47 yr old gay guy ready to start a new chapter in my life, one with less sticky pages

  1. Hello fabulous former fappers,

I'm brand new to this site after having discovered r/nofap only yesterday. I'm feeling really inspired and touched by the stories I'm reading here.

I spend (spent) way more time looking at porn than I should- a couple hours a day - and as a result I have no dating life. I'm also procrastinating on some things that really need to get done. I'm just jacking my life away.

I've decided it has to change.

I quit smoking about 15 yrs ago after reading the amazing book The Easy Way to Stop Smoking. It completely changed the way I looked at that addiction, and put 'me' in control rather than the 'little monster' that was living inside me... that parasitic compulsion I had to do something I knew was bad for me and that I didn't want to do anymore.

I think I need to approach this challenge the same way. Just not giving any oxygen to the voice in my head that I know will be crying out for my attention. Just ignoring it until it becomes a whisper (unlike smoking I doubt it will ever be silenced altogether). And loving the fact that it's me calling the shots, no longer a slave to the urge.

I'm also really excited about all the great new things that will be happening in the wiring of my brain! I just watched The Great Porn Experiment: Gary Wilson at TED. That is some crazy shit!

I've never been part of a 'support group' before but I think it's a really lovely idea. And so inspiring to read those entries of the brave men and women who have gone before. I'm looking forward to reading more.

And so I begin this journey. Today... is day 1. (dramatic music)
