURE that he watched porn? With respect, all of us on this web site have got porn on the brain. We think about porn and masturbation daily, in the sense that we are trying to overcome our addiction. It is not surprising that if there is a news item featuring a guy that felt that it was unfair that girls didn't want to have sex with him, we assume he watched porn. Like most young men, he may have, but not necessarily.

Evidently, he was taken out of one school after another as a child because he was severely bullied. He was also diagnosed with a developmental (not mental health) disorder called Asperger's Syndrome. As a result, he was simply unable to integrate socially. He experienced intense distress at many areas in his life he often broke down crying in front of others. He clearly had mental health issues (e.g. grandiosity and extreme entitlement and punishment schemas). He was more than unusually addicted to violent computer games throughout his teens and legally owned several firearms. I am sure there were many other factors. Porn? Maybe, but not necessarily.

What happened was traumatic and tragic for those caught up in his rampage (although he ended up killing only 2 women in the end). The pain visited upon their families and that community is unquantifiable. In addition, his own family will be agonising how their son/brother etc killed all those innocent people. Moreover, it incredibly sad that this emotionally unstable man did not receive the help he needed to come to terms with his pathological, maladjusted perspective. Apparently, he had multiple therapists and a social worker (that reported him to the police because of the risk he posed the previous week). The whole thing just makes me so sad.

    Yeah interesting.
Rodgers was not a typical guy, but I think that porn is definitely linked to extreme narcissism. You have all these girls out there who seem to be performing on demand for you in a virtual, fantasy world. It's pretty flattering.

But enter the real world and, wow, girls arent just mindless sex slaves for you; they have personalities, emotions and intelligence. And worst of all, they know how to say "no". They want a connection and relationship - which requires emotional intelligence, hard work, some level of sacrifice of your own good for her good.

Porn doesnt train us in any of this. It just says that women are sex products to be sexually consumed. And seeing a really sick guy like Rodgers, who felt that being denied sex was an "injustice", it just seems to have a porn mentality written all over it - which he originally turned to for comfort after being wounded by his parent's divorce (I did the same), being mixed race etc.

It's such a crazy story. These victims died for absolutely nothing. But the media play up the mental health and gun angles (which are important) while really neglecting that mainstreaming porn has led to a generation of young men who are lonely, frustrated, feel cheated that the real-world is nothing like the porn-world and are often really, really angry about it.

Sorry not read all the comments but apparently he also has autism- more specifically aspergers syndrome (??) which can massively intensify feelings of isolation in an individual and can also make people have particularly strong fixations. I have also met somebody with aspergers who was massively influenced by that slick but ultimately dangerous TV series 'Dexter' whose main character clearly has aspergers and the writers have flaunted with the unfortunate similarities between a psychopath and somebody with aspergers- the difference being that a psychopath is completely self centred in a manipulative way and everything/everyone is just there to be used for their own personal gain (the absolute minset of our so called 'world leaders' who constantly seek to impose their rule and have 'filtered' their 'values' down to the rest of us via their 'institutions') and the person with autism is egocentric/introverted because their condition causes them to be isolated and/or they are isolated because of their condition and so they learn to become very 'selfish' as a form of self protection in a world they dont fully understand and that makes little effort to understand them which (when completely misunderstood) can sometimes be interpreted in a negative light (understandably considering societies tendancy to ignore, dismiss and often vilify anything its 'institutions' have brainwashed them into viewing as anything less than 'normal'- which is particularly well represented in the movie Pleasantville) Also his dad was one of the directors on those illuminati fuelled Hunger Game movies which really raises an eybrow especially for anyone who has ever read Cathy Obriens 'Trance-formation of America', is aware of the way Hollywood is massively used to 'filter' down the psychopathic values of those who control it, or knows anything about MK Ultra? Just thoughts and suggestions?

I mentioned Asperger's Syndrome above and I feel that this is the single biggest indicator of Elliot Rodger's underlying problem.

And honestly I work in social care in the UK (with people with autism) and let me tell you that funding for services for people with autism, learning disabilities, physical disabilities, and mental health issues etc is being slashed dramatically whilst the wages of those who do the real frontline work (in some cases) are about 40% LESS than they were 15 years ago (to my knowledge) which is an absolute disgrace and as usual its those who are the most vulnerable who are swept under the carpet first whilst (quite literally!) the demons run amok!!

If you can (or havent already) its worth watching Ricky Gervais' Derek because he masterfully illustrates societys attitude towards its more vulnerable and the way both they and those who care for them are woefully under-valued.

We are ALL potentially vulnerable and (barring illness/early death) will all be old one day (not to mention family/friends) and so these are issues that effect all of us.

Sorry if ive gone off topic but I truly believe this is related/relevant

How interesting! I agree, very relevant. In my city we have an organization called ASpire (a support for adults with Asperger syndrome, high-functioning autism and similar social issues through mentoring and group activities). I used to work in an acute psychiatric hospital and the cutbacks in statutory and third sector services over many years is truly disgraceful. The interventions Elliot Rodger had, clearly failed to meet his needs. There is too much emphasis on crisis management and relapse prevention - maintaining an artificial status quo - rather than a proactive journey of recovery. Every aspect of this incident is utterly heartbreaking.

Yep, crisis management and keeping up appearances sound all too familiar! Very sorry state of affairs that needs to be highlighted at every given opportunity because the conseques of not giving people the care and support they need, deserve and are entitled to (!!) are nothing short of tragic (and scandalous in a so called 'civilised' society- which is just laughable all considered!)

Wow; I left this for a while... I'm glad to have sparked conversation. Thanks to whomever retitled my thread -- I probably chose the wrong one initially.

A couple of notes on a few themes I saw reading through the thread. Alas, I don't have a lot of time, so I can't point to specifics.

    1. On Pickup Artistry I understand that much solace has been found from people in the community from the Pickup Artist community. It's not a bad thing to learn and try to understand how to speak to women. However, the PUA community is closer to misogyny than most, and if you choose to interact or read them, keep in mind the sexism inherent in the project. Learn from them, but be wary. This article (and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND EVERYONE READ IT) reminds that there is a symbiosis between youthful anger about a lack of success in love, and the pickup artists, that can lead to extremism.
    2. On Mental Illness To be sure, Eliot Rodger was mentally ill. I trust the judgment of those who watched his video -- I could not. I could barely stomach the transcript, let alone looking into the eyes of someone like that.

We do need to be wary about mental illness; Millions of people are autistic, more have Aspergers who do not lash out like this. We chose mental illness to blame as it is a convenient scapegoat that requires as little self-reflection as possible in situations like this.

I am certain his illness played a part in this. I am much less certain if it played the majority part; Evil can and is done by sane people all the time.

I personally think that a key part of recovery from pornography addiction is mental engagement with feminism; Not the man-hating-parody of feminism raised as a spectre, but the true radical feminism that says only one thing WOMEN ARE HUMAN BEINGS, just like you. Start reading about feminism, and reading the stories of women. It'll hurt like all fucking hell I'll tell you -- because a lot of women have horror stories men can barely understand. Learn about objectification, and power structures; understand the way our society is built and propagated that never disabuses people like Eliot Rodger of the notion that the deserve sex when they want it.

I would suggest looking into the blog we hunted the mammoth, that exposes and debunks hateful misogyny. It's hard to read, because I didn't believe that kind of misogyny existed, nor that there were hives dedicated to it. However, I think it's educational.

Edited to add: we hunted the mammoth looks closely at the misogynistic roots of Eliot Rodgers crimes.

We need to know not just authentic feminism (cf man hating penis-envy) but authentic femininity - not the grotesque parody of it thru barbie doll porn actresses.

But more important to that task is understanding the real power of our own masculinity and how it finds it's true expression in service to others - not their domination and destruction.
Learning about our urges, unpicking our assumptions about sexuality and emotions, and harnessing our passions for good rather than being ridden by them like weak-willed, floppy jellyfish - the nofap challenge leads to really positive growth in these areas

Elliot Rodger was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome (AS) which is not a mental illness, it is a developmental disorder. I haven't seen or heard the latest information, but I am not aware of any mental health diagnosis as such. His actions last week are not symptomatic of AS. However, his problems with social interaction and thereby social isolation are rooted in AS and laid the groundwork for his outbursts and final rampage.

I stumbled across a newspaper article about the rampage at Starbucks today.
It had a quote from the president of the sorority this scum targeted. She said that her and her sisters were scared that there were more guys like this out there, citing a Facebook page glorifying what he did. http://www.independent.co.uk/life-s...-isla-vista-killer-elliot-rodger-9435875.html

I also read this this really interesting article. http://www.theguardian.com/commenti...odger-was-misogynist-killing-spree?CMP=twt_gu

The author argues that mental illness along with a lack of social skills can lead to these mysoginistic and angry attitudes and when guys like Rodgers go to women hate sites, they feel like that hate speech on those forums justify their beliefs and following actions. Which makes sense, mental illness being exposed to such hateful speech can turn deadly.

If this is why he did it, then is it possible that porn influences men to frequent such hateful sites?

I grew up autistic and I have a very difficult time comprehending social situations, it's like I just don't feel wired to socialize. My brain can do other things in ways that astonish people (and even myself) but when it comes to talking to people... I just, I don't know. When I was young the psychiatrists would always put me on one medication or another, all of which would just cause me to feel "dead." The combination of social frustration and the meds led to me feeling very, very similar to this unfortunate individual, Elliot Rodger.

I wanted to torture women, I hated them for having the keys to the pussy kingdom, and always keeping them away from me but gladly giving them to the shittiest men who would cheat on them and hurt them. I wanted to shoot up my school, I wanted to blow it up, I wanted to do a controlled demolition job on the school with all the kids in it. 9/11 style. I wanted to see blood spill as I smiled.

I slowly learned to socialize, and eventually found a wonderful girlfriend, who recently broke up with me after 4 years, and this autistic thought process with dealing with social isolation is blaming me for abandoning me on my own, leaving me to fend for myself in a very aggressive sexual, social world that's always trying to beat you down. I'm learning to look at this as an opportunity to work on my life so that it will be more suitable for a companion to join me.

I feel we live in a very fragmented society where we all feel like we just have to make it on our own without help from anybody, since day one of school they tell you to sit in your own little desk and don't talk to anybody. This leads to a tremendous amount of time in which socializing isn't practiced, and when you're autistic, it's even harder to learn those critical skills. I'm 25 and feel I've got the social skills of a shy 13 year old.

This individual was poisoned not only by a lack of guidance, lost opportunities to build real social skills early on, and wanting to be part of the hypersexual world, looking at it from outside in and feeling left out, abandoned, an outcast. He would do anything to feel power of those he felt oppressed him. So unfortunate, I feel so grateful I was able to move past the mindset that led to this man becoming a monster.

I haven't read through the entire thread so my apologies if I repeat or contradict anything that has already been said.

In his 140 page (which is actually 137 pages) 'memoir' of his life he talks of his video games a majority of the time so I feel there is an addiction to these from a very early age, in particular, WoW - World of Warcraft. In his 'memoir' he talks about his plan, his War on Women (WoW.) I feel that this is a deliberate 'play on words' due to his computer game addiction.
He writes briefly of porn and masterbation and of his first views of porn. He has an obsession with blonde women. He speaks of 'slaughtering' these 'beautiful blondes' at the sorority house.

They never formally confirmed that he was on the autism spectrum but suspected that he was.
His 'memoir' talks about his family separating and if indeed he was on the spectrum this would have been difficult for him as it involves change, he didn't like change.
Autism isn't a mental disorder but can cause problems with social interaction (as can broken families, unloving families, childhood abuse, etc.)

His video on YouTube was very disturbing (the others he posted were extremely strange also.)
He thought of himself as some type of super being, that he deserved anything he wanted, that women should worship him.
He had large conflicts in his head, from self loathing to extreme supremacy.

I think that his views on women were linked to porn/masterbation problems and the extreme narcissistic traits that can come with addictive sexual behaviours were what caused so much conflict in his head.

I feel that video game and sexual addiction may not have been the cause of his 'retribution' but it definitely played a large part.

My thoughts are with those that have lost through this tragedy.

I don't know if he was just stupid or severely mentally ill. Maybe both. But if a big issue was that he was a virgin, with his money he could have easily hired to hooker. It's so easy to get laid with a hooker if you live in a major city.

Sounds like he was maybe just a simple idiot but I'm no expert so I won't judge.

That being said, I'm not condoning prostitution as it is not for everyone and it will not be the solution for many of the problems for the people out there.

He was neither stupid, a simple idiot nor severely mentally ill. Having sex with a prostitute would not have changed anything either. You need to read the thread Waldo101.
