Ted Bundy the porn addict

  1. Boipucci! Some times ignorance is a blessing.

The Ted Bundy interview I remember was the one with Dr. James Dobson from Focus On The Family. He went into some detail about his porn addiction in that interview. In fact, in the middle of the interview, Dobson mentioned how the lights flickered because that was the moment the prison was testing out the electric chair that Bundy was eventually executed in.

Clearly Bundy had problems far more severe than porn ... but porn is one of the keys that accessed those problems and helped them grow into severe, criminal problems.

I think this is the primary piece of information we should take away from this debate.

In summary: Porn didn't turn Ted Bundy into a killer, but it sure assisted him on his journey. As I pointed out before, he was a highly intelligent human being. He probably knew exactly what porn was doing to him, and maybe he even actively used it as a tool to fuel his desires.

I'm sure we can all relate to "that" feeling; when you're at the peak of your dopamine high whilst locked into a porn binge and feel like you want to get off to everything and anything; things you would never think to seek out in your right mind. Luckily for us these feelings (usually) make us feel sick to our stomachs when we think back to them after the deed is done. For others though, this isn't the case...

No one's suggesting that occasionally watching a bit of rumpy pumpy turns you into a deranged serial killer with a penchant for necrophilia, so let's just knock that on the head. (no pun intended).

Porn... FOR SURE... has a negative effect on the brain. I think we can all agree on that. A healthy mind can be corrupted by it and a sick mind can be utterly perverted by it. I have seen people using this as an argument for actually banning porn. Well I wouldn't ban it. I do think that we, as a society, need to wake up to the effect of the "everything and anything goes" attitude in modern (perhaps "Post Modern" is the right word) society.

Even pop videos are enormously sexual, as are lots of adverts. In the "Gay Pride" party the other day here in Madrid, there were guys going at it in the streets like jackhammers. We need to accept that our society has gone down the path to perdition and turn around... now!

Bundy was sex crazed, and a sex obsession is more or less condoned these days. You mentioned Jack the Ripper who obviously couldn't get porn but was also sex obsessed and frequented the nasty, skanky streets of whitechapel to hunt prostitutes. I doubt his first victim was his first encounter with prostitution. But back then, sex obsession was frowned upon.

These days, our society looks back on the sexual repression of yesteryear with an arrogant scorn. Proud of our sexual license, we splatter sexual images into every corner, utterly convinced of our superiority over those old fuddy duddy types.

Rather than going back to sexual repression, we need a consciousness of consequences. Sex is POWERFUL energy that should not be played with lightly. It isn't a toy.

Jack the Ripper, Ed Gein, Bundy, Dahmer... all scumbags for sure. None of them could handle sexual energy. All of them created a sadistic fantasy world out of it. Porn strengthens the addiction to sexual fantasy and breaks the connection to reality.

So I'm not saying PORN CREATES SERIAL KILLERS. Not exactly.

CS Lewis wrote this in Mere Christianity:

When we have understood about free will, we shall see how silly it is to ask, as somebody once asked me: "Why did God make a creature of such rotten stuff that it went wrong?" The better stuff a creature is made of--the cleverer and stronger and freer it is--then the better it will be if it goes right, but also the worse it will be if it goes wrong. A cow cannot be very good or very bad; a dog can be both better and worse; a child better and worse still; an ordinary man, still more so; a man of genius, still more so; a superhuman spirit best--or worst--of all.
Basically, it shouldn't be a total surprise that someone as intelligent as Bundy turned out this way. His intelligence gave him a higher capacity for evil than the average person. You can't be diabolical without using brainpower ... which is why premeditated "1st degree" murder carries a greater penalty than 2nd degree murder.

We moderns think we are the smartest folks ever. We think our ancestors were ignorant rather than having learned lessons the hard way. We think rules are arbitrary and designed to oppress rather than having been made to avoid deep, dark misery.
