The 10,000 hour rule

I was just doing a wee spot of daydreaming when I thought about this. Many people have heard about the 10,000 hour rule presented in the book "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell. For those who don't know, the 10,000 hour rule is presented as an approximate formula for success. It says if you spend 10,000 hours learning how to do something, you'll come out world class. The book gives examples of musicians, businessmen, athletes, writers, and so on that have probably spent 10,000 hours honing their abilities and are now recognised as being amongst the best in the world, and indeed, of all time. Now, 10,000 hours is a lot. That's 20 hours a week for 10 years. An impossibly high amount of work, right?

That's what I thought. Then I wondered... How much time have I spent on PMO? Well, lets see. I'm nearly 27, and I've been PMOing since I was 13. That's 14 years. In that time, I didn't PMO every day. But some days I PMO'd several times. And sometimes I've had PMO sessions stretching to three, four or five hours. Most of my PMO sessions were over an hour, many of them around two hours, even on weeknights. Taking that all into account, I figure I can safely say I've averaged two hours a day somehow dedicated to PMO. Yes, that's a lot of time. Let's do the math:

    14 years x 365 days/year x 2 hours/day = 10,220 hours

    Bingo.

Can you believe it? I've spent 10,000 hours in my life on PMO. I didn't think I'd spent 10,000 hours on anything! After all, who has that kind of time? But here I am, and yes, I've spent 10,000 hours on something. On PMO. Does that make me a world class PMO vet? I guess so.

But that's hardly a badge of honour. I look at that, and I see 10,000 hours LOST. 10,000 hours I could have spent on useful things.

    Think of it:
If I had spent all my PMO time playing guitar, I could be a world class guitarist, travelling the world playing gigs.
If I had spent all my PMO time writing, I could be a published novelist with a dozen titles to my name.
If I had spent all my PMO practicing footy, or running, or swimming, I could be an Olympic athlete.
Hey, even if I had spent all my PMO time WORKING as a wage slave, I'd have enough money to buy a house.

But here I am. And I'm not any of those things. I don't have any of those things. Because I spent my 10,000 hours in front of a computer screen, jacking off. What. A. Waste. My opportunity to be great, down the toilet - quite literally.

Now, I'm sure if I hadn't had PMO, I wouldn't have spent all 10,000 hours on the same thing. I would have spent them on a bit of this, a bit of that, probably a bit of television and such mixed in. But that's not the point. The point is just how much time I've frittered away in my life doing something that brings me no benefit, and in fact harms me.

What a wake-up call. All I can worry about now is not wasting the next 10,000 hours the same way.

    How about you?

If I had spent all my time PMO'ing practicing my French horn, I'd be soooooo much better than I am now. There are horn players who are as good as I am, but they're years younger than me. I would like to join their ranks.

I guess I am pretty advanced in surfing the web using my left hand only, even though I'm right handed. Hooray for me. /:

    To Erboinq:

Great thread man, I love calculations and analyzing things like this. >_> If I would have taken the time to learn web design through all the time I had PMOed since 9 years old, I would have been a web designer of caliber by now.

This really hit me... I desperately need to improve my time management.

I love this post. When I PMO'd, one of my biggest frustrations was the sense of time spent that had just been completely wasted. It was a hopeless feeling. I'm glad someone brought Eric Thomas up, he is extremely motivating for anyone interested in getting to their 10,000 hour mark in something besides PMO. Using his speeches as motivation I improved my GPA to a perfect 4.0 for 4 semesters and got accepted into the honors program at my university. They are not for the faint of heart though.

I like this post, most of my pmo session last for more than 2 hours. They usually last the whole night. Kind of starting at 8pm and only going to bed at 4am next day. I think I could have been a rocket scientist, brilliant guitarist, a major league star, and better than Lionel Messi. But hey, I still have more days to live. Need to make the best of them

  14. Wow thanks for this thread guys, extremely interesting. I knew about the 10000 hours rule, fortunately I only had two years of addiction so I didn't spent that much time but I certainly regret having wasted two years now. Especially since it's funny how depression is linked to PMO, at least for me. Besides I realized that just like PMO, gaming is escaping reality and these things basically go together, and shit I wasted a hell lot of time in Skyrim and Hyrule.

I definitely could have work on several things and be better on it, like guitar or computer science or just drawing since it's the way I chose to ""earn my life"", but I like to see it the other way.

Maybe, quitting was the thing that made me realize I had the power to control my life. Maybe, if I never had been addicted, I never would have the "traumatic" experience that made me realize what I really want the most in life, and to tear down this smoke veil that prevented me to face my biggest fears. Therefore, being addicted made me stronger. I don't believe I would have one day been as good as I am now (knowing that I'm still very low and have huge mountains to climb to be better) if I never had been addicted.

So I don't think regret is the best thing to do. Instead of saying "what could I have done instead of fucking myself all these years?", why not ask yourself "what can I do NOW THAT I'M FREE?". Because if you do have quit, then you have all the time in the world! And obviously it's the most precious stuff to have. Because with time you can have anything you want. Don't look at the past, look at the bright future.

The way you presented this Abel just blew my mind, I never thought that way, I'm totally gonna use this right now, thanks bro!!! And the video was so perfect.

I do agree that successful people don't count, but for some reasons I can't pinpoint it doesn't sound perfectly true to me. Maybe because sometimes being spontaneous makes you successful (after all I started NoFap completely spontaneously), but most of the time having a plan makes you MORE successful. Anticipating, which is kinda like counting, etc, this makes you more successful. Agh, I know I don't talk well about it, but I feel like there is a dichotomy here.

This thread, and Eric Thomas' speech, make me think of an article I've read on a minimalist blog a while ago: when you want to be a billionaire, you don't really want to be a billionaire. You don't want the money, you want the things you can buy with it. Maybe it's the reason why we're not that successful. Because earning MONEY is not as appealing as earning the stuff you can buy with money.

Anyway, here comes at a time when talking about success doesn't makes you as successful as working towards it, so I'm off to draw :)

Thank you for this discussion guys.

EDIT: OMG ABEL thanks for the pic, priceless.

10,000 hours of porn - thats incredible plenty of time.

about 5,000 hours for sure i invested in porn. good we can watch porn and fap (about 8,000 times in my life) like real professional. we know nearly all the faptechniques and we could easily become pornproducers.

in fact this is nothing to be proud of.

and please think about the tissue we all have spent in our lives.

  17. I know the book and whenever I read such a book, I had the same thought: These people tell us things we all know. We don't need such books, we just need to DO.

  18. ~15 years ago, I gave away about 10,000 books I had read and collected.
Man, I was feeling so lightweighted afterwards.

Too much thinking can harm your life sometimes.
