For me personally the "darkness" that the blog talks about - isn't a selfish issue. Its more for me that simply viewing women as sexual objects and masturbating to that - rather than seeing them as people makes me feel terrible after I have ejaculated. In fact I think in my mind it can psychologically be linked to bigger issues such as exploiting people, using them as a means to an end and not as an ends to a means etc. Abstaining from PMO gives me essentially the "light" because I am happier and acting in a more morally decent way and as a result my thought process is a lot more positive, which makes me feel more pure if that makes sense...
