2 weeks of nofap!, pavlovian training & the power of compounding

    It's been 2 weeks since I faped and I'm confident I'll be able to make it to 90 days. In the last 50 days I have fapped for 7 times. I started my nofap journey in May 2021 and struggled to make it to just 7 days without Porn. But after much reading and experimenting I can say that porn is no more a problem, I've mostly struggled with masturbation. I'll share in brief my learnings during this journey:
    1. We need to make use of the basic psychological principle: 'that which is rewarded is repeated while that which is punished is avoided'. So I did a very simple thing I slapped myself hard whenever I had a raunchy thought. It really works and slapping myself actually became automatic i.e. carnal desire = slap on face but soon it became awkward and next I bought this device called Pavlok 3 Pro and using this wearable device I gave myself a shock (zap) as a punishment. So now carnal desire = zap on the wrist.

    2. Next I had a shift in mindset. The new mindset is about simply recognizing that by not faping I'm not missing on anything important. It is not a sacrifice or a temporary lifestyle change but is actually quite normal not to fap for weeks or even months. Even in the animal kingdom in case of mammals only a few alpha males get to mate with females and that too only in the mating season and for long periods they abstain from sex. Most males don't even get to mate in their entire lives. I'm not against sex or anything but the way it works in nature is that it is actually an added bonus not an integral part of life. So stop self sabotaging yourself by thinking you'll miss something very important by not fapping. Also don't watch or listen to anything which makes you think otherwise.

    3. If you're having withdrawal symptoms it is actually a good sign because neural connections in the brain have started to weaken. Don't activate them again pat yourself on the back when you experience them but don't fall for them. I'd recommend killing two birds with one stone, get into nofap not just to recover but also to improve in certain other areas of life like strength and immunity. It is well known now that nofap improves immunity and athletic performance.

    4. The real benefits of nofap happen much later. This will disappoint many but having short streaks is not going to help much. For eg., from faping a day to faping a week sounds like a seven fold improvement but actually its only a marginal improvement and most likely the benefits will be unnoticeable but with each additional day it'll get better. So say you have 30 day nofap streak and observe some benefits, most likely those benefits started appearing after 24-25 days. In short its not a linear journey but an exponential one much like return on an investment which compounds over a long time. Most of the returns are earned in the later part of the investment period.

    Really interesting to read this. I'm also thinking about buying a Pavlok. I have been experimenting with nofap for some years now and haven't reached 30+ days streaks only twice. Maybe it's time to give the zap machine a try.
