"The Pain Body" This is a concept fron "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle. It's a spiritual concept thay may shine some light upon your addiction.

So if spiritual talk is bad medicine for you, now is the time to spit it out. For those willing to read about their pain bodies, let's jump in.

Tolle, along with many other schools of spiritual thought, says that we have an eternal self; this is the observer, the unchanging, and the real YOU. now you also have an ego, a false self. This is a concept that you have bought into over the years about who you are. This includes concepts of your personal limitations. According to spiritual doctrine, it is not bad to have an ego because it is a tool, useful to getting things done in life but NOT intended as a reference of identification. This is our big mistake and the purpose of meditation... detatchment.

Now the nasty part: An ego, when believed in as self, clammers for further attention. It will do ANYTHING to have you believe in it more and more. When it does this, it is refered to as "the pain body" as it actively seeks suffering for you. The more you suffer, the more you tumble around the world with "poor me" on your lips. The pain body just LOVES addiction because it has you chasing a momentary high and then drops you into self rejection, self pity, shame, and even physical illness. By these means does the pain body get your unwavering attention.

Essentially the pain body acts like a demon who is hell bent on ruining your life. It drinks your suffering and pisses it's pants laughing everytime you fall into a relapse. It's the voice of the pain body that whispers in your ear "sure you can look at tinder... it doesn't count... what do those fapstronaughts know anyway?... just one little fap... look at the ass of that bitch, man I'd fucking do that... it's just the way I am... I cant help it..."

The pain body is only effective if you think it's you.

    Read that again.

The pain body can only fuck with you, if you think that its voice... is YOUR voice.

So then we can learn some simple meditation exercises. Tolle teaches just sitting and being aware of your body: the heat, the weight, the tensions, your breathing etc. Every time the mind starts yapping, you just take your attention back to the sensation of the body. Eventually the pain body, starts to sound like what it is... a voice from somwhere else.

It isn't you. That same bastard who tells you to get drunk, to smoke, to be a smartass to a cop, to not bother doing exercise and to fap your whole life away, will FOR SURE tell you that meditation is a waste of time. It's rather like Dracula telling you that you shouldn't buy a crucifix.

Hey … thank you for sharing this , it is very well timed.

I’ve been struggling for the last few days !

I’ve only recently found Eckhart Tolle and have been watching a lot of his clips on youtube …

I was meditating but I let the habit slip and I know that lead to my recent relapse ….

    Again thanks for sharing

Good post. I find meditation not for me but I have substituted it for wim hof method with cold showers. It's more practical to me. Horses for courses.

The pain body is absolutely real. Sometimes my mind drifts and I’ll just start thinking crappy thoughts about a girlfriend who screwed me over a long time ago. After reading that book, I now know it’s just the pain body expressing itself. When I catch it, I now consciously realize that that’s all it is, and I’m able to get back to regular thought again.

  7. I read some of Tolle's books, especially "the power of now". The whole concept of the pain body really resonated with me. Interesting how the pain body can lie dormant and suddenly be awakened by a stressful or upsetting event in our lives. Back when I was a heavy drinker I would experience the pain body after a drinking binge.

I keep hoping that the pain body will just move out... as if it were an annoying neighbor or something. What it tends to do is this though: It says “I’m off. Bye!” And then it goes outside and pretends to walk off... and then it ducks behind a bush (so to speak) and waits for its moment to come springing back into your life.

At least my pain body, who is best of buddies with my addiction, has a decent sense of humor. It waited for me to think “Hey, this is easy... I’m cured of my addiction” and then dropped me into a total relapse that crushed my body and should for three years.

    Well... THIS TIME I’m cured.
