Can anyone suggest a bunch great rock bands and rock songs between 1950 to 2010?

e.g. Rock, Psychedelic, Orchestral Rock, Hard Rock, Soft Rock, Punk Rock, etc.

Feel free just to leave a list of links or even talk about them :)

The Who (1964 - ?)

Didn't invent rock, but most of the cliches started here. Marshall stacks? Power Chords? Blowing things up onstage and smashing their instruments at the end of gigs? Wrecking hotel rooms? The Who did it all years before, and better.
Proper working class too, not posh boys pretending like the Rolling Stones :p

Their albums are great - again, highly influential with their 'rock opera' concept albums - but I had to post a live take, really. Here is 'Won't Get Fooled Again' from 1978, Keith Moon's last gig but still on top form, and displaying their incredible live energy and stage antics (as well as a solid performance):

Albums

WIRE - 154
The Libertines - The Libertines
Weezer - Weezer (Blue Album) (They have multiple albums that are self-titled only distinguishable between colour of album cover)
The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico
The Strokes - Is This It

Check out Seventh Wonder. Amazing singer and very bright and fun soundscapes

Radiohead. If you just want a great rock album, try The Bends from 1995. Their later more experimental stuff is amazing too.

The White Album by the Beatles. This one is not just rock. It’s a bit of everything.

Check out the album Elephant by The White Stripes. I typically only listen to metal, but the White Stripes are an exception. :D

I'm a middle aged musician, and I always fight a battle in my mind over who is the best.

Sometimes I want to give it to The Police because they combined Sting's amazing songwriting,

with Andy's genius guitarwork and Stewart's powerful and/or syncopated drumming.

But then I think about Van Halen, especially in the Van Hagar years.

I usually can put Ed & Al as two of the best rock musicians in the rock era.

But I can't skimp on praise for Mike and Sam too, they were firing on all cylinders in those years.

If I don't mention Yes, I feel like a blunderbus, because they are the band that should go down

as most epic or virutosic.

Then I'm like, wait, I didn't mention Queen, they go in the top 5 at WORST.

I am a Who fan, but too many of their B sides, with the exception of It's Hard,

were filler-esque.

The Beatles and Stones were foundational to rock, I agree, but I can't sit down and

pick one of their albums and listen to it, beginning to end.

The Beatles had a lot of good songs, but coming up in the 1980s era of MTV

didn't set them on the same level as 1980s bands, they sounded archaic.

The Stones have a massive fanbase as legacy artists, but too many songs

just sounds like guys trying to drive through a song that

lacked contour, or was overly simplistic.

That brings me back to Aerosmith, and I've bought 3-4 of their albums

and I have to say, I like ALL of their B-sides and hits,

so they are stronger than the Beatles and Stones for me.
