How to quit video games (journal)

Discussion in 'Self Improvement' started by Deleted Account, Feb 26, 2017.

  1. Nice read. Wrote about this in my journal today, coincidentally. It's my biggest addiction; the only one I've been unable to break.

  2. Yeah I think it's just a matter of getting used to boredom which is a withdrawal symptoms of overstimulation.

Good! I've seen some pro- or neutral stances on video games on here when you can argue they have a far worse mind numbing effect on you than PMO.

Spend a few hours playing games and you'll probably find it difficult to do even a simple task; just imagine how that translates into years of playing video games. Your brain no longer needs to work to receive its dopamine rush - the ability to concentrate atrophies due to lack of use.

The good news is it's easier, at least in my opinion, to quit; most people don't really care for video games once they hit college age and after a week or so you forget about any urges and move on with your life.

Video games are bad because you dont use your brain which can literally shrink your brain. Same thing as watching TV. I used to be a full on addict all my life fromvideo games. I quit when my 113 day reboot started (april 2016)

  5. Yo so it has been 2 days so far and it was great this evening. I took a walk, did some cooking and work in my kitchen, also did 10 minutes of meditation, three things I don't usually do. I also did my homework on my own without being lazy and just copying a friend which is what I usually do. I am really finding simple tasks and things which aren't overstimulating interesting finally. I am generally feeling more happy. If you have not seen these two youtube videos then I highly recommend you watch them since they helped me out a lot:

  6. Yeah they really do mess with your brain! Quitting allows you to become way more in you h with yourself too.

If you're watching TV, your brain does almost nothing, right. But if you're playing video game, your APM will raise, there's no way you can raise your APM when you don't use your brain a lot more.
And I think video game addiction is a mix between dopamine and endorphin addiction. So quitting it is a much harder than P.
To get rid of it, you must change your life style completely.

I would say it is more psychological then Dopamine. Porn is the most pleasurable thing you can give yourself naturally and nothing beats that.
For example in a game i keep on working to get better and better and higher level and i cant quit doing it. I'm addiction to the game, there's no dopamine or endorphins involved especially to be comparable to PMO.

What the fuck is a APM??

It's just my theory though. But when you play video game, it means you like it. And dopamine release whenever you do something you "like". The same for endorphin cause it release when you "focus".
Now about the "high" level between PMO and video game, PMO bring a lot more intense dopamine rush than normal video game. But, with some people, when they beat a super hard game like Dark Soul, finished a speed run with a new world record or build a whole damn huge city in Mince craft <= I belive that will give them a "high" time just pretty close to PMO. Somehow their brain train themselves to that kind of pleasure.

    APM= Action Per Minute.
Look at your fingers when you playgame, the faster they move, the higher APM you get.

  13. That's a bit of an absurd argument don't you think. Apologies if it was pure sarcasm.

There's different between doing something and getting addicted to it. We have to stop PMO cause we have PMO addiction. The same for eating and exercising if you overdose it.

  15. I thought quitting video games would be hard for me.... It's been about a month so far with minimal urges, but there was kind of a specific thing I did.

I was playing Fallout 4 about 16 hours a day and was very attached to all the characters in it. I watched some videos about video-game addiction and I realised that my 'enjoyment' within the game felt more like OCD, than actual happiness. That, 'just one more resource raid' mentality as I built up towns etc consumed me.

When I considered quitting, I tried to imagine what the characters in those games would say to the real me if they could about me quitting. I already knew the endings I was going to pick for them, as i'd already played through before, so in my seventh or eighth playthrough, I already knew what was going to happen to them.

More importantly though, I imagined they had told me that I had done enough, that they would handle things from where they were, that it was time I helped myself and started my own adventure. I doubt the characters I grew to love and know would have wanted for me to hold myself prisoner in a story where I had already predetermined a happy ending for them.

For a moment, I guess i imagined myself as one of those minor minievent NPC's who you sometimes encountered in game who couldn't help themselves? I always showed them compassion I guess, because I wasn't much different...

Quitting PMO is the next step, to boost confidence, energy and motivation!
