913 days of no porn

Discussion in 'Success Stories' started by Deleted Account, Nov 23, 2020.

  1. 913 days ago, I joined NoFap and stopped watching porn. I fought hard from the very beginning, started with cold showers from day one and haven't had a single hot shower since.

Today is a big day for me since I finally completed the 10%-challenge, where my goal was to stay off porn for 10% of the time I have spent watching porn. I was about 10 years old when I first started and got hooked to it right away and it last for 25 bloody years. Now that's not anything I can change so no reason feel so guilty about that. What I do control is the future and 2.5 years ago I decided it was enough.

I joined NoFap, started taking cold showers, started with the shortest challenge and as soon as I completed it I took the second shortest and so on. I meditated and started working out a lot. A few months in (about four months), I decided to do something about my sleeping habits and this was a major change for me. I have tried to fix my sleep many times before but without success. This time, I didn't set a deadline for when I was supposed to lie in my bed, instead I just put a deadline when I was supposed to close the lid on my computer. Suddenly I had found a way to be consistent with getting to bed in time and this helped me a lot with staying off porn. (see The No Screen Challenge if you're interested)

I also joined the everest group and the divine comedy challenge. My approach was to join as many challenges I could in order to get small dopamine boosts every now and then just to stay on track.

I also did a plank challenge, exercise challenge, habit changer challenge, waking up early challenge, meditation challenge, avoiding social media challenge, no sugar challenge, no coffee challenge and more. Challenging myself to quit porn encouraged me to change myself in so many other ways, to the better.

Except staying off porn, I have been staying of masturbation, orgasm, nocturnal emission and fantasies as well. For example, the first 100+ days was in PM mode. I have been doing no pm in the 60-day challenge twice. Also, I did 180 days without pmo, no nocturnal emission, no fantasies whatsoever during woken hours and no dreams about porn while asleep. What I have been working on for the last 50+ days is this goal: "No mental or physical pursuit of any sexually arousing feelings except with my wife". I think it's very neat. I can't do any PMO, no fantasies, no touching and most important of all, I cannot cheat in any way, e.g. I can't start to do other things that I would enjoy so to say.

After three months off porn, I wrote about it here: https://forum.nofap.com/index.php?threads/my-experience-after-three-months-of-no-pm.190551/

In short, what I experienced was that these months had been a tremendous change for me but at the same time, no of the old habits had faded a single bit. It just felt as I was the old me but with some added things. Nothing was removed. I speculated in why that was the case and realised I can't expect that 25 years of watching porn would just be forgotten after only three months. I thought that in order to actually notice any difference in my brain, I had to stay off porn in relation to how long I had been watching porn and so I created the 10%-challenge, were my goal got to be 913 days. Today is that day.

So how does it feel? Oh boy how good it feels! I can actually feel that the pathways in my brain have faded quite a bit! When I think about the word "porn", almost no images pops up in my head. I don't get a storm of arousing feelings in my body and I don't start to recall a dozen of exciting things I have watched. Some things are still left of course but it's way more damped now than it was 27 months ago.

So in that sense, the 10%-challenge has really worked and I'm glad I have gotten this far. There's another side of the coin unfortunately. Thinking about the no screen challenge, I have done it over and over again. Every time I have completed it, it feels really good, however, as soon as I didn't have to check in and update my counter, I started going to bed later and later. Then I just had to join it again in order to keep my routine. I'm afraid something similar could happen now when I have completed the 10%-challenge... if I don't have to stay on track and check in and update my no-porn counter all the time, will I really be keeping myself on track or am I going to slip? I don't know. As I said, when I think about porn, no storm of memories pops up but I do feel a certain interest of watching it. Like a smoker who has quit but always feel a certain attraction to have a smoke again. I don't really know what to do about this because at the same time, I don't want to stay on this forum for literally the rest of my life.

My plan was to hang around here for exactly this time and then break free. I want to become independent of this forum, sounds simpler than it is I guess! The fact is, I really like doing all kinds of challenges here and it encourages me to stay on track and stay healthy. So in a sense, I feel cured but in another sense, I'm not ready to leave yet. I guess I will hang around for some time, however, now I allow myself to continue on without this forum whenever I want.

At last, this forum has really helped me to get back my life and I am so happy I finally took the step. I am so happy for all the help I have gotten from this forum and a big thank you to all members who keep this forum alive! At last, a really big thank you to @Alexander for creating this forum!

    Hey man,

Congratulations on your 10% challenge! That seems to me as a massive success, and you can be proud of that!

I understand your wish to break free from this forum and think you will do so when you are ready. Untill then, enjoy the challenges, set new goals for improving your life in new ways, and share your wisdom with the rest of us :)

    Thanks for the post!

  7. After ten days, it feels pretty trivial to just continue without counting the days. I'm relieved!

  8. That varied over the years, naturally, sometimes more, sometimes less. A common pattern however, was that it started slowly, like once a week, then twice a week, etc until I was doing it like three times a day. After some time it would get so exhausting I just had to do something about, at which point I managed to gather enough power to resist the temptation for a week. I repeated this cycle over and over again, more or less.

One important note here is that it's not the masturbation in itself that is exhausting, it is the porn that hijacks your brain that is.

Much respect man. It'd be great to grab a beer with you one day.

In regards to this I'd say if you love your wife and have a good connection with her then this is already good enough reason for why you should just push porn aside, she deserves better. Otherwise as u know, porn wrecks relationships, bit by bit.

    Godspeed

  10. great , very great , for leaving porn and for encouraging others ,im also on day 758 and today is also my birthday , ive turned 23. porn is filth that poisons every aspect of our life.

  11. Thanks for your comment. Yes, I agree, I'm going to continue to push porn aside. My point here was that porn is like a permanent magnet: Whatever you do, there will always be that magnet out there, trying to pull you in. It doesn't matter how much or how long you've been away from it, the attraction force is still there, waiting for you to get week and give in... your job, for the rest of your life, is to be aware of this and never forget how much harm it will cause you, if you let that magnet pull you in. You must never drop your guard.

Oh, by the way. Since I started this thread, I have continued just like usual but without counting days. It feels just like normal, so apparently I don't have to update my counter to stay on track :)

  12. I'm very happy for you and it's a really good thing that you have made that decision to quit porn already. My porn habits just got worse, year after year. If I had stopped when I was 21, it would have been so much better than stopping at 35! Nevertheless, I tend to see the good in the whole. The good thing is, it's an easy matter for me to remind myself why I don't want to go back :D

    Happy Birthday! :emoji_birthday:

Yeah, I don't count days, I just know which month I stopped and even that gets blurred after about two years pass. For me it's not a life-time magnet thing tho like I actually had many bad days in the last two months and not once thought about porn. More like having sex if anything. So maybe you can break free of that after some time as well, depends on the magnitude of addiction probably and other thoughts you have/outlook, etc. But anyhow keep your guard up and just remember how sickening that world is.
