Auto-lock threads after a year?

Discussion in 'Off-topic Discussion' started by Fallacious D, Sep 2, 2020.

  1. To encourage people to contribute original content to the forum.

Just a thought for the @Moderation Team

  2. If you do have to tag an account, you're better off picking a mod over an announcement account which is, as they say, rarely used.

Also, no. I have seen many individuals revive some brilliant threads which were previously overlooked, albeit on rare occasions. Even rarer is when the OP is still on nofap and finds the new comments revitalizing or an opportunity to present his/her updates on whatever the thread is about.

The content doesn't need to be original because the members aren't. Each member deserves personal responses to their thread, and in any case- doing so has no impact on their originality.

EDIT: if anything, this should apply to the Off Topic Section alone.

From what I understand they keep them open so that instead of creating the same thread asking the same question (which still happens occasionally), they can just search to see if it exists and then they can just reply to that instead.

Otherwise that would take up so much data on their servers right?

  4. It doesn't just happen occasionally, I see the same questions reposted every day. The issue I have is that not enough people go back and read the old threads.

I hope this idea does not happen. I much prefer resurecting an old thread where possible. There are loads of threads here full of wisdom from users who have long since gone and no one reads them anymore. It's great when they are brought to light again. So I disagree with you @FellatiousD, sorry, and I hope we can and do resurect age old threads—there's gold in them there hills.

  6. What's the need for it tho?
    Also whatever this is!

  7. Why do you want to see other people do stuff that you want? Maybe they don't wanna see old threads? lol

  8. Because they keep asking the same questions every day when their questions are already answered numerous times.

  9. Stuff that isn't the same loop of 6 or 7 different types of post.
    1. "Is this a relapse"
    2. "transwoman porn - am I gay"
    3. "How do I stop jerking off"
    4. "Do fetishes go away"
    5. "Do I regain X/Y/Z that I had before becoming addicted?"
    6. "Does PMO harm you in X/Y/Z way"
    7. "I want to relapse, convince me not to"

  10. You always have the choice to not read such threads. That would be a sensible solution with least side effects.

On the other hand what you are asking is gonna be detrimental to new users in the long run.
    • People who have just relapsed are not always in a calm state of mind to think straight and read FAQ, so they just have mild panic and post their queries.
    • Almost all of the users here are undergoing various degrees of stress, depression etc. And you aren't thinking about it.
    Now just think it over...
When people ask same old questions... Old User 1 answers them (or ignores it if he doesn't have the time)... Old User 2 whines about it and cringes over it and neither helps them, nor glosses over it and move on.

Which approach is a smart one. I leave it for you to decide yourself.

Also I think you need to take a break and discipline yourself to not lurk too much over the forums. Cuz the problem you have with such content stems from too much browsing over everything in here. (That is just my personal opinion, and stems from experience, there was a time when I was bitter at this place because of some sick individuals, and eventually I realised that the only sick person was my own stubbornness in not facing reality of my situation and getting into unnecessary drama.)

You need to use this place as a recovery tool. Not an online magazine that has any obligations to entertain you with new novel content day after day.

(Sorry if I sound harsh on you, I don't mean any harm.)

  12. I can use the site however I want. But people are making it harder for themselves by not trying to find useful information which is never more than a few screens away. It would be more optimal for everyone if people searched for answers to their questions before asking them.

No offense, but this is a bad idea imo. Yes it would get rid of some trash but it would also get rid of some good content that has bee overlooked. Also, I'm assuming you mean locking threads 1 year after the last post, not the op. Otherwise its a terrible idea.

  14. Yeah maybe. I guess my main complain is with the community. There's a few helpful people, a lot of idiots and the rest is just pseudoscience and incel venting. Which results in a pretty low average thread quality. And then for some reason I force myself to scroll through the sewer-tier threads with the hope of eventually running into a good thread. It's whatever.
