The church world is always seeking new members, so they tell their current members to get busy and make new members through marriage and procreation. Something that has been noted, however, is that most of what we see as modern Churchianity today has actually hidden the teachings of Jesus from their congregations and the world. Things like: "His disciples said, “...it is better not to marry.” He said to them, “All cannot accept this saying... He who is able to accept it, let him accept it.” (Mt 19:10-12) Usually, go unmentioned to the public even as an option, Things the churches ignore and trample over have an endless list. All that said, what does "remaining single for Christ" really mean and how would that solve our loneliness? Well, In the book of Acts, the early disciples begin to live together all for the purpose of learning to love each other and being accountable (something that many seek on this website .) The state of being lonely, in my opinion, is mainly in our minds since we can easily go out to the streets and interact all we want, but for many, it is a difficult state to escape. The solution to the state is to constantly be pushed out of that deadly comfort zone we call loneliness and abandonment. COULD IT BE?

Throughout the history of Christianity, celibacy was mostly practiced in the context of living in community. Monks only became hermits after many years of cenobitic living (i.e. with other monks), and there were never many of them. It was always seen as a serious and challenging call that requires one to be already be totally grounded in their spiritual practices. I encourage you to look at the history of Christian monasticism, or maybe seek out a contemporary religious community if you want something more embodied. My point is that the path of celibacy is not meant to be done alone. Yes, it's possible but don't just try it on your own. That's foolish.

(Also, as to whether monks would masturbate: of course many would, and of those who are monks today I believe they likely do just a little, and same with celibate priests. This is a question I have always wondered. I actually asked a monk about masturbation once when I was at Taize, and I asked a priest about it later too. I asked what they thought of it and not whether they did it...and they wouldn't have told me whether they did or not even if I did have enough audacity and disrespect to ask. I think some do masturbate but will never admit it. Others may admit it. Maybe some don't masturbate. Whether celibacy includes masturbation is up for debate anyway.)

(If you're wondering what the Taize brother and the priest said to me - the first one did not give his opinion about masturbation and the other said that it was fine in moderation so long as it's not obsessive, destructive or interfering with your life. He said porn is always harmful though, which I of course agree with. Honestly, this is the truth.)

In short, don't be foolish. This is a bit of a rant, though to be fair it seems like you enjoy giving a bit of a rant yourself :)
