Caffeine and PMO

I took my first sip of coffee in Middle School. In high school, tea was my main gig. As a college student, I can't imagine life without caffeine. I'm not the higher end of consumers by any means, but I can't think of a week where I've gone without it.

I've read a couple times on these forums that dropping caffeine/coffee can help with maintaining streaks. Has anyone else had experience with this?

Currently two weeks caffeine free, I feel much better. I don't know about nofap specifically, but I wake up feeling refreshed every day, and my energy is constant until I become sleepy in the evening. Caffeine does not give you an energy boost if you look at the average over the whole day. After all, how can it? It contains no calories.

What is it like for the first few days? I think tapering off is a good investment in the long term, its time and money saved.

You'll feel like death for the first few days. Prepare to be useless for that time. If you have the self control to taper I think you should do that. For me, it was too tempting to get a full cup of coffee instead of the half cup I told myself I would get.

I've recently done exactly this. Caffiene withdrawl is absolutely awful. It's something you can get through, but expect to be fine first day, eh second day, 3rd day you will feel like someone's been kicking you in the head. 4th day is usually stay in bed for me, 5th it starts to get a bit better, by 7th it's gone.

It will help, just relapsed but I'm going to go off of caffeine during this next reboot attempt

  7. I haven’t had any negative effect from caffeine on my reboot. I know everyone’s different and caffeine can effect people differently. I drink one cup a day.

I’d be interested to know how drinking caffeine can lead to urges, relapse and resets, if that’s what it does. I have no idea.

In my experience I havent had issues with caffeine. I do drink one cup of coffee almost everyday though. Ive heard people say that caffeine can also be an addiction. If it is then I probably have it and it is something I would like to address in the future. Right now im working on No PMO and it's working well. I will say that I tried "cleasing" from caffeine by not drinking it for close to a week. It wasnt life changing but I did feel better overall. For me, coffee is about the taste and it's one of my daily pleasures. I have learned to manage it better though. I used to have it first thing in the morning but now I can go well into the afternoon and feel fine. It's more about the taste than the energy.

I've found that it helps subdue desire for first couple of weeks - however this last time around day 34 or so of no caffeine/PMO I got so depressed that I relapsed and decided to go caffeine again. That last a couple of weeks until I relapsed this evening. For me the two are related addictions.

I've found a tapering approach reasonably easy. I cut out coffee first and then am on black tea, then green tea. If you buy coffee somewhere like Starbucks its easiest, just spend 2 days on a given size of coffee, then drop down a size, and so forth, until you're off coffee. Then the same with black tea, and so forth until you hit your desired caffeine level.

I don't see going caffeine-free as a way to help stay porn free necessarily, but I think porn and caffeine are both "artificial" ways to mess with your energy and engagement levels and so its worth removing both and then getting your life together in a way where you're not dependent/reliant on either of these. And then from there, decide if you even feel compelled to go toward either of em.

Trying to quit cold turkey is the worse. Do gradual as I mentioned in my prior post.

Most people don't have the discipline to taper like that, or they wouldn't be here. :)

  14. Switch to decaf. Your brain won't make the difference. After a month you can start to cut it down.

I have been thinking of switching to decaf or at least the lower caffeine brands or something as well.

  16. Just over a month of caffeine. It does help with sleeping and reduced sense of anxiety. Also a bit of a clearer mind too.

I have had some bad experiences with drinking too much coffee or espresso and PMO. If I get too lit up, I find my defenses are down and my obsession is up. I can get really obsessed and if I have to much caffeine, I can’t sleep. Staying up late for me is a recipe for a slip.

I try to use caffeine wisely. I like coffee so I make half caff in the morning. It helps me to wake up but not get too crazy. I make sure I don’t have coffee too late. When I do I regret it!

@dignifiedrose, great awareness and way to stay on top of what triggers you. The more aware we are, the better shot we have at success. Keep us in the loop! You are doing great!

  18. Have been a heavy user for decades. Stopped consuming it a month ago. It's totally worth it. I sleep better, I feel less stress and anxiety. My heart is calm. I fall asleep easily. I don't know if it helped in my NoFap journey though.
It was really difficult to get rid of it. I had terrible headaches, cravings and I was sleeping 10h a day. After two weeks it gets better. I will never touch a coffee again and I will almost never drink a tea again.

  19. Looking back a month ago myself it seems insane now to go back to drinking a cup of stress hormones being away from it really is an eye opener.

I have to ask then guys, how in the world do you get woke up and through the day? I tried skipping coffee yesterday I almost could have fallen asleep all day at work.

i work 10 hour days and have to get up at 3am for work also.

If you like the taste of coffee, has anyone tried just switching to decaf? See if I could trick my brain and body into thinking I am still drinking coffee.
