Is there a science as to how and why porn and p-subs destroys a mind from thinking creatively?

I have a passion for writing and I feel like I can't get that part of me out. Did porn possibly do something to my creativity?

I think that the problem lies with motivation.

Porn consumption hasn't done anything to your creativity. It's sapped you of the motivation to do anything. When I'm on a good streak, I find that I have more drive. I know what I have to do for the day and so I do it. After relapses I have a tendency to put things off. I don't write much these days, but the interior monologue might go something like this:
"I really ought to do some writing today. That idea I had really has some potential ... Eh, I don't know if I like it anymore ... Better to have something down on paper and then redraft it later ... I just don't feel inspired by that idea anymore. It sucks. I can write tomorrow. Maybe I'll feel more inspired then."

And so forth. I have a suspicion, and to some degree it extends to western society as a whole, that living in a constant state of satisfaction, sating our desires as soon as they arise, often going above and beyond fulfilling that desire by spiralling into a binge cycle, is turning us into a race of creatively and emotionally stagnated people. Western ideology tends to identify dissatisfaction as a problem, something that requires correcting. Demonising these feelings enforces consumerism. Feel hungry. Eat something. Feel sad. Treat yourself to that new game you wanted. I think that porn use falls into the same category. I find it ironic that this culture of satisfaction has left many of us feeling empty.

Dissatisfaction can be a good thing. It doesn't need to lead to despair. It can drive us to improve ourselves, or to do great things. Keep going with the reboot. The creative fires will start burning again soon.

PS. Sorry for going all armchair sociologist in that one paragraph. All the best!

I agree with this, but in the end, these technicalities aren't that important to focus on.

Is porn damaging your creativity, or is it damaging your motivation to create? It doesn't matter. Either way, the solution is to quit viewing porn. The result will be more creative fulfillment--whether that comes from a more vivid, active imagination, or more drive to produce artistic work.

  4. There are many articles out there about how porn addiction effects your brain. These are 2 that really helped me understand what's going on with my husband.

Creativity arises from a mind set loose. (Said one of my famous countryman writer) And by "loose", he meant (and I terribly translated) that the mind can roam free, develop in fractal figures to create the most bizarre and new patterns and ideas, assemble them, contemplate them, destroy them, slice them, shape them, distillate them and keep the nectar, the essence that will drive you to do something great with it. Or discard easily until the next idea comes up.

P isn't the only thing that can kill creativity.
Being busy all the time does too. (Your mind can't wander by itself, and dream awake)
Or connected to constant novelty/notifications. (Your mind can't go far, the last cat video needs your attention)
Or pressured with barely impossible timings. (Your mind is working hard to find solutions to make your impossible schedule add up)
Or anxious. (Your mind has all these unsovable questions it desperatly wants to answer)
Or fearful. (Your mind won't expand into anything new, it's too risky)
    Etc.

You can see that many of these things are already integrated in the PMO cycles into various dosages. Keeping PMO in our lives takes a toll on many domains of the body, and the mind. I'm not saying that no one can create while PMO-ing. I created loads for decades, and I've done an extreme amount of PMO. But I found the ressources to fuel all that needed to be done (i.e. basic life sustenance+PMO, which was what my life has been for the past 25+years) by gutting every other part of my life that needed attention/energy. Not a very bright result I'm afraid!

It's the brain fog. Will kill creativity along with motivation and many other things.

I guess so. I have been good in school and improvising sarcasm. Now I feel I can't think well, concentrate, forget a lot, and depressed.
I think it's because of directing all attention to porn and hormonal depletion.

It means your brain isn't all there. It's part of withdrawal for some guys. Could be absent mindedness lots of things.

Have you ever caught yourself in a blank stare? Like, one second you just realize you've been staring at the wall, thinking absolutely nothing for several seconds, a minute, or more?

That's kind of what brain fog feels like. It's this hazy lack of mental activity. You go through the motions of life, but you don't feel engaged. It's like you're in this low-grade trance.

It happens because of the way PMO hijacks brain chemistry. Over time, one of the effects is referred to as 'hypofrontality', where the prefrontal cortex (the part of the brain that is in charge of logic, higher-order thinking, decision making, etc) actually starts to diminish because it gets used less often. Especially with guys who compulsively PMO 2-3x a day ... they get that post-orgasmic bliss where they are mentally detached, but they stay there long-term because they never give their brains a chance to heal and get back to homeostasis.

I know the feeling well, unfortunately.

It comes from overstimulation of the reward system. When people go past sexual satiation, the consequences are severe hangover symptoms like brain fog. It feels like depression, and more severe cases make you feel even worse. Read about it on yourbrainonporn.com, the section on reward system.

Yup! And you don't even need porn for this. I got it from just jacking off too much.

In the aftermath of a binge session, I find that I'm focusing on picking up the pieces and surviving. There's no spare capacity to be creative.

How are you focusing on picking up the pieces and surviving? Curious to know why you think there's no spare capacity to be creative.

A relapse normally also means a night spent in front of a screen. So the next morning I am tired and panicking that I won't be able to cope with what the day throws at me. In that mode, there is little room for me to think beyond 'surviving' that day.

That said, those days did teach me how to prioritise things in an emergency, and how to squeeze due tasks into reduced time.
