Who needs better janitors--an elementary school, or a chemical plant? I'll leave it up to business owners to decide what they need. You have a real knack for making bold claims about what other people need--you know what kind of janitors businesses need, you know what kinds of guns people need for defense (if any) ... but should I be surprised? Totalitarians always know better than everyone else.

Right. Because we all know one of the best ways to become successful is to poison your customers. Omg, without regulation, we'd just start putting arsenic in Flintstone's vitamins, we're so scientifically ignorant. Thank god for politicians!

If they refuse to make any effort to improve their skills, then yeah, pretty much. Or, just maybe, they could do the things most low-skilled people (and young college students) do to cope with living costs--get roommates, stop drinking, take the bus, eat ramen, don't have kids, and in the process--gasp--work to develop better skills. This isn't rocket science. It isn't the responsibility of everyone else to support a woman because she chose to spend $80,000 getting a Masters Degree in Gender Studies and now she can't find a job, or to put a roof over the head of an entitled 20-something who thinks he should get his major needs met just by virtue of existing. Welcome to the real world where adults learn to support themselves. Of course, if they'd rather have their dignity taken away and be nurtured and coddled by government handouts all their lives, there's a party here that's very happy to enslave them to that poverty and victim mentality.

You just don't get it. Those nations are able to get the drugs for lower prices because Americans pay so much more for them. It's like pharmaceutical welfare, which I think you'd be all in favor of, since you seem to support spreading the wealth around.

Our prices are also the primary reason the US is the #1 innovator in pharmaceuticals. We create more medicines and better medicines than any nation on earth. If European nations paid more, there would be more innovation on a global scale. You see a high price for a drug and instantly think it's a bad thing, just like how you see a gun and instantly think it's something only used for murder. Expand your perspective a bit.

Yes, you're correct, but unironically. Remember that the tobacco industry successfully muddied the waters for decades regarding lung cancer. And even now, when there's no doubt that cigarettes are lethal, when the cig salesmen are forced to put vomit-inducing pictures of necrotic lungs on the packets they still continue to sell the poison! Yes, they're quite literally successful because they're poisoning their customers.

A businessman's goal is to make money. Somebody dying as a side effect is not of interest to him unless it is forced to be by outside factors like worsening reputation or gov regulation.

Okay. Then I disagree. See - certain jobs by their nature are not dependent on skill (that's what I meant by saying that nobody needs good janitors). But nonetheless those jobs need to be done! Which means that at any point in time you'd have many people working them. And it doesn't seem to me to be fair for those people (who contribute to society, don't forget!) to be in poverty. So I'm glad that most politicians and economists take my side on this and support the minimum wage idea.

What? No, they're able to get them cheaper because their governments tell Pfizer and Gsk and Novartis that they can either drop the price or get the fuck out of the country.

Well if that were true that'd be enough for me to change my view because I consider finding cures for diseases probably the most important thing in the world to do. But I'm afraid that most of the extra margin goes into the pockets of the shareholders via dividends and not into R&D.

Addressing the OP mentioning "Nazis", I saw a great meme about that recently.

My grandparents fought in WW2 against actual Nazis who were literally killing and imprisoning human beings by reason of insanity. Now we have politicians and immature millennials calling any opinion they disagree with as fascist. That completely lacks respect the true evils of Nazis, and for the true sacrifices of those that fought and were victorious against them.

 

Thanks for the reply. I’m actually trying to understand and learn about the socdems point of view. I admit, I’ve never been much for politics so it’s taking some time to catch up, which is why I was asking for clarification and admitting that I do not understand their position.

Take it from a Canadian. The government takes hundreds of dollars from my paychecks for Healthcare I'll never receive. Claiming insulin costs the user $32 is a bit of a stretch.

You better pray your ailments are on the approved list too. Not everything is covered. Good luck paying for specialized care after the government has stolen your money and refuses to pay out.

I see a story on the news at least once a month. It's always the same, just with different players. Either a woman or child has contracted some ailment. Treatment is available in the US that may save their life. The CAN government refuses to pay out. They have to beg for donations to pay for the trip and treatment.

I have tried to understand the fascination with our Healthcare system. The best I can come up with is that they literally think it is free. It is free, if you do not pay taxes. So those who refuse to work or have non-taxable income (like pimps and drug dealers) get free Healthcare. The rest of us who work legitimate jobs have the money siphoned from our paychecks before we even see a dime.

I'd move to America in a minute. A free state anyway. I have looked into it a bit, but the pathway isn't too clear.

 

Healthcare is actually a provincial affair, so Trudeau gets off the hook for that one.

The only thing he has done is legalize weed, and that has been an unmitigated disaster. The government dispensaries are losing millions selling dominion dope. The rest of the time has been spent on vacations, socks and crying.
