Professionals will tell you that you need to think a lot to overcome a problem. A few things you can ask yourself to get you thinking after a setback are:

    1. Be honest with yourself, explain to yourself why you had the setback. What were the conditions which led to it?

    I had a setback because...

    2. What have you learned from the experience?

    I have learnt that...

    3. What might you try to do differently in the future?

    I would try...

    4. What other situations might create further setbacks?

Other situations which might trigger a setback are...

    5. What immediate thing could you do to avoid the situation if it happened now?

The immediate thing I could do to avoid the situation in the future is...(avoidance techniques like STOP and urge surfing are very effective strategies, but they are skills that need to be learned really well, so you'd want to immerse yourself in the learning process and try to make them second nature).

It's not always easy to act effectively in the spur of the moment, let alone remember what we have to do, and especially when we haven't put in the hours and effort to train ourselves to respond effectively. The fact that you're asking the question shows you're open to learning and for me, that's an important state of mind to have.

    Good luck! :)

Thank you for saying that. Work hard my friend. Recovery isn't easy. Not for any of us, and it can be really hard when you don't really know what you're dealing with. We can learn a lot from our failures, if we can stay open to the lessons of those failures.

Not an easy task, but essential nonetheless.

I'm trying to learn every waking moment!

Thank you for the very valuable assistance :)

  6. My main advise on that would be to have a rethink about why you’re doing this and where you want to get to. If you want to change your life badly enough no dopamine rush will be worth halting your progress.

No relapse happens without a reason.
Ask yourself long and hard why that happened?, What led to your relapse?
Once you find your most honest answers to yourself, look for practical solutions
