I recently came upon the information that China has blocked over 38 and counting animes such as Attack on Titan, Sword Art, and High School of the Dead. I was a little distraught when I heard this because I am a huge anime fan.

I completely understood blocking flaunty animes such as High School of the Dead and Sword Art 2, but not Tokyo Ghoul and AoT. Then, my SO and I did some research and came upon this wiki: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_censorship_in_China

It describes in detail what exactly China blocks, monitors, and firewalls according to the Internet. I, for one, think these censorings are very reasonable. They block porn, gambling, alcohol, and many other detrimental websites. Social media is also censored. Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have been blocked completely since 2009.

I am making this thread to discuss people's opinions upon the matter of censorship of our internet and how people who are ignorant keep saying it is impossible when we have proof right here that it is, in fact, possible!

In order to avoid ridiculous bullshit I would ask that you please read through the wiki before commenting. If you are commenting just to be rude or trolling, your comments will be deleted.

Porn in China, like prostitution and other sex related commerce, is illegal, but increasingly available throughout the country due to "hawkers" who sell them like drugs on the street. It is obvious it is not completely done away with, but it is however majorly suppressed. They are arrested on site.

I would like to touch on the fact that they censor mostly political stuff to keep their population un-informed of worldly matters. I am not touching on this matter and simply discussing the censorship of violent and sexual content. That stuff is left for a different discussion all together.

Technically you can block this nasty stuff or even the internet altogether which is nearly done in North Korea. The problem is in the USA , some European countries , Japan and other countries porn is a legal industry so it follows that you can't block the sites that these legal industries own or they will judge you.

Exactly, but seeing a country as big as China can make such things illegal, then I do believe it shouldn't be too hard for us. It just goes to show how corrupt many countries are. Most people believe this shit is normal because our country tells us so.

Although I agree with you, I would like to mention that this thread is meant to discuss only the censorship of sexual and violent content.

It isn't just China. There are a few countries that block porn. In my opinion if something has been shown to cause detrimental effects on society it should be banned. Making porn illegal is way too hard so banning it altogether is a good thing. As far as I know things like social media are not detrimental and YouTube is pretty informative. Just censor the porn and I am in agreement.

I will say however that I am pretty naive about some of the crap that is on the internet.

Well to enlighten you on something horrible coming soon, there is a virtual porn simulator already being developed. It scares me so bad I almost don't want to live in this world anymore :(

It could turn into something like the movie Gamer, if you have ever seen it.

I don't think things should be censored. I believe in the freedom of posting material, even if it is sexual or violent. Although I personally am abstaining from pornography and have a problem with it, many people do not. Many are able to take it or leave and have no addiction to it. Thus, I think porn should be legal and I personally am not fighting porn. I'm fighting my addiction. Most guys never become addicted to porn.

That being said, I have heard the argument that women are abused in porn. I completely support stopping porn in which women are abused. I also highly support the rehabilitation of porn addiction.

This is just my opinion and I'm not always right.

I am glad you have shared your opinion with us my friend. I would like to say that the only thing I have a problem with in your opinion is that you say many people do not have an addiction to porn.

The greater majority of the male population (64% as of August 14th, 2014) in the U.S. view porn at least monthly. Watching porn monthly would be considered addictive behavior. Doing something once a month, every month, is addictive behavior. They have a need to keep coming back.

Porn is like watching a demonic sideshow, with a demon using humans as puppets and pulling the strings so to speak, for their own malevolent ends.

Watching a demonic puppet show even one time is crossing a line for me, addiction or not, that shit is pure evil in every sense of the word. 'Asmodeus' level evil. I want to be good, I want to be a junzi (superior gentleman). Junzi's do not entertain evil thoughts or perform wrong deeds.

Oh yes I have heard of this. I have 2 little girls so imagine how I feel :(. Will they ever be able to find a decent guy to date and have normal sex with? Ugh. I just don't understand why men are being so controlled by this. Guys are now gonna put on fucking goggles and masturbate. Like WTF?! And no one is saying anything. 20 year olds minds are being warped but lets make it 10 times worse.....

I really try to keep my mind in a positive state when thinking about this stuff otherwise I go crazy. When I look at the numbers I really get depressed but I try to think about the positive. For example 40 million people in the usa view porn regularly. That is actually a small number if you think about it. 380 million in the usa, maybe half that are males and then half that are adults. So 40 million out of a possible 95 million. That means that 55 million adult males are not regular viewers of porn.

It helps me sleep at night and it helps me interact with men in society. I have actually started to suffer a lot of social anxiety since all of this came to light for me.

    * my numbers may be completely wrong!

I'm not sure what I believe regarding censorship as a whole. There are many aspects to consider, such as free speech/free will, and censorship could also be interpreted as 'saving people from themselves'.

I will say, though, that pornography should be illegal if only for the reason that the women and men in the business are under a lot of duress and dealt physical and psychological damage due to the nature of the industry. Some people have offered up the idea that pornography which allows violence against women should only be illegal. But I say, we either have the porn industry as is, or none at all. There is not and will never be "ethical porn". The industry is horrifyingly unregulated, so there is no way to enforce an ethical standard. Porn is a business and businesses thrive on making money and selling a successful product. People will always want something more 'shocking' and 'arousing' due to the Coolidge Effect, so an ethical, tame industry which doesn't have the rampant violence and constantly-evolving perversions will not survive. There won't be much of a demand if people lose interest, and porn producers wouldn't find that avenue very appealing. They pretty much make money off of fueling addictions. Porn, as it is, is not ethical, is harmful and poisonous to society, and should be illegal or banned in my eyes. Similarly to China, an 'underground' demand of porn would erupt, albeit differently since the US is a major producer of porn.

Anyway, I think China has its own agenda in regards to politics and censorship, but their evaluation of pornography, violence, social media and other "time-wasters" as detrimental to a society is actually pretty forward-thinking. Sorry for the rambling, just my opinion!

That's the core of the problem who is going to determine what should be considered "time wasters" or "addictive material"? You probably know that just surfing the internet is quite addictive. So censorship is really a double edged weapon and some governments use it for their political agenda.
I agree that pornography should be banned but not social media (although I quit social media altogether about 3 months ago).
Anyway , I would like a porn-free world but it seems like utopia for me.

I as an American citizen agree with certain aspects of freedom of speech but looking back it would have probably had been better for a lot of people if those site were more filtered and watched and even censored from the pubic it is really sad now that porn has been so easy to get our hands on over in the us for anyone at any age most sites only ask if you are 18 and all you have to do is check the yes box some don't even have that mediocre safe guard and can be easily accessed. But where China has a major advantage by not being a democratic type government they can easily pass laws without very much effort unlike the system the us has in place our politicians have to jump through hoop to get absolutely no where. I mean don't get me wrong here I think that blocking AoT is wrong but the fact that they can block a lot of this from coming up is amazing. I do feel ashamed that America has created so much from the porn industry and yet we are more concerned with trying to ban yoga pants then fix a completely degrading part of our society

Believe me that kind of countries where they pass laws as they want is not good.I live in one myself and I hate the country and will get out of it as soon as I finish my college.

I think that both styles have too many flaws in the because over here. When we pass something stupid it takes forever to fix it, if it ever does, but on the opposite side of that I think if you can pass whatever law you want you cut the power away from the people. but back on the topic of this censorship, I feel that the world as a whole needs to take a stand with the internet we gained access all around the world to see new things. We have taken too much advantage of that and when you see more adult rated adds on paces where teenagers go it is really concerning for the future of the next generation. I feel China took a step in the right direction just went way too far with it
